The Soul of the Departure
Seattle — The Alaska Cruise Capital
No port in North America launches more Alaska cruises than Seattle. The city sits at the edge of Puget Sound with the Olympic Mountains to the west and the Cascades to the east — and when you sail north from here, the scenery begins before you even leave the sound. Seattle is not a port you rush through. Pike Place Market, the waterfront, Capitol Hill, and the Space Needle are all within a short distance of the terminals. If you are sailing to Alaska, arriving a day or two early is not just recommended — it is almost obligatory.
Seattle has two cruise terminals three miles apart along Elliott Bay. This is the most important fact in this guide: knowing which terminal your ship uses before you arrive will save you significant stress on embarkation morning. Pier 91 (Smith Cove) handles the bulk of the fleet — Princess, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Celebrity, Carnival, MSC, and Virgin Voyages. Pier 66 (Bell Street) handles Norwegian and Oceania, and is the only terminal within walking distance of downtown Seattle. Pack your bags, do your research, and arrive early enough to spend real time in one of the most beautiful port cities in America.
“Sailing out of Seattle means you start your Alaska cruise the moment you clear the harbor — the mountains, the Sound, the eagles overhead. There is no better send-off in North America.”
🚀 2026 — Record-Breaking Season
2026 is Seattle’s busiest Alaska cruise season in history: 330 ship calls, 2.1 million estimated passengers, and 16 homeport ships. Hotels and parking fill early. Book everything before March if sailing May through August. New additions this season include MSC Poesia (MSC Cruises’ Alaska debut), Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady, and Star Princess headlining Princess’ largest-ever Alaska program.
Know Your Terminal
Two Piers — Three Miles Apart
This is the single most important thing to confirm before your sailing day. The two terminals are not interchangeable — showing up at the wrong pier will cost you significant time. Check your cruise line’s confirmation documents or app to confirm your terminal assignment.

⚠ Wrong Terminal = Missed Ship
Pier 66 and Pier 91 are 3 miles apart by road. On a busy Saturday morning in peak Alaska season, the drive between them can take 20–30 minutes or more. Always confirm your pier assignment in your cruise line booking confirmation, app, or boarding documents before sailing day. Do not rely on memory or assumptions.

Seattle is the best Alaska cruise embarkation port in North America — and it is not particularly close. The city itself is genuinely world-class: the food scene, the waterfront, Pike Place Market, the neighborhoods. Arrive two days early if you can. One day is enough to do the highlights; two days means you actually experience the city. Either way, do not make the mistake of flying in the morning of your sailing. This port rewards the extra night more than almost any other in our guides.
Climate & Packing
Monthly Weather — Seattle, Washington
Seattle’s reputation for rain is both true and overstated. Yes, the city is wet from October through April — but that rain tends to arrive as persistent drizzle rather than downpours, and it rarely stops anyone from doing anything. The real surprise is the summer: July and August are among the driest months of any major American city, with brilliant sunshine and temperatures that rarely exceed 80°F. The Alaska cruise season (April through October) begins in the shoulder-season rain and ends in crisp fall weather — with a glorious summer window in between. Layers are always the right call.
🌸 Spring — Apr to May
Good Cruise Window
Cool, green, and wet.
Temperatures climb from the low 50s to the low 60s. Rain is frequent but light. The city is lush and beautiful, crowds are smaller, and prices are lower than peak summer. Pack a waterproof layer every day — you will use it.
☀️ Summer — Jun to Aug
Best Time to Cruise
Seattle’s glory days.
The driest and warmest months. July and August average fewer than 3 rainy days each. Temperatures stay pleasant in the 70s. Long daylight hours — sunset past 9 PM in June. The downside: peak crowds and peak prices everywhere.
🍂 Early Fall — Sep to Oct
Best Time to Cruise
Underrated and excellent.
September is often Seattle’s best month — summer warmth lingers, crowds thin, and prices drop. October sees the first real rain return. The Alaska sailing season wraps in early October, making September sailings a sweet spot for value and weather.
❄️ Winter — Nov to Mar
No Alaska sailings.
The cruise season ends by early October. Seattle winters are cool, wet, and grey — not severe, but persistent. Snow is rare (less than 4 inches annually) but can cause significant disruption when it arrives. Not relevant for Alaska cruise planning.

What to Pack for Seattle
The Pre-Cruise Packing Reality
☔ Always — Every Month
✓Waterproof jacket or shell — non-negotiable Apr, May, Oct
✓Layers — mornings are always cooler than afternoons
✓Comfortable walking shoes — Seattle hills are real
✓Small daypack for terminal day
☀️ Summer Add-Ons (Jun–Aug)
✓Sunscreen — UV index peaks in July at 6
✓Sunglasses — long evening sun is intense
✓Light layers still needed — evenings cool quickly
✓N95 or respirator if wildfire smoke is forecast
🏔 For Alaska Aboard Ship
✓Heavy fleece or down jacket — Glacier Bay is cold
✓Waterproof pants for shore excursions
✓Warm hat and gloves — even in July on deck
✓Binoculars — wildlife spotting is constant
✓Waterproof bag for camera and electronics ashore
🚫 Leave at Home
×Heavy luggage — Seattle has hills and cobblestones
×Umbrella — Seattleites rarely use them and they fold in the wind
×Formal cruise wear in carry-on — pack in checked bags
ⓘ Wildfire Smoke — August & September
The Pacific Northwest experiences periodic wildfire smoke events from late July through September. Air quality can drop from excellent to unhealthy in a matter of hours. If you or anyone in your group has respiratory conditions, pack an N95 respirator and check airnow.gov in the days before your departure. The smoke does not typically affect sailings, but it can impact your pre-cruise days in the city.
★ VTS Best Time to Sail From Seattle
September is our top recommendation for anyone with flexibility: summer warmth, thinning crowds, lower hotel rates, and Alaska at its most dramatic — the fall colors on the Inside Passage are something you do not expect until you see them. July and August are excellent if budget is not a concern. April and May work well for experienced cruisers who do not mind rain and want to avoid the peak season premium. Avoid October sailings unless you are specifically chasing repositioning deals or can embrace real rain gear.
Getting to the Port
Seattle-Tacoma Airport & Ground Transport
Seattle has one major airport serving cruise passengers. The key transport decision is pier-specific: Pier 66 (Bell Street) is downtown and can be reached by Link Light Rail plus a short walk. Pier 91 (Smith Cove) has no direct public transit connection and requires a vehicle for the final leg. Know your pier before you plan your transport.

★ Seattle Exclusive — Free Service
Port Valet — Fly Home Luggage-Free
Seattle offers something no other cruise port in North America does: Port Valet, a completely free service that transfers your bags directly from your ship cabin to your airline at SEA airport. You disembark, explore Seattle all day, and arrive at the airport with only a carry-on. Your bags are already checked through to your final destination.
Step 1
Enroll online before the cruise or complete the form in your stateroom during the first few days of sailing
Step 2
The night before arrival, boarding passes and luggage tags are delivered to your cabin
Step 3
Place tagged bags outside your cabin door. You disembark with carry-ons only in the first group
Step 4
Spend the day in Seattle luggage-free. Walk to the airport — go straight through security to your gate
Qualifications: Must fly same day you disembark · Flight must depart after 11:00 AM and before 1:30 AM the following day · Participating airlines: Alaska, American, Delta, Horizon, JetBlue, Southwest, United · 7-night+ sailings · Airline baggage fees still apply · Enroll by Day 1 of cruise at 4:00 PM for online enrollment.
$2–$3
Porter tip per bag — have small bills ready at the terminal.
If not using Port Valet, porters handle checked bags at both terminals. Tipping is customary. A family of four with 6 bags should have $12–$18 in small bills. Do not hand bags to anyone who is not in a clearly marked uniform.
⚠ Saturday Morning Surge — Peak Season Warning
Most Alaska sailings depart on Saturday. On peak summer Saturdays, multiple ships (sometimes 4–6) depart within hours of each other from both terminals. Rideshare surge pricing can push fares 50–100% above normal. Traffic around both terminals backs up by mid-morning. If sailing Saturday, pre-book a private transfer or take the Link Light Rail from your downtown hotel to avoid surge pricing entirely.
★ VTS Transport Recommendation
For Pier 66 (Norwegian/Oceania): take the Link Light Rail from SEA to Westlake, then walk 12 minutes along the waterfront to the terminal. You save $40–$60 and arrive relaxed. For Pier 91 (everyone else): pre-book a private car or take the Link to Westlake then rideshare the final leg. Avoid arriving at SEA rideshare pickup on a peak Saturday morning without a pre-arranged vehicle — the queue and surge pricing combination is the single most stressful moment in Seattle cruise travel.
Parking
Official Lots by Terminal — Know Your Pier First
Seattle parking is pier-specific. The official lots are different companies at different locations — and you should not assume you can show up without a reservation on a peak Saturday in July. Both official lots allow online pre-booking, which is strongly recommended from May through September. The math on parking vs. ridesharing for a 7-day cruise usually favors parking for anyone who is not flying in.

Off-Site Alternative
Third-Party Lot — Serves Both Piers
Off-Site · Free Shuttle to Either Pier
Seattle CruisePark
~$28/day · ~$196–$210 for 7 nights
Located just north of Pier 91 — approximately 3-minute shuttle to Pier 91, 8-minute shuttle to Pier 66. Serves both terminals from one lot. Free valet and shuttle included. Family-owned and consistently well-reviewed. Oversize vehicle parking available (limited). RV spaces call for rates — note that RV parking is unavailable for the 2026 season at this location. Cancel up to one week in advance. Book online at seattlecruiseparking.com.
Tip — When Off-Site Makes Sense
Drive-In Day Before
Consider hotel package
If you are staying in downtown Seattle the night before your sailing, several hotels offer package rates that include parking for the cruise duration. You park at the hotel, enjoy the city, walk to the terminal in the morning. See the Hotels section for options — this approach often beats the terminal lot math on longer cruises while giving you a better pre-cruise night.
⚠ RV Travelers — Important 2026 Update
RV parking at the official Pier 91 lot (USP Parking) is available with no height restrictions and accommodates all oversize vehicles. However, Seattle CruisePark has confirmed that RV parking is unavailable for the entire 2026 season. Pier 66 (covered garage) cannot accommodate RVs. If you are arriving in an RV, book directly through USP Parking at seattleportparking.com and call (202) 265-0010 to confirm your dates and vehicle size before committing.
ⓘ Peak Season — Reserve Early
During peak Alaska season (May through August), both official lots can sell out weeks in advance. Saturday is the dominant sailing day for most Alaska itineraries, and multiple ships departing on the same morning means the lots fill fast. If your sailing is between May and August, book your parking at the same time you book your hotel and flights — not as an afterthought the week before.
Practical Parking Tips
Before You Arrive
📅
Book Before You Book Hotels
Official lots sell out. Treat parking reservation as step one after booking your cruise, not an afterthought. Peak Saturdays go first.
🔍
Double-Check Your Pier
Pier 91 and Pier 66 parking are separate companies at separate locations. Booking the wrong lot is a real and stressful mistake on embarkation morning.
💰
Pre-Pay for Discounts
USP Parking at Pier 91 offers a per-day discount when you pre-pay online vs. paying on arrival. The difference adds up on 7–10 night cruises.
🚗
Pier 91 Shuttle Timing
Shuttle runs continuously from the lot to the terminal. Do not rush to arrive at a specific time — the shuttle adjusts to demand throughout the morning.
🏉
Pier 66 Skybridge
The garage at 9 Wall St connects directly to Bell Street Terminal via a covered skybridge. No shuttle needed — park and walk.
👥
Drop-Off Option
Friends or family can use the terminal drop-off lanes at both piers. For Pier 91, a cell-phone waiting lot is available so the driver does not circle.
★ VTS Parking Recommendation
For Pier 91: book USP Parking at seattleportparking.com as soon as your cruise is confirmed. Standard tier is the right call for most travelers — the premium upgrade just moves you closer to the shuttle stop by a hundred feet. For Pier 66: the Republic Parking garage is genuinely convenient with the skybridge connection — no shuttle, no waiting. The extra $6 per day over Pier 91 is worth it for that walk-on simplicity. If you are doing a hotel night before in downtown Seattle, run the hotel parking package math — it often beats the terminal lot while giving you a proper pre-cruise experience.
Embarkation Day
What to Expect — Sailing Day in Seattle
Most Alaska cruises from Seattle depart on Saturday. Your cruise line will assign a boarding window — typically a one-hour slot somewhere between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Respect it: arriving before 10:30 AM means the terminal is not ready and you will wait outside. Arriving during the 11 AM–1 PM peak is when both terminals are at maximum congestion. If you have flexibility, the 1:00–2:00 PM window is noticeably calmer with shorter lines and faster check-in. All-aboard is 90 minutes before departure.

Embarkation Day Timeline
Step by Step — Hotel to Onboard
1
Morning — Before 10:00 AM
Have Breakfast — Explore Seattle a Little More
Terminals do not open until approximately 10:30 AM. Use this time to have a proper breakfast, walk Pike Place Market one last time if staying near Pier 66, or grab coffee from a local roaster. There is nothing to gain from arriving at the terminal before it is ready.
2
~10:00–10:30 AM
Check Out & Move Your Luggage
Check out of your hotel. Most hotels will hold luggage for you if you want to walk around before heading to the terminal — useful if your boarding window is in the afternoon. Pier 66 has luggage storage; Pier 91 does not. At both terminals, luggage storage is available until 3:00 PM.
3
Depart for Terminal During Your Window
Head to Your Pier — Respect Your Boarding Window
Pier 91: allow 15–25 minutes from downtown hotels, 30–45 minutes from SEA airport. Pier 66: allow 5–15 minutes from downtown hotels on foot, 20–30 minutes from SEA. On peak Saturdays, add 20 minutes to all estimates. Your boarding window is the time you should arrive at the terminal, not the time you board the ship.
4
At the Terminal Curb
Drop Bags with Porters
Uniformed porters handle checked bags at the curb. Tag your bags before arriving — cruise line luggage tags should be attached at your hotel. Tip $5–$10 per person (Seattle standard is higher than Norfolk). Keep all documents, medications, valuables, and a full change of clothes in your carry-on — checked bags arrive at your cabin by 5:00–6:00 PM.
5
Inside the Terminal
Security & Check-In
Security screening is similar to TSA — liquids, electronics out if asked. After security, proceed to the cruise line check-in counters. If you completed online check-in, the express line moves significantly faster. Present your boarding pass, passport, and credit card. Receive your cruise card (Sail & Sign or equivalent).
6
11:00 AM Onward
Board & Head to the Lido Deck
Boarding in priority order: suite guests and top-tier loyalty members first, then by boarding window zone. The buffet opens immediately — head there for lunch. Cabins open at approximately 1:30–2:00 PM. Do not stand in the hallway waiting — enjoy the ship.
⚓
~4:00–5:00 PM Saturday
Sailing from Seattle — Get on Deck
Do not miss the sailaway. The departure from Elliott Bay past the Seattle skyline, under the Magnolia Bluff, through the Olympic Mountains backdrop is one of the great cruise departures in the world. Muster drill (mandatory safety briefing) occurs before or just after departure — check your cruise app for the time and location.
⚾ 2026 FIFA World Cup — Critical Seattle Warning
Seattle hosts FIFA World Cup 2026 matches on June 15, June 19, June 24, June 26, July 1, and July 6. On these dates, downtown Seattle will experience extraordinary traffic, hotel scarcity, and road closures around Lumen Field and the waterfront. Rideshare demand and pricing will surge significantly. If your Alaska cruise embarkation falls on any of these dates: pre-book your ground transport at least 2 weeks in advance, allow an additional 60–90 minutes for all ground transit, consider arriving two nights before if hotel availability allows, and confirm your terminal and route before sailing day.
ⓘ Passport Required for Most Alaska Itineraries
Nearly all Alaska cruise itineraries from Seattle include a port call in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. This makes the sailing international — and means a valid passport is required for all passengers, including children. A birth certificate plus government-issued photo ID is not sufficient for Alaska sailings with Canadian port calls. Check your specific itinerary and confirm with your cruise line before sailing day.
Disembarkation Day
Getting Off the Ship in Seattle
Most Alaska roundtrip cruises return to Seattle on Saturday morning. Disembarkation follows U.S. Customs and Border Protection clearance — all passengers must proceed through customs before exiting the terminal, even if you never left the country (the Victoria, BC port call triggers international re-entry). Plan 45–90 minutes from when you leave your cabin to when you are in your transport to the airport or hotel.
Ship Returns to Dock
Typically 6:00–7:00 AM · exact time varies by itinerary and conditions
CBP Clearance
Required for all passengers — the Victoria port call makes this an international return · 30–90 min after docking
Self-Assist Disembarkation
~7:00–8:00 AM · carry all your own bags · first group off the ship · goes through customs with carry-on items only
Assigned Wave Groups
Begin ~8:00–9:00 AM · called by group number or deck in the order printed on your disembarkation materials
Baggage Claim in Terminal
Checked bags organized by tag color in the terminal · porters available for $5–$10 tip
Customs Processing
All passengers pass through CBP inspection before exiting · have passport ready · Global Entry kiosks available at some berths
Port Valet Passengers
Skip baggage claim entirely · disembark with carry-ons only in first group · proceed straight to SEA airport security
Rideshare Pickup
Pier 91: rideshare pickup area well-marked outside terminal · text driver after clearing customs, walk outside before calling · Pier 66: Alaskan Way south end of building
Luggage Storage
Both terminals offer storage until 3:00 PM · also Bounce and Luggage Hero in downtown Seattle for Pier 66 passengers
Terminal Typically Clear By
10:30–11:30 AM · peak season processing can push this to noon
🏆 The Best Disembarkation Setup in Seattle
Enroll in Port Valet on Day 1 of your cruise. Leave bags outside your cabin the last night. Disembark with carry-on only in the first group. Walk or rideshare to SEA. Skip baggage claim. Go straight through security. Spend the morning in Seattle luggage-free before your flight. This is the single best disembarkation experience available at any U.S. cruise port — use it.
★ VTS Embark Day Recommendation
Complete your online check-in the moment it opens — usually 60 days before sailing for most cruise lines. Select a 1:00 PM or later boarding window if available. The 11 AM–12 PM rush at both terminals is real and avoidable. On disembarkation day, Port Valet is non-negotiable if you are flying home — sign up in the first 24 hours aboard. And no matter what: get on deck for the sailaway from Elliott Bay. The Olympic Mountains, the Sound, the skyline fading behind you — you will not regret the 20 minutes standing in the wind.
Flying Home After Your Alaska Cruise
Safe Flight Times From SEA — Seattle-Tacoma Airport
Seattle is the only major U.S. cruise port where your bags can travel to the airport without you, courtesy of Port Valet. That changes the math on return flights significantly. But even with Port Valet, you still need to clear U.S. Customs after the Victoria, BC port call — and that process takes time you cannot control. The safe windows below account for real disembarkation timing, not optimistic estimates.

Safe Flight Windows From SEA
What Time Should You Book?
✓ Stress-Free
2:00 PM+
All passengers
The no-stress window for everyone. Gives you time to clear customs at a relaxed pace, wait for bags if not using Port Valet, and still have a comfortable buffer at the airport. Spend the morning exploring Seattle luggage-free with Port Valet.
✓ Safe
1:00 PM+
Port Valet + TSA PreCheck
Reliable if you are using Port Valet and have TSA PreCheck. You skip baggage claim, go straight to security, and have a reasonable buffer. Still requires CBP clearance which you cannot control. Recommended for experienced cruisers comfortable with Port Valet.
⚠ Use Caution
12:00 PM
Port Valet + PreCheck only
Port Valet requires a 12:00 PM minimum flight time — this is the absolute floor. Only viable with Port Valet, TSA PreCheck, and self-assist disembarkation. One slow CBP clearance or delayed docking removes your entire buffer. Not recommended unless you have done this before.
✕ Do Not Book
Before 12:00 PM
Anyone
Any flight before 12:00 PM from SEA on disembarkation day is not advisable. CBP clearance for international returns can consume the entire morning window. The Port Valet service does not even qualify for flights before noon. Do not book these flights.
ⓘ Saturday Morning at SEA — Expect Crowds
Most Alaska cruises return on Saturday morning. Multiple ships disembarking simultaneously means thousands of passengers converging on SEA within a 3–4 hour window. Rideshare surge pricing from the terminal areas is predictable and significant. TSA lines at SEA peak between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM on these Saturdays. If you have TSA PreCheck, use it. If you do not, budget an extra 30–45 minutes for security. Pre-booking a private car or taking the Link Light Rail from downtown after some Port Valet-enabled sightseeing avoids the surge entirely.
🏆 The Best Possible Seattle Disembarkation Day
Enroll in Port Valet on Day 1. Book a 2:00 PM or later flight from SEA. Disembark with carry-on only in the first group. Clear customs. Walk to Pike Place Market or the waterfront for 2–3 hours luggage-free. Take the Link Light Rail from Westlake Station to SEA ($3.00, 38 min). Skip check-in. Walk straight to security. Done. This is one of the best post-cruise day experiences available at any U.S. port.
★ VTS Flying Home Recommendation
Book a 2:00 PM or later flight, sign up for Port Valet on Day 1, and use the morning in Seattle. The combination of Port Valet plus a couple of extra hours in one of America's great cities is a genuinely wonderful way to end an Alaska cruise. Passengers who book 10:00 AM flights to save one hotel night routinely pay for it in stress. The math does not work. A 2:00 PM flight home is the right call every time.
Where to Stay
Hotels Near Seattle Cruise Terminals
Hotel strategy in Seattle is entirely pier-dependent. Pier 66 passengers can walk to the terminal from most downtown and Belltown hotels — a genuine advantage that changes embarkation morning entirely. Pier 91 passengers need a 10–15 minute rideshare from downtown regardless of which hotel they choose, making location relative to attractions more important than proximity to the pier. All hotels below are suitable for both piers unless noted.
★ VTS Pick — Pier 66
Pier 66 Walk
Waterfront · Iconic
The Edgewater Hotel
Pier 67, 2411 Alaskan Way
$350–$500 /night
🚶 5–8 min walk to Pier 66 · 15 min rideshare to Pier 91
Seattle’s only over-water hotel — built on pilings above Elliott Bay. Pacific Northwest lodge aesthetic, stunning Olympic Mountain views, and a location that puts you steps from the Bell Street terminal. Best for Pier 66 passengers who want the full Seattle waterfront experience. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones once stayed here — rooms still have fishing poles in each one.

🚶 0.5 mi to Pier 66 · 10 min rideshare to Pier 91

Reliable Mid-Range
Seattle Marriott Waterfront
2100 Alaskan Way · Waterfront
$220–$320 /night
🚶 1 mi to Pier 66 · 10 min rideshare to Pier 91
Park & Cruise packages available for 2025–2026 season. Waterfront location on Alaskan Way makes it easy to reach both terminals. Consistent quality and reliable service. Best bet for solo travelers or couples who want waterfront views without Edgewater or Four Seasons prices.
Pier 66 Walk
Budget · Best Location Value
Belltown Inn
2301 3rd Ave. · Belltown
$150–$200 /night
🚶 20-min walk to Pier 66 · 15 min rideshare to Pier 91
Best value in walkable distance of the waterfront. Belltown neighborhood has excellent restaurants within a 2-block radius. Basic rooms but a genuinely excellent location for the price. For Pier 66 passengers this is the smart budget play — walking to Bell Street on embarkation morning is a pleasure.
★ VTS Hotel Recommendation
For Pier 66 passengers, The Edgewater is the dream — stepping off the water directly onto the waterfront to board your ship is a uniquely Seattle experience. For Pier 91 passengers, Homewood Suites wins on value and proximity; the Four Seasons wins if budget is not the constraint. Regardless of your pier, stay downtown — not near the airport. The extra 15 minutes to Pier 91 is worth it for one night in a city this good.
One Day Well Spent
Pre-Cruise Seattle — What to Do
Seattle rewards 48 hours before a cruise far more than most embarkation cities. These are the experiences worth building your pre-cruise itinerary around — chosen for proximity to the waterfront and the fact that they are genuinely exceptional rather than obligatory tourist stops.
🌴
Pike Place Market
Market · Free to walk
America’s oldest continuously operating farmers market. Go before 9 AM to see the fish auction at its best and avoid the afternoon crowds. Walk to the original Starbucks, grab smoked salmon to take onboard, and spend an hour in the lower market levels most tourists miss entirely. Steps from Pier 66.
✓ Free entry · Budget for purchases
📻
Chihuly Garden and Glass
Museum · Seattle Center
The most visually spectacular museum in the Pacific Northwest. Dale Chihuly’s massive glass sculptures in a purpose-built garden adjacent to the Space Needle. Buy tickets online to skip lines. Allow 90 minutes. The glasshouse alone — a 40-foot ceiling covered in orange and amber blown glass — is worth the admission. 10-min rideshare from Pier 66.
~$32/adult · Book online · Seattle Center
🌵
Space Needle
Observation Deck · Iconic
Yes, it is touristy. It is also genuinely stunning on a clear day: the full Olympic Mountains, Mount Rainier, Elliott Bay, and the city below. The glass floor on the observation deck is not for the faint of heart. Buy the Space Needle + Chihuly combo ticket for the best value. Open until late — sunset views are exceptional.
~$37/adult · Combo with Chihuly recommended
🖼️
Seattle Art Museum
World-Class Museum · Downtown
One of the top art museums in the American West. Strong Northwest Coast Indigenous art collection — deeply relevant before sailing Alaska. The Olympic Sculpture Park on the waterfront is free and a beautiful 30-minute walk from either direction along Alaskan Way. Great for the afternoon before a sailing day dinner.
~$30/adult · Olympic Sculpture Park free
🍽
Pike Place Dining — Before You Sail
Food · Pacific Northwest Seafood
The night before your cruise, eat at the water. Le Pichet (French bistro, 1918 1st Ave) or Etta’s Seafood (Tom Douglas, Elliott Bay views) for a memorable pre-cruise dinner. Or sit at the Pike Place Chowder counter for the best clam chowder in the city in a bread bowl for $12. Simple, perfect.
$$ · All within 10 min walk of Pier 66
🌻
Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP)
Music & Pop Culture Museum
Frank Gehry-designed building with rotating exhibits on music, science fiction, film, and pop culture. Jimi Hendrix collection is exceptional — Seattle native. Good for a 2-hour afternoon when the weather turns — which it will, at least once. Next door to the Space Needle and Chihuly.

2026 Event Calendar
Seattle — Know Before You Go
2026 is an extraordinary year for Seattle. The city is simultaneously hosting its busiest-ever Alaska cruise season and six FIFA World Cup matches. The overlap creates real logistics challenges for cruise passengers whose embarkation dates coincide with match days. Know the dates below before you finalize your travel plans.
JUN
15 19 24 26
FIFA World Cup 2026 — Seattle Match Days (June)
Lumen Field hosts FIFA World Cup matches on June 15, 19, 24, and 26. Downtown Seattle will experience extreme traffic, road closures around the stadium and waterfront, and surge pricing on all rideshare services. Hotel inventory at these dates will be at peak or sold out. If your Alaska cruise embarkation falls on any of these dates, pre-book all ground transport at minimum 2 weeks in advance and add 60–90 minutes to all terminal arrival estimates. Arrive in Seattle two nights early if possible.
Critical Impact
JUL
1 6
FIFA World Cup 2026 — Seattle Match Days (July)
Two additional World Cup matches on July 1 and July 6. Peak Alaska cruise season plus World Cup traffic creates the most congested environment in Seattle’s cruise history. Both Pier 91 and Pier 66 access roads can be impacted. Pre-book private transport, allow maximum time buffers, and confirm your route the day before sailing.

Alaska Cruise Season Opens — April 2026
The 2026 Alaska season kicks off in April with 330 ship calls and 2.1 million passengers expected through October. April sailings offer the lowest hotel rates and smallest terminal crowds but the most rain. Book early — parking lots and hotels fill months before peak summer.
Season Start
JUL

Fourth of July — Elliott Bay Fireworks
Seattle’s Independence Day fireworks over Elliott Bay are spectacular from the waterfront — and steps from Pier 66. If your cruise departs July 5th, the evening of July 4th on the waterfront is one of the great pre-cruise experiences available anywhere. Waterfront very crowded — book dinner reservation in advance.
Worth Planning For
AUG
∞
Seafair — Blue Angels & Hydroplane Races
Seattle’s biggest summer festival runs through August with the Blue Angels air show over Lake Washington and hydroplane races. Not directly at the terminals, but draws large crowds citywide. Hotel rates spike during Seafair weekend. Check dates at seafair.com when planning August sailings.
Moderate Impact

Alaska Cruise Season Wind-Down — September Sweet Spot
September is VTS’s recommended month — summer warmth, thinning crowds, hotel rates 20–30% below August, and Alaska foliage beginning to turn on the Inside Passage. No major Seattle events compete with cruise traffic. The ideal combination of weather, value, and experience.

Common Questions
Seattle Cruise Port — FAQ
It depends entirely on your cruise line and specific sailing. As of 2026: Norwegian Cruise Line and Oceania use Pier 66 (Bell Street, downtown). Princess, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Celebrity, Carnival, MSC, and Virgin Voyages use Pier 91 (Smith Cove). However, some ships alternate — always confirm your specific terminal in your booking confirmation documents before arriving. Do not rely on the cruise line name alone.
Yes, for virtually all Alaska itineraries from Seattle. Nearly every Alaska cruise includes a port call in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, making it an international sailing. A valid passport is required for all passengers, including children. A birth certificate plus government-issued photo ID is NOT sufficient for sailings with Canadian port calls. Confirm your specific itinerary with your cruise line before sailing day.
Port Valet is a free service offered by the Port of Seattle that transfers your checked bags directly from your ship cabin to your airline at SEA airport. You disembark with carry-ons only, skip baggage claim, and go straight through security. To enroll: sign up online before your cruise (by 4:00 PM on Day 1) or complete the enrollment form in your stateroom during the first 24 hours. Your flight must depart after 12:00 PM on disembarkation day. Participating airlines: Alaska, American, Delta (domestic only), Horizon, JetBlue, Southwest, United. Airline baggage fees still apply.
Pier 91 is approximately 17 miles from SEA — about 30–45 minutes by car in normal traffic. Pier 66 is approximately 15 miles — about 20–35 minutes. Both can take significantly longer on peak Saturday mornings when multiple ships depart simultaneously. Rideshare costs $40–$65 depending on surge pricing. The Link Light Rail runs from SEA to Westlake Station for $3.00 in 38 minutes — from Westlake you can walk 12–15 minutes to Pier 66 or take a short rideshare to Pier 91.
Pier 91 official parking (USP Parking) starts at $27/day or approximately $187 for a 7-night cruise. Pre-book at seattleportparking.com. Pier 66 official parking (Republic Parking) is $33/day in a covered garage with a skybridge to the terminal. Pre-book at republicparking.com. Both lots sell out during peak Alaska season — reserve at the same time you book your cruise.
Terminals open at approximately 10:30 AM. Your cruise line will assign a Terminal Arrival time or boarding window in your online check-in — honor it. Boarding windows typically run from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Do not arrive before 10:30 AM — you will wait outside with your luggage. The 11 AM–12 PM window is the most congested. If you have flexibility, selecting a 1:00–2:00 PM window results in shorter lines and faster check-in.
Port Valet requires a minimum 12:00 PM departure — this is the absolute floor for anyone using the service. Without Port Valet, book no earlier than 1:00 PM with TSA PreCheck, or 2:00 PM for everyone else. CBP customs clearance after the Victoria, BC port call is mandatory and time-variable — it cannot be rushed. Saturday morning surge pricing and airport crowds add additional time. VTS recommends 2:00 PM or later for a stress-free return flight.
Absolutely — and more emphatically than almost any other port in our guides. Seattle is a world-class city with Pike Place Market, the waterfront, Chihuly Garden and Glass, the Space Needle, exceptional food and coffee, and neighborhoods worth exploring. Two days before is better than one. One day is far better than flying in same-day. For summer sailings especially, you also protect yourself against flight delays that could cause you to miss your ship entirely.
For Pier 66: yes, effectively. Take Link from SEA to Westlake Station ($3.00, 38 min) then walk 12–15 minutes downhill to the Bell Street terminal. This works well for travelers with manageable luggage. For Pier 91: no direct service. Take Link to Westlake then rideshare the remaining 3 miles (~$18–$25, 15 min). Not ideal for families or passengers with multiple large bags, but it does significantly reduce surge pricing exposure on peak Saturdays.
It depends on your pier and budget. For Pier 66 (Norwegian/Oceania): The Edgewater is the iconic choice — 5–8 minute walk to the terminal. For Pier 91 (everyone else): Homewood Suites Downtown is the best value with free breakfast and suite space for luggage, about 2 miles from the terminal. For a splurge at either pier: Four Seasons Seattle on the waterfront. All downtown Seattle hotels require a rideshare to Pier 91 regardless of how close they are to Pier 66.
