America’s Finest City
San Diego — The West Coast’s Most Liveable Cruise Port

San Diego is one of the most enjoyable cruise ports in the United States to pass through — not merely as a transit point but as a destination worth several days in its own right. The terminals sit on the Embarcadero, a two-mile stretch of downtown waterfront, with the USS Midway Museum steps away, the Gaslamp Quarter within walking distance, Balboa Park and the world-famous San Diego Zoo a short ride north, and Coronado accessible by a 15-minute ferry. The airport is 2.5 miles from the pier — arguably the closest major commercial airport to a US cruise terminal — and the Amtrak station is a two-block walk. Logistics here are as good as they get in American cruising.

The cruise season runs September through May. San Diego is the “Gateway to the Mexican Riviera” — most sailings head south to Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, Ixtapa, and Manzanillo on 3–11 day itineraries. Panama Canal repositioning sailings typically depart in early April and early November. Hawaii and Tahiti voyages are offered seasonally, and repositioning sailings connect San Diego to Alaska in spring and return in autumn. Holland America Line is the port’s longest-tenured homeport partner.

“San Diego does not just launch a cruise — it rewards the decision to arrive early. The Embarcadero in the morning, the USS Midway, Balboa Park, a fish taco at the waterfront. You earn the voyage before the gangway opens.”
★ 2025–2026 Season · 107 Voyages · ~390,000 Passengers
The 2025–2026 cruise season at Port of San Diego comprises 107 voyages with approximately 389,000 passengers expected. Holland America Line opened the season in September 2025 as the port’s primary homeport partner. Royal Caribbean began new Mexican Riviera sailings from San Diego in 2026. Active lines this season include Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess, Celebrity, and Silversea. The port has shore power at both terminals — two ships can plug in simultaneously, making it one of California’s greenest cruise operations.

Two Terminals — One Waterfront
B Street Pier & Broadway Pier — Both on North Harbor Drive

Unlike Galveston or Southampton, San Diego’s two terminals are adjacent on the same stretch of waterfront and served by the same parking operators and transport infrastructure. B Street Pier handles the vast majority of sailings. Broadway Pier (Port Pavilion) is used when a third ship requires a berth or for smaller vessels. Both have the same GPS proximity and logistics. Always confirm your terminal from your cruise line documents, but the practical difference is minimal — they are 140 metres apart on North Harbor Drive.

ⓘ No On-Site Overnight Parking at Either Terminal
Unlike Galveston, Southampton, or Dover, the Port of San Diego has no official long-term cruise parking on the pier itself. On-site parking is limited to 4-hour maximum and $1/hour for day visitors. All overnight cruise parking uses off-site garages and lots operated by Ace Parking, ABM Parking, and Park Shuttle & Fly. The good news: several of the best options (BRIC North and BRIC South garages) are directly across the street from B Street Pier.

★ VTS Perspective

San Diego is the cruise port that most rewards an early arrival. The combination of the Embarcadero waterfront, the USS Midway steps from the terminal, Balboa Park a 10-minute Uber north, Coronado accessible by a 15-minute ferry from Broadway Pier, and the Gaslamp Quarter for dinner — with perfect weather in any month — makes for an effortless two-day pre-cruise stay. If you are flying in from the East Coast or international, arrive two days before sailing. The airport is so close and the city so walkable that the logistics are the simplest of any port in this guide programme. Then sail south into the Mexican Riviera with the city’s skyline behind you and the Pacific stretching ahead. There are worse ways to begin a voyage.

Climate & Packing
Monthly Weather — San Diego, California

San Diego has one of the most enviable climates of any city in the United States — consistently mild, dry, and sunny. The average annual temperature is 70°F (21°C) and temperatures rarely exceed 84°F or fall below 44°F. The year-round cruise season (September through May) covers San Diego’s best weather months — dry, clear, and comfortable for pre-cruise exploring. There are two weather quirks worth knowing: “June Gloom” — a marine layer that covers coastal San Diego in overcast grey from late May through June, typically burning off by midday — and Santa Ana winds in autumn, which bring hot, dry desert air from the east and can push temperatures into the 80–90s in October and November.

🍂 Fall — Sep to Nov · VTS Sweet Spot
Best Time to Cruise
Warm, clear, and perfect for deck time. September and October are San Diego at its finest: 72–78°F, clear skies, low humidity, and ocean water still warm from summer. Santa Ana winds bring occasional hot dry spells in Oct–Nov — warm and dramatic rather than uncomfortable. Peak season for Mexican Riviera cruises.
🍬 Winter — Dec to Feb · Peak Cruise Season
Best Value Window
Mild, sunny, and the most popular cruise months. San Diego winters are genuinely pleasant: 65–68°F, occasional rain (February wettest), and clear blue skies between rain events. Mexican Riviera sailings are at their most popular here — passengers escaping winter elsewhere. Book hotels and parking early.
🌸 Spring — Mar to May · Excellent
Excellent Conditions
Warming up — before June Gloom sets in. March through April are beautiful: 68–72°F, minimal rain, increasing sunshine. Panama Canal repositioning sailings depart in April. May starts to see coastal marine layer (June Gloom precursor). Late spring is the end of the cruise season — good value on final sailings.
🌁 Summer — Jun to Aug · Off-Season
June Gloom — few sailings — peak tourist season. The cruise season ends in late May. June brings the marine layer — overcast mornings that clear by noon or not at all. July and August are warm (75–84°F) and dry with the clearest skies of the year. Few or no homeport sailings in summer — ships have repositioned to Alaska.
Month Avg High Avg Low Rain Days Sunshine hrs/day Cruise / Visitor Note
January65°F / 18°C50°F / 10°C67.0Peak Mexican Riviera season. Mild and often sunny. Light jacket for morning departure. Excellent escape from winter for East Coast and Midwest passengers.
February66°F / 19°C51°F / 11°C77.0Wettest month — but San Diego wet means occasional brief showers, not sustained rain. Still mostly sunny. Pre-cruise exploration very comfortable. Wildflowers blooming in Balboa Park.
March66°F / 19°C55°F / 13°C57.5Spring brightening. Fewer rain days, warming sea breeze. San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park at their best. Late season sailings — good value on final Mexican Riviera voyages.
April68°F / 20°C57°F / 14°C48.5VTS sweet spot for spring. Panama Canal repositioning departures. Clear skies, warm sunshine. La Jolla, Coronado, and Old Town all exceptional pre-cruise day options.
May69°F / 21°C60°F / 16°C28.0Season ending — final sailings. Marine layer beginning to build coastally (June Gloom precursor). Mornings can be overcast but afternoons typically clear. Last great month before summer offseason.
June71°F / 22°C62°F / 17°C16.0🌁 June Gloom — marine layer covers coast. Overcast mornings, may not clear. Minimal/no homeport sailings. Still pleasant once marine layer burns off (usually by noon). Peak tourist season begins.
July76°F / 24°C65°F / 18°C010.5Off-season for cruises. No homeport sailings. Driest month. Clearest skies of the year. Peak summer tourist season — hotels expensive. Great for a San Diego city visit.
August77°F / 25°C67°F / 19°C010.0Off-season for cruises. Warmest month. No rain. Long sunny days. Peak beach and tourism season. No homeport sailings — ships repositioning from Alaska return in September.
September76°F / 24°C65°F / 18°C19.5★ VTS top pick. Season opens. Warm, clear, low humidity. Ocean still warm from summer. Pre-cruise Coronado Beach and USS Midway are exceptional. Hotels dropping from summer peaks.
October73°F / 23°C60°F / 16°C28.5Excellent. Santa Ana winds occasionally push temps to 80–90°F for short bursts — warm and dramatic. Clear skies standard. Season at full swing. Panama Canal repositioning. One of the best months to sail from San Diego.
November68°F / 20°C55°F / 13°C47.5Still pleasant. Light jacket for evenings. Panama Canal repositioning sailings early November. Pre-cruise Balboa Park beautiful. Rain events increasing but brief. Great value month before holiday pricing begins.
December66°F / 19°C51°F / 11°C57.0Holiday season — festive San Diego waterfront. Cool but never cold. Light jacket or layer for embarkation mornings. Mexican Riviera sailings popular Christmas and New Year departures.
🌁 June Gloom — What It Is & Why It Matters
“June Gloom” is San Diego’s version of the marine layer — a thick coastal fog and low overcast that forms when cold Pacific Ocean air collides with warmer inland air in late spring and early summer. It typically covers the coast from midnight through mid-morning, sometimes persisting all day. It is grey and cool-feeling, not rainy — and it does not produce precipitation. The good news for cruise passengers: the season ends before June Gloom peaks, and ships heading south into Mexican waters immediately leave the marine layer behind.
What to Pack for San Diego
Layers, Sunscreen & Your Mexican Riviera Kit
☀️ Always — Every Month
Sunscreen SPF 50+ — 266 sunny days per year, UV is high even in cool months

Comfortable walking shoes — the Embarcadero and Gaslamp are best explored on foot

🍬 Winter (Dec–Feb) — Add These
Light-to-mid jacket — evenings on the Embarcadero can be noticeably cool
Extra layer for embarkation morning if an early departure
Rain jacket or compact umbrella — brief showers possible Jan–Feb
🌴 Mexican Riviera & Baja Sailings
Reef-safe sunscreen — required in Los Cabos, Cozumel, and other protected waters

US dollars in small bills for Mexican port shopping and tips
Water shoes for beach landings and tender ports
🌎 Hawaii & Panama Canal Sailings
Formal evening wear — both Holland America and Princess include formal nights
Light rain gear for Panama Canal — tropical downpours can be intense
Binoculars for whale watching (Hawaii season) and Panama Canal transit
Multiple prescription medications with a generous overlap supply
★ VTS Best Time to Sail From San Diego

September is our first choice: the cruise season opens, summer heat is fading, the sky is clear, the ocean warm, and hotel prices are dropping from summer peaks. October runs a very close second — full season, occasional Santa Ana warmth, and the Mexican Riviera at its best. For those who want the most comfortable pre-cruise day in San Diego itself, April is exceptional: warm sunshine, minimal rain, blooming Balboa Park, and the clearest possible sky over the harbour. Avoid June through August — no cruises operate, June Gloom is uninspiring, and summer tourist prices make the city significantly more expensive.

Getting to San Diego
Airport, Amtrak & Ground Transport

San Diego has the best transport logistics of any cruise port in this guide programme. The airport is 2.5 miles from B Street Pier — 10 minutes by taxi or rideshare. The Amtrak station is a two-block walk from the terminal. The MTS Bus 992 connects the airport to the downtown transit hub for $2.50. Passengers from Los Angeles can take the scenic Pacific Surfliner coastal train for under $40 and walk to the ship. For a port in a major US city, San Diego’s accessibility is exceptional.

Getting to San Diego from Southern California
From Los Angeles
Amtrak Pacific Surfliner
LA Union Station direct to San Diego Santa Fe Depot — one of the most scenic train journeys in the US. Departs from downtown LA, runs along the Pacific coast cliffs at Del Mar, arrives two blocks from B Street Pier. 12 daily round trips. Reservations recommended on sailing days.

From Los Angeles Airport (LAX)
Fly to SAN or Drive
LAX to SAN is ~120 miles (~2–3 hrs driving in light traffic — allow 3–4 hrs with LA traffic). Alternatively: short 45-min flight LAX–SAN, then quick taxi to terminal. Many LA-area passengers find flying to SAN more reliable than driving I-5 South.
✈️ 45-min flight · or 🚘 2–4 hrs depending on I-5 traffic
From Phoenix, AZ (~355 miles)
Drive via I-8 West
Interstate 8 West from Phoenix connects directly to San Diego in approximately 5–6 hours. A popular route for Arizona cruise passengers. I-8 arrives in Mission Valley and connects to I-5 South to the Embarcadero. Plan to arrive the night before and stay downtown.
🚘 ~5–6 hrs · I-8 West all the way
From Tijuana / Cross-Border Express (CBX)
Cross-Border Express → Rideshare
International passengers flying into Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) can use the Cross-Border Express bridge ($30 USD one-way) to cross directly into the US airport-side, then take a rideshare to the terminal. ~30–45 min total. Useful for passengers from Mexico or those finding cheaper flights to TIJ.
✈️ TIJ → CBX → Rideshare ~30–45 min total
☄ The Walk from Santa Fe Depot to B Street Pier
The Santa Fe Depot train station (1050 Kettner Blvd) is approximately 0.4 miles — two blocks west — from B Street Pier. On a pleasant San Diego day, it is a completely walkable distance with a carry-on or day bag. With full cruise luggage (two large suitcases plus a carry-on), take a $10 Uber. The walk takes about 8 minutes and follows Kettner Blvd to North Harbor Drive. Worth noting: the trolley station is inside Santa Fe Depot, connecting you to Old Town, Mission Valley, and beyond for a pre-cruise day.
★ VTS Transport Recommendation

For most passengers flying into SAN: take an Uber or Lyft to the pier. The $15–25 cost is trivial relative to the convenience and the airport is so close that the whole process takes 20 minutes from baggage claim. For passengers from Los Angeles: the Pacific Surfliner is a genuinely good option — book it, enjoy the coastal views, and walk (or short rideshare) to the ship from Santa Fe Depot. For Southern California residents driving in: there is no simpler major cruise port in the US. Drop bags with porters, park in BRIC North or South across the street, and board. San Diego’s transport advantage over any other West Coast port is not small — it is the argument for choosing this port over Long Beach or Seattle when the itinerary is similar.

Parking
No Pier Parking — Off-Site Lots Serve Both Terminals
⚠️
There is no long-term parking on the pier at either San Diego cruise terminal. On-site parking is limited to 4-hour maximum at $1/hour for drop-offs and short visits only. All cruise parking uses off-site garages and lots. The good news: the BRIC North and BRIC South garages are directly across North Harbor Drive from B Street Pier — the most convenient off-site parking arrangement at any port in this guide programme. Rates range from $15–$40/day depending on location and booking method.

San Diego parking works differently from every other US port in this guide. Because the terminals sit on a public waterfront managed by the Port of San Diego, the pier area cannot serve as a cruise parking compound. Instead, a network of Ace Parking and ABM Parking garages and surface lots cluster within 0.2–0.6 miles of the terminals, with the two BRIC garages being so close (directly across the street) that they function almost identically to on-site parking. Park Shuttle & Fly serves both the cruise terminal and SAN Airport — useful if you want to leave your car near the airport and are flying home after your cruise.

🏠 Hotel Park-and-Cruise Packages — Often the Best Value
Several hotels near the Embarcadero offer park-and-cruise packages combining one overnight stay with multi-day parking during your sailing. The Manchester Grand Hyatt, Marriott Marquis Gaslamp Quarter, and several Embarcadero-area hotels all offer variants of this. If you are already planning to arrive the night before (which VTS recommends for any port), calculate the total cost (hotel room + parking days) against BRIC North/South rates. For 7+ night sailings, the hotel package often saves $50–100 while getting you the overnight stay VTS recommends.
🔉
Drop Bags Before Parking
Pull up to the B Street Pier drop-off zone first and leave checked bags with porters. Then drive across the street to BRIC or your reserved garage. Walking back from the garage without luggage takes 3 minutes.
📅
Book Garages in Advance
BRIC North and South garages sell out for peak sailings (especially Holland America and Disney departures). Book at aceisparking.com or SpotHero when you book your cruise, not the week before.
📱
SpotHero & ParkWhiz
Apps like SpotHero and ParkWhiz aggregate parking near the terminal and often offer pre-booking discounts vs walking up. Compare rates before committing to any single garage.
📄
No Cash at Most Garages
Most San Diego parking garages operate on credit/debit card or app-based payment. Carry a card for parking and any exit-machine transactions. The PRONTO transit card also works for MTS buses and trolley.
✈️
Flying Home? Park Near SAN
Park Shuttle & Fly and similar services near SAN Airport shuttle you to the terminal and back. Cheaper than BRIC for longer cruises and eliminates the airport taxi cost on return.
🏍
No On-Site Parking on the Pier
Do not attempt to park on the pier itself. On-site spaces are 4-hour maximum and enforced. All cruise passengers must use off-site lots. Plan this in advance — it is the one logistical step San Diego requires.
★ VTS Parking Recommendation

Book BRIC North or BRIC South in advance via aceisparking.com or SpotHero. They are directly across the street from B Street Pier — the closest thing to on-site parking available in San Diego — and the walk to the terminal door is three minutes. For longer voyages (10+ nights) or passengers flying home after the cruise, Park Shuttle & Fly near SAN Airport saves money and eliminates the return taxi cost. And if you are already planning a pre-cruise overnight in the city (which you should), compare hotel park-and-cruise packages before booking parking separately — the math often favours the package.

Embarkation Day
What to Expect on Sailing Day at San Diego

San Diego embarkation is one of the most relaxed in American cruising. The terminals are downtown, the weather is almost always pleasant, the airport is a 10-minute taxi ride away for late arrivals, and the Embarcadero is a genuinely enjoyable place to spend the morning before boarding. The Port of San Diego advises: do not arrive before 10:00 AM — arrive at your assigned boarding time, not earlier. Holland America boarding officially begins at noon, with staterooms ready by approximately 1:00 PM. All lines use staggered windows assigned in their apps approximately 14–21 days before sailing.

Embarkation Day Timeline
Hotel to Onboard — The San Diego Way
1
Morning — Use It Well
Breakfast, USS Midway, or Embarcadero Walk
Boarding does not open until noon. A San Diego embarkation morning is a genuine gift — the weather is almost always cooperative and the waterfront is walkable. Have a proper breakfast in Little Italy (Ironside Fish & Oyster for a decadent brunch, or any of the cafés on India Street), then walk to the USS Midway Museum or along the Embarcadero. You can see your ship moored at B Street Pier from the path. You will be standing on its deck in a few hours.
2
Before Leaving Hotel
Luggage Tags Attached & Digital Check-In Complete
Attach cruise line luggage tags to all checked bags before leaving your hotel. Confirm your assigned boarding time in your cruise line app — this is especially important for Holland America, which enforces its windows. Do not arrive before 10:00 AM per Port of San Diego guidance. Most Embarcadero hotels are a 10–15 minute walk to B Street Pier — you may not need transport at all.
3
At the Terminal
Drop Bags, Park, Check In
Pull up or walk to the B Street Pier drop-off zone on North Harbor Drive. Drop checked bags with porters. If driving: have your ride drop you at the terminal first, then park in BRIC across the street. If walking from a nearby hotel: proceed directly to the pier. Security screening is well-organised and typically faster than most airports. Present boarding pass and passport at check-in counters.
4
From 11:30–12:00
Board & Head to the Lido or Pool Deck
Holland America’s Lido Market buffet opens at 11:30 AM — get lunch the moment you board and avoid the stateroom queue. Staterooms are typically ready by 1:00 PM. Take your day bag to the cabin, drop it, and head to an upper deck with a view over San Diego Bay. The skyline, Coronado Bridge, and the bay in afternoon light are a strong argument for being on deck before departure.
4:00–5:00 PM — Be on Deck
Sailaway from San Diego Bay
The departure from San Diego is one of the great sailaway experiences in American cruising. The ship passes under the Coronado Bridge, the downtown skyline recedes to port, the USS Midway and the Embarcadero fall behind, and then the Pacific opens up ahead. Point Loma to starboard, Tijuana to the south, and the Mexican Riviera a day away. Muster drill is mandatory — check your app for time and station. Be on deck for the moment the ship clears the bay.
⚠ Passport Required for Mexico Sailings — No Exceptions
The Port of San Diego explicitly states that passports are required for cruises to Mexico. Every Holland America, Norwegian, Disney, Princess, and Royal Caribbean Mexican Riviera sailing from San Diego calls at Mexican ports — Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, and others. A US birth certificate plus government ID is not accepted for these sailings. If your passport has expired or will expire within 6 months of your return date, renew it before booking.

★ VTS Embark Day Recommendation

Have breakfast in Little Italy, walk to the USS Midway for an hour, then walk south along the Embarcadero to B Street Pier at your assigned boarding time. The terminal is never far. The weather is almost always good. And the departure from San Diego Bay — passing under the Coronado Bridge with the skyline to port and the Pacific opening ahead — is worth arriving a day early to experience it from the right side of the gangway. On disembarkation: self-assist and you can be in an Uber to SAN Airport within 45 minutes of the gangway opening. One of the cleanest exit experiences in American cruising.

The Night Before & Sailing Day Morning
Explore San Diego — America’s Finest City, Earned Before the Gangway

San Diego is one of the few US cruise ports where the pre-cruise destination is genuinely competitive with wherever the ship is going. Two days here — USS Midway, Balboa Park and the Zoo, Coronado by ferry, Little Italy for dinner, Gaslamp Quarter for a nightcap — sets the right frame of mind for a Mexican Riviera or Pacific sailing. The city is walkable, the weather is almost always perfect, and the Embarcadero puts you within a 15-minute walk of most of what matters. Arrive two days early. You will not regret it.

🚶
San Diego’s Embarcadero: 10/10 Walkability. Fish Tacos — multiple locations

Dinner in Little Italy that night — Ironside or wherever you can get a reservation. Spend day two on the Coronado Ferry in the morning, Gaslamp Quarter in the afternoon, and final pre-cruise dinner on the Embarcadero watching the sun set over the bay. On sailing day: walk to the terminal. You have used San Diego the way it deserves to be used. Now board your ship and head south into the Pacific. You have earned it.

2025–2026 Season & Events
San Diego — Key Dates Worth Knowing
SEP
Cruise Season Opens — September 2025
Holland America Line opened the 2025–2026 season in September 2025 as San Diego’s primary homeport partner. 107 voyages across the season with ~390,000 passengers projected. Norwegian Cruise Line homeporting for the first time with Norwegian Jade. Royal Caribbean began new Mexican Riviera sailings from San Diego in 2026. The season runs through May 2026 with the highest concentration of departures October through April.
Season Opens
OCT
VTS Sweet Spot — October & November
October and November offer the best combination of cruise conditions from San Diego: warm, clear weather; busy season with multiple lines operating; Santa Ana winds bringing occasional dramatic warm days; and hotel prices below peak summer levels. October is VTS’s single top recommendation for a pre-cruise stay in San Diego. The USS Midway, Balboa Park, and La Jolla are all at their finest. No June Gloom, no summer tourist pricing.
Best Time
APR
Panama Canal Repositioning Sailings — April
April is the primary month for Panama Canal repositioning sailings from San Diego, as ships transition from winter Mexican Riviera programmes to Alaska summer deployments (via Pacific coastal voyages). Holland America and Princess both operate Panama Canal sailings in April. These are typically 14–18 day voyages — among the most remarkable itineraries available from a US West Coast port. Book well in advance; these sailings are popular with experienced cruisers.
Special Itinerary
NOV
Panama Canal Repositioning Sailings — November
November also sees Panama Canal departures as ships reposition south from Alaska back to Mexican Riviera winter programmes. Combined with excellent San Diego weather and post-summer hotel value, November is one of the best months for a pre-cruise visit. The Gaslamp Quarter and Little Italy dining are running at full strength without summer tourist volumes.
Special Itinerary
JAN–FEB
🐳
San Diego Whale Watching Season — Dec to Apr
Gray whales migrate along the San Diego coast from December through April on their round trip between Alaska and Baja California — one of the longest mammal migrations on Earth. Point Loma and the waters around the Embarcadero are excellent viewing points. Whale watching boat tours depart from Fisherman’s Landing and Shelter Island (15-min Uber from the terminal). If your pre-cruise stay falls in this window, a whale watching tour is an exceptional complement to any Pacific sailing.
Wildlife Event
JUN–AUG
🌁
Off-Season & June Gloom
June through August is the cruise off-season in San Diego — ships have repositioned to Alaska and almost no homeport sailings operate. June Gloom (marine layer) covers the coast with grey overcast, typically burning off by midday. Hotel prices are at their annual peak due to summer tourism demand. If visiting San Diego in summer for non-cruise purposes, expect beautiful afternoons; if planning a cruise, note that the season does not run June–August.
Off-Season
Common Questions
San Diego Cruise Port — FAQ
San Diego International Airport (SAN) is 2.5 miles from B Street Pier — approximately 10 minutes by taxi or rideshare and $15–25. It is one of the closest major commercial airports to a US cruise terminal in the country. Both Uber and Lyft are available at SAN (unlike Galveston, which is Lyft-exclusive). MTS Bus Route 992 runs from SAN to the Santa Fe Depot area (two blocks from B Street Pier) for $2.50, taking about 15 minutes.
No long-term parking is available on the pier itself. On-site parking is limited to 4 hours maximum at $1/hour for drop-offs and short visits only. All cruise parking uses off-site garages. The BRIC North and BRIC South garages (operated by Ace Parking) are directly across North Harbor Drive from B Street Pier — a 2–3 minute walk. Rates are approximately $20–30/day. Book in advance at aceisparking.com or SpotHero. Other options include the Wyndham Bayside garage (~$20–35/day) and Park Shuttle & Fly (~$10–24/day with shuttle).
Yes, for virtually all San Diego sailings. The Port of San Diego explicitly states that passports are required for Mexico cruises — and the vast majority of San Diego itineraries call at Mexican ports (Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, and others). A US birth certificate plus government-issued photo ID is only sufficient for closed-loop sailings that do not call at foreign ports. For Hawaii, Tahiti, and Panama Canal sailings, a passport is also required. Renew your passport if it expires within 6 months of your cruise return date.
The Port of San Diego advises passengers not to arrive before 10:00 AM. Holland America boarding officially begins at noon, though it may start as early as 11:30 AM. Staterooms are typically ready by approximately 1:00 PM. All lines use staggered arrival windows assigned through their apps approximately 14–21 days before sailing. Arrive at your assigned time — not earlier, and not significantly later. The all-aboard cutoff is 90 minutes before the published departure time.
Yes — the Santa Fe Depot (1050 Kettner Blvd) is approximately 0.4 miles / two blocks east of B Street Pier. It is a comfortable 8-minute walk with a day bag or carry-on. With multiple large suitcases, a short $10 Uber or taxi is more practical. The Pacific Surfliner from Los Angeles takes approximately 2 hours 45 minutes and runs 12 daily round trips — it is a scenic coastal route and an excellent way to arrive for LA-area passengers.
September through May. The cruise season does not operate in summer (June through August) — ships reposition to Alaska and other summer deployments from late April/May and do not return until September. The 2025–2026 season comprises 107 voyages with approximately 390,000 passengers. Peak season is October through March for Mexican Riviera sailings, with Panama Canal repositioning sailings in April and November.
B Street Pier (1140 N Harbor Drive) handles the vast majority of sailings — all Holland America, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Disney, Carnival, and Princess ships use B Street. Broadway Pier / Port Pavilion (1000 N Harbor Drive) is used for overflow when B Street is at capacity, for smaller vessels, and for some Silversea sailings. The two piers are 140 metres apart on North Harbor Drive and served by the same parking operators. Confirm your terminal in your cruise line booking documents, but the practical logistics are nearly identical.
June Gloom is San Diego’s coastal marine layer — a thick low overcast that forms in late May and June when cold Pacific air meets warmer inland air. It typically covers the coast from overnight until mid-morning, sometimes persisting all day. It does not produce rain and is grey rather than dramatic. The good news: the cruise season ends before June Gloom peaks, and any ship departing San Diego immediately sails south into warmer Mexican waters, leaving the marine layer behind within hours.
