North America’s Gateway to Alaska
Canada Place — The Most Beautiful Cruise Terminal in North America

Canada Place is the cruise terminal that defines what a cruise departure should look like. The iconic five white sail-shaped roof panels jut into Burrard Inlet against a backdrop of the North Shore mountains, with cruise ships moored alongside the convention centre in the heart of downtown Vancouver. The terminal was built for Expo 86 and has been receiving Alaska-bound cruise passengers for 40 years — the Holland America Line’s Noordam was the first ship to dock here on April 28, 1986. More than 30 million cruise passengers have passed through since. In 2026, with approximately 1.4 million passengers and ~360 cruise calls expected, Vancouver is having its biggest year ever. Named North America’s Leading Cruise Port at the 2025 World Travel Awards.

Vancouver serves as the primary Canadian homeport for Alaska Inside Passage cruises. Most ships offer the iconic Alaska itinerary — northbound to Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Sitka, Glacier Bay, and the Hubbard Glacier — either as a round-trip from Vancouver or as a one-way “cruise-tour” continuing by rail and motorcoach into the Alaska interior. The season runs from late April to mid-October, with the peak period May through September. Outside the Alaska season, Vancouver also sees Pacific coastal repositioning sailings, Hawaii cruises, and World Voyage segment calls. One entry requirement that catches passengers off-guard: Canada requires an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying into the country. US citizens are exempt by land or sea but require a valid passport.

“You leave from downtown Vancouver with mountains behind you, city in front of you, and ocean in every direction. The Inside Passage opens north. There is no more dramatic cruise departure in North America.”
★ 2026 — Record Season · New Lines · Five-Ship Days
The 2026 Alaska cruise season is Vancouver’s biggest ever: 1.4 million passengers, ~360 cruise calls, and several firsts. Virgin Voyages and Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection are making their first-ever Vancouver calls. Disney Magic is homeporting at Canada Place for the first time (joining the established Disney Wonder). Five ships will make their debut Vancouver visits in 2026. July 25 is the busiest single day — five ships including Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas, Princess’ Grand Princess, and Holland America’s Koningsdam. Port officials estimate 40,000–50,000 passengers per peak Friday–Monday weekend. Holland America Line alone is expected to bring nearly 300,000 passengers and make 70 visits. Book pre-cruise hotels months ahead for any July or August sailing.

★ VTS Perspective

No pre-cruise city in this guide programme matches Vancouver for natural beauty within the city itself. The mountains appear at the end of every street that runs north. Stanley Park is 1,000 acres of old-growth forest on the city’s doorstep. Gastown, Granville Island, and Yaletown are within walking distance of the terminal. The food scene is world-class. And then the ship moves away from Canada Place, and the North Shore mountains rise behind the five white sails, and the Inner Harbour opens ahead, and the Inside Passage begins — Howe Sound, the Strait of Georgia, the channels narrowing as you move north toward Juneau and Glacier Bay. Few cruises in the world begin from a more beautiful city, or end at a more extraordinary destination. Arrive two days early. Vancouver deserves it.

Climate & Packing
Monthly Weather — Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver has a temperate oceanic climate — one of the mildest in Canada but notably wet. The city sits between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains in a rain shadow effect that makes it warmer than the rest of Canada in winter but gives it a famously rainy autumn and early spring. The Alaska cruise season runs from late April through October — a window that covers Vancouver’s best weather. July and August are the driest and warmest months (22–23°C / 72–73°F) with the most sunshine. May and June offer spectacular pre-cruise city conditions: still relatively dry, genuinely warm, and with the mountains at their most dramatic when spring snow still dusts the North Shore peaks. The critical packing rule for Vancouver: always carry a waterproof layer regardless of the month. Even in July, a Pacific rain system can arrive within hours of a perfectly clear morning.

🌸 Spring — Apr & May
VTS Top Pick — City & Mountains at Their Best
Fresh, often sunny, lower rain than summer — peak mountain beauty. April: 14°C / 57°F, spring blooms, cherry blossoms (early April peak), snow still on the North Shore peaks. May: 18°C / 64°F, genuinely pleasant, longer days, pre-summer crowds. The mountains behind the city are extraordinary with spring snow caps. Stanley Park and Granville Island at their most enjoyable.
☀️ Summer — Jun to Aug
Warmest & Driest · Peak Season
Best weather of the year — long days, warm, relatively dry. June: 22°C / 72°F, 9.4 hrs sunshine/day. July: 23°C / 73°F — driest month, most sunshine (~10 hrs/day), 15+ hrs daylight. August: similar to July, still excellent. Peak cruise season and peak hotel prices. Book pre-cruise accommodation 3–6 months ahead.
🍂 Shoulder — Sep & Oct
Good Value · Autumn Colours
September: warm and dry. October: cooling and wetter — season closes. September: 18°C / 64°F, still pleasant, autumn colours beginning on the North Shore, good value on hotels. October: 13°C / 55°F, rain increasing, season closing mid-month. The Norwegian Encore departed Oct 13 as the final 2026 ship.
⛈️ Off-Season — Nov to Mar
Very few cruise departures — but Vancouver is beautiful. November–March: 7–10°C / 45–50°F, rainy, short days. Skiing on Grouse Mountain, Cypress, and Whistler (1.5 hrs north). Almost no homeport cruise activity. Excellent for a city visit without the summer tourist volumes.

May18°C / 64°F10°C / 50°F127.7★ VTS top pick. Warm, increasingly dry, long days. Mountains still snow-capped and spectacular. Granville Island, Stanley Park, and Gastown at their best. Pre-cruise Vancouver is exceptional in May.
June22°C / 72°F14°C / 57°F119.4★ Excellent. Warm, good sunshine, manageable tourist volumes before July peak. English Bay beach and Seawall cycling ideal. Waterproof still useful for occasional showers.
July23°C / 73°F17°C / 63°F610.0★ Driest & sunniest month. 15+ hrs daylight. Warmest. Peak season — hotels at maximum pricing. Book 4–6 months ahead. Sunset at 9:30 PM. July 25: busiest single day (5 ships).
August23°C / 73°F17°C / 63°F79.5★ Near-identical to July. Hottest and driest. English Bay beach packed. Stanley Park extraordinary. Peak hotel prices. Wildfire smoke from BC interior occasionally affects air quality.
September18°C / 64°F13°C / 55°F97.6Excellent value. Still warm, rain increasing slightly, crowds reducing from August. Autumn colours begin on the North Shore. Light waterproof for evenings. Good pre-cruise hotel value vs July/August.
October13°C / 55°F8°C / 46°F154.8Season closing (Norwegian Encore departed Oct 13, 2026 as final ship). Rainy and cooling. Warm jacket + waterproof. Autumn colours on North Shore peaks. Last sailings of the season.
November9°C / 48°F5°C / 41°F182.8Off-season. Wet, dark, ski season beginning at Whistler. No homeport cruise activity. City excellent for a winter visit without tourist context.
December8°C / 46°F3°C / 37°F182.0Off-season. Mildest winter in Canada for a major city (rarely freezes). Christmas lights and the Bright Nights train in Stanley Park. No cruise context.
💨 Wildfire Smoke — July & August Awareness
British Columbia’s interior and the broader Pacific Northwest have experienced increasing wildfire smoke events in recent summers. In July and August, smoke from inland fires can drift into Vancouver, temporarily reducing air quality and mountain visibility. This is intermittent and unpredictable — many summers are completely clear, others have periodic hazy days. Check the BC Air Quality Health Index (aqhi.gov.bc.ca) before and during your pre-cruise Vancouver stay. On clear days, the North Shore mountains behind the city are one of the most spectacular urban backdrops in the world.
What to Pack
Packing for Vancouver & Alaska Inside Passage
☀️ Always — Every Month
Waterproof jacket — Pacific rain can arrive within hours of a clear morning; non-negotiable year-round
Mid-layer (fleece or light down) — even in July, evenings near the water can be notably cool
Comfortable walking shoes — Vancouver is an exceptional walking and cycling city; the Seawall is 28 km
Valid passport — required for all passengers; Alaska sailings are international voyages
eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) — required for visa-exempt non-US foreign nationals flying into Canada · apply at eta.gc.ca before flying
🌸 May & June (VTS Sweet Spots)
Layers for variable days — mornings often cool (10–14°C), afternoons warmer
Light waterproof — spring showers possible; brief but can be heavy
Sunscreen — UV can be deceptively strong on clear Pacific Northwest days
🌎 Alaska Inside Passage Sailings
Full waterproof outer layer — Alaska weather is dramatically different from Vancouver; prepare for rain at every port
Warm hat and gloves — glacier viewing on deck can be very cold even in summer
Binoculars — wildlife (humpback whales, orcas, bald eagles, bears) throughout the Inside Passage
Formal wear — HAL, Princess, Celebrity, and Crystal all maintain formal or smart casual dress codes
CAD cash for pre-cruise Vancouver spending · USD often accepted in Alaska ports
⛷ Cruise-Tour Add-Ons (Rail & Motorcoach)
Warm layers for Denali and the Alaska interior — significantly colder than Inside Passage ports
Hiking footwear if venturing beyond lodge activities
Camera with long zoom — wildlife encounters are common on rail journeys through the interior
★ VTS Best Time to Sail From Vancouver

May is the single best month for a pre-cruise Vancouver stay: the cherry blossoms are recent memory, the North Shore peaks are still snow-capped and spectacular behind the city, the days are genuinely warm (18°C), relatively dry, and the tourist volumes haven’t reached the July peak. June combines warm temperatures with the longest days of the year (sunset after 9:30 PM by mid-June) and excellent conditions for cycling the Seawall, exploring Granville Island, and dining outdoors. July and August deliver the best weather aboard ship — Alaska ports are warmest and driest — but pre-cruise hotel prices in Vancouver are at their annual peak. Book well ahead. September is the best value month: warm, relatively dry, the mountains beginning to turn amber and gold, and hotel rates falling from peak. There is no bad month to experience Vancouver — but there are significantly better months for combining the city with the cruise.

Getting to Canada Place
YVR Airport, SkyTrain & Ground Transport

Canada Place has one of the most convenient airport connections of any cruise terminal in this guide programme. The Canada Line SkyTrain runs directly from YVR Airport to Waterfront Station — a 5-minute walk from the terminal — in approximately 25 minutes, for CA$4.55 (~USD $3.32) (daytime). This single fact defines Vancouver’s transport advantage: there is no easier airport-to-terminal connection at any major cruise port on the West Coast of North America. The SkyTrain is not just the cheapest option — it is also the most reliable, immune to road traffic, and runs every 4–6 minutes throughout the day. For solo travellers and couples with manageable luggage, the SkyTrain is the definitive choice. Groups with multiple large suitcases may prefer a taxi or rideshare for the direct-to-terminal convenience.

Canada Place is in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Most waterfront and downtown hotels are within a 5–20 minute walk of the terminal. Hotels in the Coal Harbour area (Fairmont Pacific Rim, Pan Pacific, Westin Bayshore) are essentially adjacent to Canada Place. Hotels in Yaletown or Gastown are a comfortable 15–20 minute walk along the waterfront. Taxi from any downtown hotel: CA$8 (~USD $5.84)–15. The most pleasant embarkation morning possible: walk to your ship through downtown Vancouver.
Best for: Pre-cruise stay downtown · walking to the ship
ⓘ Royal Caribbean: Your Terminal Is Ballantyne, Not Canada Place
If you are sailing with Royal Caribbean, your terminal is the Ballantyne Cruise Terminal at 1 Centennial Road, Vancouver — approximately 1 km east of Canada Place. The two terminals are not walkable with luggage. From the SkyTrain, exit at Waterfront Station and take a short taxi or Uber (~CA$8 (~USD $5.84)–12) to Ballantyne, or take the SkyTrain one more stop to Main Street-Science World (closer to Ballantyne area) and taxi from there. Do not enter “Canada Place” in your GPS if sailing Royal Caribbean.
★ VTS Transport Recommendation

Take the Canada Line SkyTrain from YVR Level 3. CA$4.55 (~USD $3.32), 25 minutes, every 5 minutes, immune to traffic. Exit at Waterfront Station. Walk 5 minutes west to Canada Place. You will see the five white sails from the station exit. There is no more convenient airport-to-cruise-terminal connection at any major North American cruise port. The only exception: if you are arriving after 6:30 PM with multiple large suitcases and a group of 4+, the flat-rate taxi (CA$36 (~USD $26)–46 split between passengers) becomes a rational alternative. But for most cruise passengers, the SkyTrain wins on every measure.

Parking
Canada Place Underground & Alternatives — CA$50 (~USD $36)/Day On-Site

Downtown Vancouver is one of the most expensive parking cities in Canada, and Canada Place parking reflects that reality. The on-site underground garage (Impark) starts at CA$50 (~USD $36) per day for cruise passengers — pre-booking is strongly recommended for a guaranteed space, especially during peak summer weeks when parking fills quickly. For passengers driving to the port, the most important planning decision is whether the on-site convenience justifies the cost vs off-site alternatives. For a 7-night Alaska cruise, on-site parking costs approximately CA$350 (~USD $256) — at which point a taxi from a nearby hotel (if you drove to Vancouver the night before and left the car at a lower-cost lot) may be the better combination. The SkyTrain from YVR remains the smartest overall approach for flying passengers.

Pre-Book On-Site for Peak Season
During peak Alaska cruise season (June–August), Canada Place underground parking fills quickly on peak departure weekends. Pre-book at impark.com for a guaranteed space and the best available rate. Walk-up rates may be higher or unavailable on the busiest summer Saturdays.
🚙
Enter via Howe Street Ramp to P1
Canada Place underground parking entrance is via the Howe Street ramp to P1. Follow the cruise terminal parking signage from the P1 level. No in/out privileges for daily cruise parkers. Luggage drop-off zones are on P1 between parking and the terminal.
📷
Photograph Your Space
The Canada Place underground garage spans multiple levels. After a 7-night Alaska cruise, the exact level and section can be difficult to recall. Photograph the level letter and section number before walking to the terminal entrance.
💳
Payment — All Major Cards Accepted
All major credit and debit cards accepted at Canada Place Impark. The HangTag app and Scan-to-Pay QR code option also available — useful for extending parking remotely if needed. No cash required.
🚋
Consider: No Car at All
For flying passengers, the Canada Line SkyTrain from YVR to Waterfront Station (CA$4.55 (~USD $3.32)) eliminates parking entirely. Vancouver is extremely walkable from the terminal. The pre-cruise overnight recommendation (stay downtown near Canada Place) makes driving to the port unnecessary for the vast majority of cruise passengers who fly in.
US Passengers Driving Cross-Border
US passengers driving from Seattle or other US cities: the border crossing at Peace Arch (Blaine, WA) is 50 km south of Vancouver. Allow extra time on cruise departure days. US citizens need only a passport for land border entry (no eTA required for land/sea entry to Canada). Downtown Vancouver driving and parking logistics apply from the border onward.
★ VTS Parking Recommendation

For flying passengers: do not drive at all. Take the Canada Line SkyTrain from YVR for CA$4.55 (~USD $3.32) and walk 5 minutes from Waterfront Station to Canada Place. Spend the parking money on a pre-cruise dinner at one of Vancouver’s waterfront restaurants instead. For Canadian residents driving to the port from the Lower Mainland or interior BC: pre-book the Canada Place Impark garage if you want maximum convenience (CA$50 (~USD $36)/day, steps from the ship), or book a hotel park-and-cruise package if sailing 7+ nights — the total cost is almost always lower and you get the pre-cruise overnight that Vancouver deserves. For a 7-night Alaska sailing, CA$350 (~USD $256) in on-site parking vs. a well-chosen park-and-cruise hotel package at CA$200 (~USD $146)–250 is not a close comparison.

Embarkation Day — Canada Place, Vancouver
Sailing Day at One of the World’s Most Beautiful Cruise Terminals

Embarkation at Canada Place is one of the finest cruise boarding experiences in the world — not in spite of Vancouver but because of it. The terminal opens at noon for most Alaska sailings, which depart 4:00–5:00pm, giving passengers who stayed in the city a full morning with Stanley Park, Gastown, or the Seawall before arriving at the gangway. If you are staying at the Pan Pacific (directly connected to Canada Place by interior walkway), the Fairmont Waterfront, or the Fairmont Pacific Rim, your luggage can be transferred to the ship by the hotel concierge team while you spend the morning in the city. All cruise lines at Vancouver use a staggered arrival window system — arrive no earlier than 20 minutes before your assigned time to avoid waiting outside the terminal.

✎ Vancouver Canada Place — 2026 Terminal Notes
Canada Place has two cruise berths (Berths 1 and 2) and can simultaneously handle two large ships. Holland America operates approximately 70 Alaska sailings from Vancouver in 2026, making it the primary line and primary terminal user. Princess Cruises also uses Canada Place extensively for Alaska season. Celebrity and Royal Caribbean use Canada Place for some Alaska sailings. Norwegian also operates from Vancouver to Alaska. All lines at Canada Place share the same terminal building and port approach — the terminal letter or berth on your boarding documents identifies which gangway you use; the building entrance and check-in hall are shared.

Embarkation Morning Timeline
Your Vancouver Morning Before Alaska Boarding
1
Morning — Stanley Park or Gastown Before Check-In
Vancouver Gives You the Morning — Use It
Canada Place check-in opens at noon, giving passengers staying in the city a full morning. Stanley Park (15-minute walk from Canada Place): the 1,001-acre urban forest with the Seawall circling its perimeter is the finest pre-cruise morning walk available from any Canadian port — the view from the Seawall across Burrard Inlet toward the North Shore mountains, with the cruise ships visible at Canada Place to the southeast, is a Vancouver experience that begins the Alaska sailing in the correct spirit. Gastown (10-minute walk east from Canada Place): Vancouver’s historic brick-paved warehouse district with the famous Steam Clock, independent coffee shops, and boutiques. Excellent for a pre-boarding coffee and breakfast at Finch’s or Café Medina (nearby Gastown/Yaletown area, book ahead for Medina on weekends). Granville Island Public Market (20 minutes by taxi or False Creek ferry): the best food market in Western Canada — artisan producers, fresh seafood, baked goods, local produce. The False Creek ferry back connects to the waterfront near Canada Place.
2
10:30–11:30 AM — Hotel Check-Out & Luggage
Pan Pacific / Fairmont Hotels: Luggage Directly to Ship
Hotels immediately adjacent to or connected with Canada Place offer a unique logistical advantage: the Pan Pacific Vancouver (connected to Canada Place by interior walkway) and the Fairmont Waterfront (2-minute walk) both operate luggage services that transfer your bags directly to the ship while you spend the morning in the city. Confirm this service with the hotel concierge the evening before. Other hotels: attach cruise luggage tags (printed from your cruise app) to all checked bags before checkout. Your hotel will store bags until you are ready to walk to the terminal, or a taxi to Canada Place handles the final transfer. At the terminal: porters at the curbside entrance collect tagged bags and deliver to your cabin by mid-afternoon.
3
Noon — Terminal Arrival & Check-In
Canada Place — The Most Scenic Terminal in North America
Arrive at Canada Place from noon within your assigned window (arrive no earlier than 20 minutes before your assigned time). The terminal building — those famous white fabric “sails” stretching along the Burrard Inlet waterfront — is one of the most architecturally distinctive cruise terminals in the world. Sequence: porter drop at curbside → security screening (airport-style, no shoe removal required) → check-in desk (app boarding pass required, priority lanes for eligible guests) → terminal waiting area → boarding call. The waiting area has views across Burrard Inlet toward the North Shore mountains — genuinely one of the most pleasant terminal waiting experiences anywhere. If arriving from YVR by cruise line transfer: transfers depart YVR 10am–12:30pm and deliver directly to Canada Place; book at least several weeks in advance through your cruise line.
Afternoon — Alaska Inside Passage Departure
The Inside Passage Begins — Be on Deck
Most Alaska sailings depart Vancouver between 4pm and 5pm. Cabins ready by approximately 1:30pm; the Lido deck buffet is open from boarding. Complete digital eMuster (HAL, Celebrity, RC, Princess all offer app-based completion before gangway check-in — the fastest option; do it before leaving the terminal). Burrard Inlet departure: as the ship eases from Canada Place and turns west through Burrard Inlet toward the Lion’s Gate Bridge, the Vancouver skyline builds to port, Stanley Park’s forest fills the right bank, and the North Shore mountains rise ahead. The Lion’s Gate Bridge — suspended in elegant 1938 Art Deco geometry — passes overhead at close range; the ship clears the span with remarkable precision given the ship’s height. Beyond the bridge, Howe Sound and the beginning of the Inside Passage opens ahead. The Alaska wilderness begins at this moment. Be on the bow deck for the bridge transit. It will not disappoint.

Embarkation Checklist — Canada Place Vancouver
Documents, Port Logistics & Day-Of Essentials
📄 Critical Documents
Passport — required for all Alaska sailings from Vancouver (international departure from Canada, arriving in US ports including Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan); birth certificate + ID not sufficient for international itineraries
Canadian entry documentation — USA passport holders: no visa required for Canada; most other nationalities: verify Canadian entry requirements (eTA or visa) at canada.ca/eta before travel; processed online in minutes
Boarding pass downloaded offline — HAL Navigator app, Princess MedallionClass, Celebrity Xpress Pass, Royal App, or NCL app — complete check-in at least 3–7 days before sailing and save boarding pass for offline access
Assigned boarding window noted — in your cruise line app; arrive no earlier than 20 minutes before (HAL policy, others similar); early arrival means waiting in the queue outside
Travel insurance documentation — policy number and emergency contact accessible; particularly important for Alaska sailings where remote port calls (Glacier Bay, Tracy Arm) involve wilderness areas far from medical facilities
⚓ Canada Place Logistics
Luggage tags attached to all checked bags — from cruise app; Pan Pacific and Fairmont Waterfront can transfer bags directly to ship; all other hotels: tagged bags to terminal curbside porter
YVR transfer booked (if needed) — cruise-line organised airport transfers depart YVR 10am–12:30pm, delivering to Canada Place; book several weeks ahead; alternative: SkyTrain Canada Line from YVR to Waterfront Station (30 min, $4.55 (~USD $3.32)) then 10-min walk to Canada Place
eMuster completed on app before arrival (HAL, Celebrity, Princess, RC, NCL all support pre-boarding digital muster) — the fastest boarding experience when muster is complete before stepping onto the ship
Canadian dollars or contactless card ready for morning activities — Granville Island Market, Gastown coffee, Stanley Park concession stands — all accept cards but small CAD cash useful for tips and food stalls
🏢 Alaska Essentials
Waterproof outer layer in carry-on — Alaska weather changes fast; waterproof jacket or shell accessible from embarkation day even if in checked luggage (pack separately in day bag for embarkation and first port days)
Medications in carry-on — checked luggage arrives at cabin by ~3pm; all prescriptions and evening doses in hand luggage
Shore excursions pre-booked for Alaska ports — particularly Glacier Bay (NPS ranger-led programs, book through cruise line), Denali (if Seward/Whittier itinerary), whale watching Juneau (book before sailing; best operators sell out early season)
Be on the bow deck for Lions Gate Bridge transit — 4–5pm, roughly 30–60 min after departure — the 1938 suspension bridge clearing overhead, Stanley Park to port, Howe Sound and the Inside Passage opening ahead — the Alaska sailing begins here

Disembarkation at Canada Place
Ending Your Alaska Sailing in Vancouver
SituationVTS Recommendation & Transport
Flying home from YVR same daySkyTrain Canada Line from Waterfront Station (10-min walk from Canada Place) to YVR airport: 30 minutes, $4.55 (~USD $3.32). Or taxi: $35 (~USD $26)–45, 25–35 min. Allow 3 hours for international departures from YVR. Self-assist disembarkation from Canada Place begins ~7:30am; a 10:30am+ flight is a comfortable target. YVR is an efficient airport but US customs pre-clearance (at YVR for US-bound flights) adds time on busy mornings.
Post-cruise Vancouver nightsHotel storage or direct taxi from Canada Place. The VTS post-cruise Vancouver recommendation: at least 1–2 nights at a hotel near Stanley Park or Gastown/Yaletown. Activities that don’t work on the sailing day (Capilano Suspension Bridge, Whistler day trip, Victoria by BC Ferries from Tsawwassen) all work beautifully post-cruise without a boarding deadline.
One-way Alaska cruises (Seward or Whittier end)For one-way Vancouver-north or south-Vancouver itineraries: Alaska Airlines and Delta serve Anchorage (ANC) from YVR. From Seward or Whittier end: Alaska Railroad connects Seward/Whittier to Anchorage for ANC flights. Book return flights from ANC when booking the one-way cruise.
Canada/US customs on disembarkationAlaska itineraries return to Canada (Vancouver) from US ports. Canadians and US citizens disembark with passport to standard Canadian customs (straightforward, typically 20–40 min). Other nationalities: verify re-entry to Canada requirements; some nationalities require a different eTA for return. Check canada.ca before sailing.
★ VTS Embarkation Day Take on Vancouver

Canada Place is the cruise terminal that makes passengers say “I should have arrived a day earlier.” The Stanley Park Seawall in the morning, the Lions Gate Bridge transit at sailing time, the North Shore mountains visible from the terminal waiting area — Vancouver gives the Alaska cruise a pre-credit sequence that sets the wilderness tone before the ship has moved a metre. The morning is yours until noon. Use it. Walk the Seawall. Have coffee in Gastown. And be on the bow deck when the ship approaches the Lions Gate Bridge at 5pm, because the passage from the city into Howe Sound and the Inside Passage beyond is the moment the Alaska sailing actually begins.

Before You Board
Explore Vancouver — Arrive Two Days Early & Earn the Departure

Vancouver consistently ranks among the world’s most livable and most beautiful cities — and it earns both titles without effort. Mountains appear at the end of every north-facing street. 1,000 acres of old-growth rainforest sit inside the city limits. The waterfront is extraordinary in every direction from Canada Place. The food scene is world-class, with the Pacific, Asia, and Canada’s Indigenous food cultures all converging in the same city blocks. Arrive two days before your sailing minimum. Arrive three days if this is your first time. Vancouver is the pre-cruise city that converts cruise passengers into Vancouver travellers — many people book a second cruise from here specifically to spend more time in the city before sailing.

⏰ Two Perfect Days in Vancouver — VTS Pre-Cruise Itinerary
Assumes sailing day departure ~4–5 PM. Arriving 2 nights before.
DAY 1 AM
Stanley Park Seawall — Cycle or Walk — Rent a Mobi bike (CA$12 (~USD $8.76)/day) at Canada Place or near the park entrance and cycle the 10 km Seawall anticlockwise (scenic direction): Coal Harbour, Brockton Point (totem poles), Lions Gate Bridge view at Prospect Point, Third Beach, English Bay, and back along the waterfront. Allow 1.5–2 hours cycling, 3–4 hours walking the whole loop. The North Shore mountains are behind you for the entire route. This is the finest urban cycling experience in Canada.
DAY 1 PM
Granville Island Public Market — Take the Aquabus from the foot of Thurlow St (CA$5 (~USD $3.65) each way, 5 minutes) or the False Creek Ferries from Science World to Granville Island. The Public Market has BC salmon, fresh Pacific Dungeness crab, artisan cheeses, pierogies, charcuterie boards, and the best collection of hot sauce in Western Canada. Free to enter. Eat lunch at a picnic table by the water. Spend the afternoon in the galleries, pottery studios, and independent shops on the island. Then walk or ferry back to downtown for dinner in Yaletown or Gastown.
DAY 2 AM
Capilano Suspension Bridge & North Shore — Take a taxi or rideshare (~CA$20 (~USD $15)–30) to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park in North Vancouver (20 min from downtown). The 140-metre suspension bridge across the Capilano Canyon, Treetops Adventure canopy walkways, and the Cliffwalk are extraordinary: Capilano draws 1.1 million visitors annually and consistently reviews as one of BC’s top experiences. Admission ~CA$62 (~USD $45) (book at capbridge.com). Note: Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver is free and has the same dramatic rainforest canyon setting with no admission charge — a genuinely excellent budget alternative. Combine Capilano with a gondola ride up Grouse Mountain for panoramic views of the city, Burrard Inlet, and the North Shore peaks.
DAY 2 PM
Gastown & Pre-Cruise Dinner — Return to Vancouver and walk through Gastown: cobblestone streets, the 1977 steam clock on the corner of Water and Cambie (it whistles every 15 minutes), independent restaurants, and BC craft beer bars. Pre-cruise dinner at Miku Vancouver (steps from Canada Place, Aburi flame-seared sushi, outstanding waterfront views) or at the Botanist Bar inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim for cocktails. Then: luggage tags on, app confirmed, boarding pass saved offline, waterproof packed. Sleep.

★ VTS Pre-Cruise Vancouver Recommendation

Two full days, minimum. Day one: rent a Mobi bike at Canada Place and cycle the Stanley Park Seawall anticlockwise — Coal Harbour, totem poles at Brockton Point, Lions Gate Bridge from Prospect Point, Third Beach, English Bay, back along the Burrard Bridge waterway. Aquabus to Granville Island for lunch in the Public Market. Walk back through Yaletown for a late afternoon coffee. Pre-cruise dinner at Miku on the waterfront. Day two: taxi to Capilano Suspension Bridge in the morning, gondola to Grouse Mountain for the city panorama, back to Gastown for the afternoon and evening. Sailing day morning: one last Seawall loop from your hotel, then walk to Canada Place for your check-in window. The ship passes under Lions Gate Bridge as you leave. You were just standing at the top of the mountain looking at that bridge from the other side. It is the finest possible context for an Alaska departure.

Book 3–6 months ahead for any summer Alaska sailing. The Fairmont Waterfront’s Alaska Cruise Package (May–October 2026, includes breakfast for two and bell team luggage transfer directly to the terminal) is the standout package for cruisers who want the logistics handled.

July 25, 2026 is the busiest single day of the Vancouver cruise season: five ships expected simultaneously at Canada Place, including Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas, Princess’ Grand Princess, and Holland America’s Koningsdam. Port officials estimate 40,000–50,000 passengers moving through the terminal on peak Friday–Monday weekends. If sailing near this date, book hotel and airport transfers months in advance. There are also nine days in 2026 with four ships: May 23, June 21, July 4, July 5, July 9, July 15, July 23, July 26, and August 22.

The final ship of 2026 season is Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Encore, departing October 13. Canada Place marked its 40th year of operation in 2026 — the Holland America Line’s Noordam was the first ship to dock here on April 28, 1986.

MAY–JUN
VTS Sweet Spots — May & June for Pre-Cruise Vancouver
May is VTS’s top pick for pre-cruise Vancouver: warm (18°C), increasingly dry, long days, cherry blossoms still a recent memory, North Shore peaks snow-capped and spectacular, Stanley Park at its finest, and hotel rates meaningfully below July–August peak. June combines warm temperatures with the most sunshine of the year (9.4 hrs/day) and 16+ hours of daylight — sunset at 9:30 PM by mid-June. Both months are before the absolute peak tourist volumes of July and August. Sailing mid-May or June is also within the core Alaska season for the finest Inside Passage conditions.

JUL–AUG
Peak Summer — Book Hotels 3–6 Months Ahead
July and August are Vancouver’s warmest, driest, and most expensive months. Hotel rates for 4-star downtown properties reach CA$400 (~USD $292)–700+/night. July 25 is the busiest cruise day. Multiple 4- and 5-ship days throughout. Granville Island, Stanley Park, and Capilano are at maximum visitor volumes. On the positive side: Alaska weather is also at its warmest and driest, wildlife is most active, and the sailaway from Vancouver at 9 PM sunset in July is extraordinary. Book hotels and the Capilano Suspension Bridge well in advance. Consider shoulder months (May, June, September) for a less crowded pre-cruise city experience.

SEP
September — Best Value Month of the Alaska Season
September is VTS’s best value recommendation for the Alaska cruise season from Vancouver: still warm (18°C), crowd levels dropping noticeably from August, hotel rates falling, autumn colours beginning on the North Shore mountains, and the Inside Passage still in excellent condition for Alaska wildlife (whales, bears before hibernation, bald eagles at their most active). The season runs through October 13. September sailings represent the best combination of good weather, reasonable hotel rates, and manageable city crowds.

Common Questions
Vancouver (Canada Place) Cruise Port — FAQ
The eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is required for visa-exempt foreign nationals who fly into Canada — but not for US citizens. US citizens need only a valid passport for sea entry into Canada. Non-US nationals from visa-exempt countries (UK, Australia, EU, etc.) must apply for an eTA at eta.gc.ca before flying to Vancouver — it is linked to your passport and typically approved within minutes. Apply well before your travel date. If you are arriving in Vancouver by land (driving from the US), the eTA is not required. All passengers on Alaska sailings need a valid passport regardless of nationality — Alaska is an international voyage.
The Canada Line SkyTrain is the definitive answer: from YVR Level 3, take the Canada Line northbound to Waterfront Station (~25 minutes, every 4–6 minutes). Exit Waterfront Station and walk 5 minutes west — the five white sails of Canada Place are visible from the station exit. The fare is CA$4.55 (~USD $3.32) daytime or CA$9.55 (~USD $6.97) after 6:30 PM (the YVR AddFare applies to trips starting at YVR after 6:30 PM). Tap your contactless credit or debit card at the barrier — no ticket purchase needed. Taxi alternative: flat zone fare ~CA$36 (~USD $26)–46. Return trips from Canada Place to YVR are metered (higher than the flat inbound fare).
Royal Caribbean uses the Ballantyne Cruise Terminal at 1 Centennial Road, Vancouver — approximately 1 km east of Canada Place. The two terminals are in completely different locations and are not walkable between each other with luggage. If you are sailing Royal Caribbean (Ovation of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas), always give your taxi driver or GPS “Ballantyne Cruise Terminal, 1 Centennial Road, Vancouver.” From the SkyTrain: exit Waterfront Station and take a short taxi or Uber (~CA$8 (~USD $5.84)–12) to Ballantyne. All other major Alaska cruise lines (HAL, Princess, Celebrity, Norwegian, Disney, Silversea) use Canada Place at 999 Canada Place.
For Holland America Line, boarding officially begins at noon and passengers are asked to arrive no earlier than 20 minutes before their assigned check-in time. Other cruise lines follow similar staggered window systems. Cruise line-organised airport transfers from YVR run from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Most Alaska 7-night sailings depart at 4:00–5:00 PM, giving passengers a full morning in Vancouver before boarding. Staterooms are typically accessible by approximately 1:30 PM. Check your cruise line’s app for your specific assigned boarding window — arriving before your window may result in being asked to wait.
Vancouver uses Canadian dollars (CAD). Credit cards are universally accepted throughout the city — Visa, Mastercard, and Amex at virtually every restaurant, shop, attraction, and taxi. USD is accepted at many tourist-facing businesses but at unfavourable exchange rates (typically 10–15% below the actual exchange rate). Use a credit card with no foreign transaction fee for the best rate. For cash: ATMs throughout downtown dispense CAD. The SkyTrain accepts contactless credit and debit cards at the barriers — no need to purchase tickets or obtain a Compass Card for a one-day visit, though a reloadable Compass Card saves money over multiple transit trips.
Two nights before sailing is the VTS minimum recommendation — arriving the evening before gives you one full day in the city before embarkation. Three nights is better, and genuinely rewarding: Stanley Park, Granville Island, Gastown, and one North Shore excursion (Capilano and/or Grouse Mountain) fill three days naturally. Flying in the same day as embarkation is possible via the Canada Line SkyTrain (25 minutes from YVR to Waterfront Station, steps from Canada Place) but adds risk if your flight is delayed and removes one of the finest pre-cruise city experiences available anywhere in the world. Vancouver deserves time.
Yes, if you are visiting for the first time — Capilano is one of BC’s top experiences and the combination of the bridge, Treetops Adventure, and Cliffwalk is genuinely excellent. Admission is approximately CA$62 (~USD $45)/adult (book at capbridge.com; high season sells out 42 days ahead on average). However: Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver is entirely free, has the same dramatic canyon-and-rainforest setting, and is far less crowded. If budget matters, Lynn Canyon is an outstanding free alternative. If you want the full Capilano experience plus a North Shore day including Grouse Mountain, allow a full day and book Capilano in advance.
