The Cradle of Liberty — Gateway to New England
Flynn Cruiseport Boston — Fall Foliage, History & the Atlantic

Boston is the finest pre-cruise city on the East Coast for passengers sailing Canada & New England fall foliage itineraries — and one of the most historically significant cities in the United States for any passenger arriving with a day or two to spare. The Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile red-brick path connecting 16 sites of the American Revolution, runs through the city from Boston Common to the Bunker Hill Monument. The Old North Church, where Paul Revere received the lantern signal that launched his midnight ride, still stands on Salem Street in the North End. The USS Constitution — the oldest commissioned warship in the US Navy, launched in 1797 — is moored at the Charlestown Navy Yard, visible from the harbour. Fenway Park, opened in 1912, is the oldest Major League Baseball stadium still in use. Boston has more history per square mile than any other American city, and it all sits within 2–3 miles of the cruise terminal.

The Flynn Cruiseport Boston (formally the Raymond L. Flynn Black Falcon Cruise Terminal) is operated by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) at 1 Black Falcon Avenue in the South Boston Seaport District — the city’s most rapidly developed waterfront neighbourhood. The terminal is 3 miles from Logan Airport (one of the shortest airport-to-cruise-terminal distances in US cruising), 2 miles from downtown Boston and the Freedom Trail, and served by the Silver Line public transit bus directly from the airport and from South Station. In 2024, Flynn Cruiseport recorded 169 booked berthings from 24 cruise companies, a 15% increase over 2023. The August–October Canada & New England fall foliage sailings are the premier Boston cruise season — ships departing Boston in September and October sail up the Maine coast, through the Maritimes, and into the St. Lawrence as the autumn colour moves across the landscape.

“The ship moves out of Boston Harbor past the islands and into Massachusetts Bay, and the city that launched the American Revolution is behind you. The Maine coast is ahead. In October, the trees on the hillsides above the harbour are beginning to turn. The Canada & New England foliage cruise from Boston is one of the finest itineraries in North American cruising.”
ⓘ 2026 Update: New $3 (USD)/Passenger Arrival Fee at Flynn Cruiseport
Massport approved a $3 (USD) per passenger arrival fee effective 2026, which will increase by $3 (USD) annually, reaching $15 (USD) per passenger by 2030. Revenue is earmarked for terminal improvements: shore power infrastructure (reducing vessel emissions while docked), a new passenger boarding bridge, expanded terminal reception area, and increased seating capacity. The fee is charged to cruise lines and typically passed through to passengers as a port charge in cruise fares — it will appear in your fare breakdown or onboard account. This infrastructure investment is intended to modernise Flynn Cruiseport for the next decade of growth.

🍂 The Canada & New England Foliage Cruise — Boston’s Signature Itinerary
The Canada & New England fall foliage cruise from Boston is one of the finest itineraries in North American cruising. Ships departing Boston in September and October stop at Bar Harbor, Maine (Acadia National Park, one of the most visited national parks in the US, with the carriage roads and summit of Cadillac Mountain turning gold and red in October); Saint John, New Brunswick (the Bay of Fundy, with the highest tides in the world — up to 16 metres of vertical difference between high and low tide — and the Reversing Falls where the river reverses direction with each tide); Halifax, Nova Scotia (the Citadel Hill fortification, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, and the Peggy’s Cove lighthouse an hour’s drive away); Sydney, Nova Scotia and the Cabot Trail; and often Québec City before the turnaround or onward to Montréal. This is why passengers book Boston sailings in August and September many months in advance. The foliage peaks on the Canada/New England route from mid-September (Maine) through mid-October (Québec), and the ships sail directly through the peak colour window.

Ships & Lines
2025–2026 Boston Fleet — Premium, Luxury & Expedition Operators

Flynn Cruiseport Boston attracts a notably premium and diverse mix of cruise operators. Norwegian Cruise Line has the largest Boston homeport presence; Celebrity Cruises and Holland America are VTS affiliate lines operating seasonal sailings. Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 calls Boston on transatlantic crossings. The port’s Canada & New England and transatlantic itineraries draw primarily premium, upper-premium, and luxury lines rather than mass-market megaships — the itinerary itself selects for passengers who prioritise destination over onboard entertainment.

★ VTS Perspective

Boston is the cruise port where the pre-cruise city competes most directly with the itinerary on merit — and the itinerary from Boston is itself among the finest in North American cruising. The Freedom Trail is 2.5 miles of American history that takes three to four hours and covers ground where the United States was literally invented. The lobster rolls are outstanding and are the correct final meal before boarding. Fenway Park at night is one of the great American sports experiences if the Red Sox are playing. The harbour islands are accessible by ferry and are worth an afternoon. And the Canada & New England fall foliage sailing from Boston in October — up the Maine coast past Acadia, into the Bay of Fundy at Saint John, through Halifax, and onward to Québec City as the maples turn — is a genuinely extraordinary itinerary that rewards the pre-cruise Boston investment entirely. Arrive two nights before sailing. Walk the Freedom Trail in the morning. Have a lobster roll at lunchtime. Stand at the Old North Church in the afternoon and think about what happened here in 1775. The ship will be ready when you are.

Climate & Packing
Monthly Weather — Boston, Massachusetts

Boston has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons and a coastal influence from Massachusetts Bay that moderates extremes compared to more inland New England cities. The cruise season runs May through November, with peak season August through October driven by Canada & New England fall foliage itineraries. September and October are the VTS recommended months for a Boston pre-cruise stay: September offers sparkling, dry, warm days (“a month of sparkling days and pleasant nights” as Boston weather guides consistently describe it), while October brings peak fall foliage colour in Greater Boston, the Charles River Esplanade and Public Garden blazing with colour, and the crisp, clear days that define New England autumn. Boston weather changes quickly and layering is always recommended — a clear October morning of 50°F can warm to 65°F by afternoon, and the harbour breeze adds a wind chill factor in any season. The pre-cruise Canada & New England itinerary context matters: ships departing Boston in September and October sail directly into the peak foliage season on the Maine coast, Maritime provinces, and St. Lawrence Valley.

🍂
New England Fall Foliage — The Defining Boston Cruise Season
The Canada & New England fall foliage cruise season from Boston (late August through October) is the most popular cruise season at Flynn Cruiseport, with sailings booking out months in advance. The foliage timing from Boston: Maine coast (Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor) typically peaks mid-September to mid-October. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick peak mid-to-late October. Québec (Quebec City, Saguenay) peaks early-to-mid October. Ships departing Boston in late September to mid-October sail through the peak colour window on the entire route. Greater Boston itself reaches peak foliage in mid-to-late October: the Boston Public Garden, Commonwealth Avenue Mall, the Charles River Esplanade, and the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain (one of the finest urban arboreta in North America) all offer extraordinary autumn colour accessible from the cruise terminal by public transit. A pre-cruise October stay in Boston combines the finest urban foliage experience with the finest foliage sailing itinerary in US cruising — the colour follows you from the city onto the ship.

★ September & October — Why VTS Recommends These Months Above All
September in Boston is among the finest urban pre-cruise weather experiences in the eastern United States: warm without being hot, dry without being parched, sunny without being glaring, and perfectly timed for the Freedom Trail’s outdoor walking culture. The city describes its September weather consistently as “sparkling days and pleasant nights” — this is accurate. The humidity that makes July and August uncomfortable on a 2.5-mile walking trail has retreated. The summer tourist crowds are thinning after Labor Day. Hotel rates begin to ease from their peak. And the Canada & New England foliage sailings are at their most popular — a September departure from Boston means arriving in Bar Harbor and Acadia as the maples begin to turn, reaching Halifax in full autumn colour, and sailing the St. Lawrence through the peak of the Québec palette. October extends the foliage into the city itself: the Boston Public Garden reaches peak colour mid-October, the orange and red canopy above the Commonwealth Avenue Mall is extraordinary, and the Red Sox are potentially in the playoffs. No other combination of pre-cruise city weather and sailing itinerary context in this guide programme is as tightly aligned as Boston in September and October.
What to Pack
Packing for Boston — By Month
🌸 May–June — Season Opening
Light-to-medium layers — May temperature swings are dramatic; a layering system beats any single garment for the Freedom Trail in unpredictable spring weather
Rain jacket — May has 12 rain days average; Boston spring is reliably unreliable; a waterproof shell is essential
Comfortable walking shoes — the Freedom Trail’s brick and cobblestone surfaces (particularly in the North End near the Old North Church) reward proper footwear
Evening jacket or light coat — May evenings average 47°F; a light down or fleece jacket for waterfront dining in the Seaport
☀️ July–August — Summer Peak
Breathable lightweight clothing — cotton and moisture-wicking fabrics for the humidity; July Freedom Trail walks in 82°F heat require breathable layers
High-factor sunscreen — Boston summer sun is strong; the waterfront and harbor islands are exposed; apply before outdoor Freedom Trail tours
Water bottle — stay hydrated on summer walking tours; the Freedom Trail is 2.5 miles in July heat
Light rain jacket or umbrella — afternoon thunderstorms are possible July–August; brief but intense
🍋 September — VTS Top Pick
Light jacket for evenings — September averages 73°F by day but cools to 59°F at night; a light layer for waterfront and Seaport evening dining
Comfortable walking shoes — September is the finest month for the Freedom Trail; the weather is ideal and the brick surface dries quickly after the occasional rain
Light rain jacket — 9 rain days average in September; a compact waterproof shell is sufficient; September rain is brief and the sky often clears quickly
Sunscreen — September sun in Boston is strong; the harbour and waterfront are exposed; apply for afternoon outdoor activities
Camera — September light on the red brick of the Back Bay and Beacon Hill is one of the finest urban photography lights in the eastern US
🍂 October — Foliage Peak
Layering system — October morning temperatures (47°F) and afternoon highs (61°F) require a 3-layer approach: base, mid (fleece or light down), outer shell
Medium-weight jacket or coat — the harbour breeze at the Seaport waterfront in October is significantly cooler than the thermometer suggests; wind chill matters
Scarf and light gloves — for evenings on the waterfront and early morning Freedom Trail starts in October
Rain jacket — October averages 3.9 inches precipitation; a waterproof outer layer doubles as wind protection on the harbour
Camera — October foliage in the Public Garden and along Commonwealth Avenue is one of the finest urban autumn photography opportunities in America
★ VTS Best Time for a Boston Pre-Cruise Stay

September without reservation. The weather is as close to perfect as Boston gets: warm without being hot, dry, sunny, and breezy from the harbour. The Freedom Trail is at its most enjoyable in these conditions — two and a half miles of American history in ideal walking weather. The Canada & New England foliage sailings that depart Boston in September sail directly into the peak colour window on the Maine coast and Maritime provinces. October extends this with the city’s own foliage peak — the Public Garden’s willows turn gold over the Swan Boats, Commonwealth Avenue’s elm canopy becomes a cathedral of orange and yellow, and the Red Sox may still be playing. Dress for layers in October (morning 47°F, afternoon 61°F, harbour breeze significant). July and August are manageable with lighter clothing and a preference for morning activities, but the humidity and crowd levels on the Freedom Trail make them less ideal for extended outdoor exploration. May and June are pleasant but unpredictable. November closes the season with increasingly cold temperatures and diminishing returns from the foliage. For Boston: September and October are the answer to every pre-cruise timing question.

10–20 min · The Seaport District · Free
Free if staying in the Seaport District
⏱ 10–20 min walk depending on hotel · Flat waterfront route · Paved and well-signed
The South Boston Seaport District is immediately adjacent to Flynn Cruiseport, and several Seaport hotels are within reasonable walking distance of the terminal. From the Yotel Boston, the Westin Boston Seaport, the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport, or the Aloft Boston Seaport, the terminal is 10–20 minutes on foot along the waterfront. The route follows Design Center Place and Black Falcon Avenue — flat, paved, and signed. Practical for passengers with 1–2 pieces of luggage; use a taxi or Uber if you have more than you can comfortably roll for 15 minutes.
Best for: Seaport hotel guests · 1–2 bags · pre-cruise walk along the waterfront
★ The Boston Airport Advantage — 3 Miles, 10–15 Minutes, ~$18 (USD)
No US cruise port in this guide programme offers a more convenient airport connection than Flynn Cruiseport Boston. Baltimore’s BWI is 10 miles from its terminal; New Orleans’ MSY is 16 miles; even Miami International is 8 miles from Port of Miami. Logan Airport at 3 miles from 1 Black Falcon Avenue is essentially adjacent to the cruise port. A typical Uber at $18 (USD) and 12 minutes is the most affordable and fastest major-airport cruise-terminal transfer in this guide. For passengers arriving by air: BOS is not just convenient — it is exceptional. Fly into BOS. Take the short Uber. The pre-cruise Boston stay begins immediately.
★ VTS Transport Recommendation

Fly into BOS the day before sailing. Take the Uber or Lyft to your downtown Boston or Seaport hotel (~$15 (USD)–$22, (USD) 10–15 min). Walk the Freedom Trail. Have the lobster roll. The next morning, the Silver Line SL2 bus from South Station to Drydock Avenue ($2.40 (USD), 15 min) is the perfect sailing-day commute with manageable luggage, or a $15 (USD) Uber if you have more bags. For passengers driving from New England: follow I-93 to Exit 23, drop luggage at the terminal, park at the EDIC Garage or Massport Fargo lot. For Northeast Corridor train travellers: Amtrak to South Station, then SL2 to Drydock Avenue. The terminal address is 1 Black Falcon Avenue. It is 3 miles from the airport. Boston has done everything possible to make getting to the ship easy. The pre-cruise city is the reason to arrive a day early.

Parking at Flynn Cruiseport Boston
EDIC Garage, Massport Fargo Lot & the Case for Flying Instead

Parking at Flynn Cruiseport Boston is available but meaningfully more complicated than the drive-to ports in this guide (Baltimore, New Orleans) where parking is adjacent and straightforward. The primary on-site option is the EDIC Garage at 12 Drydock Avenue — a 5-story covered facility a short walk from the terminal — with a special cruise passenger rate of approximately $20 (USD)/day. The official Massport parking lot at 93 Fargo Street is the reservation-required alternative with a complimentary shuttle; the cost for a 7-night cruise is $245 (USD) + a $14.09 (USD) service fee. For passengers flying in, Boston’s exceptional airport proximity (3 miles, $18 (USD) Uber) makes the parking question largely irrelevant. For regional New England passengers driving from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, or New Hampshire, parking is worth considering; for passengers from further away, the flight-and-Uber combination is typically simpler and not significantly more expensive when Boston-to-Florida airfare is avoided.

The BOS advantageLogan Airport is 3 miles from the terminal — a $15 (USD)–$22 (USD) Uber · For passengers flying from the mid-Atlantic, South, or Midwest: flying to BOS eliminates parking cost entirely and is often not significantly more expensive than driving and parking from southern New England
The mathNew York passenger flying to BOS (~$80 (USD)–$150 (USD) round-trip JetBlue/Delta) + $18 (USD) Uber = ~$100 (USD)–$170 (USD) total vs driving from NYC (~4 hrs) + $140 (USD)–$260 (USD) parking (7 nights EDIC vs Massport) + gas + tolls · Flying often wins beyond a 2-hour drive
Drive-to candidatesMassachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and southern Maine residents have the strongest case for driving · Boston metro residents in particular should drive: parking at EDIC is far cheaper than flying a short distance
VTS recommendationFor passengers from within ~2 hours of Boston: drive and park at EDIC Garage · For passengers from further away: fly to BOS and Uber to the terminal · The 3-mile airport distance eliminates most of the parking calculus

🚘
Drop Luggage at Terminal Before Parking
At both the EDIC Garage and the Massport Fargo lot: drive to the cruise terminal drop-off area first to let porters collect your checked luggage, then proceed to the parking garage. Do not carry large suitcases from the EDIC Garage to the terminal; the drop-off zone is more convenient for bags.
📄
Massport Fargo Lot: Reserve Online First
The Massport official lot at 93 Fargo Street requires advance online reservation at massport.com/flynn-cruiseport. Select your specific ship and cruise duration. Print or save your booking barcode. Do not arrive expecting walk-up access to the Fargo lot — without a reservation, you will be directed to the EDIC Garage or C1 lot.
🚗
Show Cruise Ticket for EDIC Garage Special Rate
The EDIC Garage at 12 Drydock Avenue offers the ~$20 (USD)/day cruise passenger special rate on presentation of your cruise boarding pass or ticket. Have it accessible in your cruise line app or as a printed document when entering the garage. Without it, you pay the standard (higher) commercial rate.
🚌
Massport Fargo Shuttle: Allow Extra Time
The complimentary shuttle from 93 Fargo Street to the terminal runs every 10–15 minutes on embarkation days. Massport specifically advises: arrive at least 2 hours before ship departure to allow time for the shuttle ride, terminal arrival, and security screening. On disembarkation day, allow time for the shuttle back to Fargo before onward travel.
October Foliage Peak: Book Massport Fargo Early
September and October Canada & New England sailings are the most popular at Flynn Cruiseport. Peak foliage embarkation weekends see maximum parking demand across all lots. If sailing in late September or October, book the Massport Fargo lot early rather than relying on EDIC Garage walk-up availability. The Fargo reservation system guarantees your space regardless of how full the general lots are.
💳
EDIC Garage Payment: Cash, Visa, or Mastercard
The EDIC Garage accepts cash, Visa, and Mastercard. American Express is not universally accepted; confirm before relying on it. Payment is typically at exit on your return day. Keep your parking ticket throughout the cruise; you may need it at exit. The lot is secured and monitored throughout your cruise duration.
★ VTS Parking Recommendation

For Boston metro and southern New England passengers driving to the terminal: park at the EDIC Garage at 12 Drydock Avenue, ~$20 (USD)/day, show your boarding pass for the cruise rate, drop luggage at the terminal first. For passengers who want the guaranteed space with no walk-up risk (particularly for October peak foliage sailings): book the Massport Fargo lot at 93 Fargo Street online in advance, allow time for the shuttle. For anyone from beyond 2 hours drive — New York, Philadelphia, DC, the Midwest, the South — fly to BOS and take the 10-minute, $18 (USD) Uber. The airport proximity is Boston’s greatest logistical advantage for cruise passengers, and it eliminates the parking question entirely for most travellers outside New England.

Embarkation Day
Sailing Day at Boston — Lobster Roll, the Freedom Trail & Into Massachusetts Bay

Embarkation day in Boston rewards an early start. Most sailings depart in the late afternoon or early evening, which means the entire morning and early afternoon are available for a final loop of the Freedom Trail, a lobster roll at one of the Seaport or North End restaurants, or a walk along the Charles River Esplanade as the autumn colour builds. The important sailing-day logistics: security screening at Flynn Cruiseport begins at 10:30 AM but boarding typically does not start until noon — Massport specifically advises passengers to adhere to their pre-assigned boarding time in the cruise line app. The terminal has no food or beverage service — eat before you arrive. Both driving passengers (EDIC Garage, drop luggage at terminal first) and flying passengers ($18 (USD) Uber from Logan, 10 minutes) arrive at the same terminal on 1 Black Falcon Avenue. The ship is visible from the waterfront area before you reach the terminal entrance.

⚠ No Food or Beverages at Flynn Cruiseport — Plan Accordingly
Flynn Cruiseport Boston has no food or beverage service inside the terminal. There are no cafes, restaurants, vending machines, or refreshment stands. Eat before you arrive. The Seaport District, just minutes from the terminal, has excellent options including Row 34 (exceptional raw bar and seafood), Pastoral Artisan Pizza, and multiple grab-and-go options along Seaport Boulevard. If you’re arriving from downtown, have your lobster roll at lunchtime and arrive at the terminal comfortably full. This is the most important practical note in this block for Boston passengers.

Documents & Essentials for Sailing Day
📌 Required — Every Passenger
Valid passport strongly recommended for all sailings including Canada & New England · Required if you miss the ship in a Canadian port and must fly home · Closed-loop US domestic alternative (passport card or ID + birth certificate) is possible for some sailings but passport is always the better choice
Boarding pass in cruise line app (downloaded offline) and printed backup · Adhere to your pre-assigned boarding group time · Flynn Cruiseport processes passengers by assigned boarding time; arriving significantly early does not guarantee early boarding
Credit card for onboard account · Physical card · Authorisation hold placed at check-in · Know your available credit
Luggage tags · Printed and attached before leaving hotel · Porters at terminal collect and tag bags for cabin delivery
📱 App & Pre-Departure
Cruise line app check-in complete at home · NCL app · Celebrity app · HAL Navigator · All require pre-boarding online check-in — do not wait until the terminal
Boarding pass downloaded offline · Terminal Wi-Fi may be slow on peak foliage-season embarkation days with multiple ships loading simultaneously
Boarding group time noted · Flynn Cruiseport runs zone/group boarding strictly · Arriving at your assigned time rather than as early as possible is genuinely faster
Shore excursions pre-booked · Bar Harbor/Acadia carriage road tours, Saint John Bay of Fundy tours, and Halifax Peggy’s Cove excursions all fill months ahead · Pre-book via Viator or GetYourGuide for significant savings vs. ship desk
Terminal address: 1 Black Falcon Avenue, South Boston, MA 02210 · Saved in phone GPS · Rideshare driver has the address
🍰 Cabin Bag — Sailing Day Essentials
All medications · Checked bags arrive at cabin 2–4 hours after boarding · Keep prescriptions and anything needed immediately in your carry-on
Snacks and water · No food at the terminal · If your boarding time is early afternoon, a snack prevents a hungry wait between hotel checkout and the ship’s buffet opening
Camera or fully charged phone · The Boston Harbor departure offers the downtown skyline, the harbour islands, the Bunker Hill Monument visible in Charlestown, and the open Atlantic ahead · Have it accessible before the ship clears the dock
Light jacket or layer · The harbour breeze on the open deck as the ship moves into Massachusetts Bay is significantly cooler than it feels on shore · Even in September, have a layer accessible for the departure
Embarkation Day Timeline
Hotel to Onboard — The Boston Sailing Morning
1
Morning — Final Boston Hours
Final Freedom Trail Stop · North End Breakfast · Harbour Walk
With most sailings departing late afternoon, you have the entire morning in one of America’s finest walking cities. If you stayed in the Beacon Hill or Back Bay area, a morning walk through the Boston Public Garden (in October, the willows are gold above the Swan Boat pond; in September the late-summer green is giving way to the first hints of autumn) and along the Charles River Esplanade is among the finest urban morning walks on the East Coast. If you’re in the North End (the Italian neighbourhood adjacent to the Freedom Trail’s Copp’s Hill and Paul Revere House): a pastry at Mike’s Pastry or Modern Pastry on Hanover Street, two legendary rival cannoli shops within a block of each other. The North End smells of espresso and fresh-baked bread at 9 AM and is the finest neighbourhood morning in Boston.
2
Late Morning — The Lobster Roll
The Final Meal Before the Atlantic — Because Your Ship Does Not Have This
The Maine and Massachusetts lobster roll is the defining pre-cruise meal at the Boston homeport — cold-water North Atlantic lobster claw and knuckle meat, lightly dressed in mayonnaise (Connecticut-style) or simply with butter and lemon (Maine-style), in a split-top hot dog bun. Row 34 (383 Congress St, Fort Point, near the Seaport — 10 min walk from terminal) is the VTS recommendation: an exceptional oyster bar and seafood restaurant with one of the finest lobster rolls in the city. Neptune Oyster (63 Salem St, North End) is the gold standard in the city if you’re starting from the North End side. James Hook & Co. (15 Northern Ave, near South Station and the terminal area) is a waterfront lobster shack selling live and cooked lobster with the simplest, most authentic approach. Your ship has lobster. It is not this. Eat the Boston lobster roll before boarding.
3
Early Afternoon — Terminal Transfer
Uber or Silver Line to 1 Black Falcon Avenue · Arrive at Your Boarding Group Time
From the Seaport District: 10–20 minute walk along the waterfront to the terminal, or a short Uber ($8 (USD)–$12 (USD)). From downtown/Back Bay: Silver Line SL2 from South Station to Drydock Avenue ($2.40 (USD), 15 min) or Uber ($12 (USD)–$18 (USD)). From Logan Airport (last-minute arrivals): Uber $15 (USD)–$22, (USD) 10–15 min — one of the most forgiving airport–terminal logistic situations in US cruising. If driving: drop your party and luggage at the terminal drop-off zone first, then park at the EDIC Garage (12 Drydock Ave, show boarding pass for cruise rate ~$20 (USD)/day). Arrive at your pre-assigned boarding group time, not as early as possible — Flynn Cruiseport processes boarding groups sequentially and arriving early means waiting in the terminal (with no food available) rather than faster boarding.
4
At the Terminal — Check-In
Security from 10:30 AM · Boarding from Noon · App Boarding Pass & Printed Backup
Flynn Cruiseport is a modern facility with efficient processing — porters collect checked luggage at the terminal entrance (tip $1 (USD)–$2 (USD) per bag), security screening opens at 10:30 AM, and boarding typically begins around noon. Have your boarding documents ready: cruise line app boarding pass (downloaded offline) and a printed backup, passport or ID, and credit card. No food or beverages are available inside the terminal — bring a snack in your cabin bag if you’ll be waiting. The terminal has Wi-Fi, seating, and restrooms. Most cruise lines at Boston use zone boarding with pre-assigned times; following your assigned time rather than arriving at 10:30 AM and waiting is the most efficient approach.
5
Aboard — Afternoon
Shore Excursion Desk · Safety Muster · Specialty Dining
Once aboard: find your cabin, confirm checked luggage timing (2–4 hours after boarding is normal), complete your safety muster (many lines now allow muster completion via app before or immediately after boarding — do it immediately), and visit the shore excursion desk. The most important booking to make at the shore excursion desk (or pre-booked via Viator): Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park on Canada & New England itineraries fills first — the carriage road bike tours and the summit bus to Cadillac Mountain are the two most popular excursions on the entire itinerary. If you haven’t pre-booked, go to the desk immediately. Also book specialty dining reservations for night two or three — prime-time slots fill on embarkation day.
Departure — Boston Harbor & Massachusetts Bay
Be on Deck. The Harbour Islands Open Ahead. The Maine Coast Is Tomorrow.
As the ship moves away from Black Falcon Avenue and into Boston Harbor, go to the deck facing the city. The downtown Boston skyline — the Custom House Tower, the Hancock Tower’s blue glass, the gold dome of the State House on Beacon Hill — recedes on the port side. Ahead to port: the Boston Harbor Islands, a 34-island state park scattered across the harbour, some with Civil War fortifications, some with lighthouses. The Graves lighthouse (the outermost of the harbour lights, 1905) marks the entrance to Massachusetts Bay. As the ship clears the outer harbour and Massachusetts Bay opens: to the north, the shoreline of the North Shore and Cape Ann. Ahead, the open Atlantic. By morning: the Maine coast. If it is September, the air is clear and the sky is that particular New England blue that exists only in early autumn. If it is October, the first hints of colour are on the islands as you pass. The Canada & New England fall foliage sailing from Boston is the reason the ship is full. Be on deck to understand why.

Disembarkation
Returning to Boston After Your Sailing
Disembarkation timeTypically 7:00–11:00 AM · Colour-coded or deck groups · Self-disembarkation (carry all bags) is earliest · Checked bag collection slightly later at terminal
US Customs & Border ProtectionCBP processes all passengers at the terminal on return from Canada · Have passport or ID ready · Customs declaration form completed night before · US citizens typically faster · Global Entry may be available — confirm with cruise line
To Logan Airport (BOS)Uber/Lyft ~$15 (USD)–$22 (USD) · 10–15 min · Or Silver Line SL2 from Drydock Ave to South Station, then SL1 free to Logan · Allow minimum 2.5 hours from ship arrival to international departure gate · 2 hours for domestic flights
To downtown BostonSilver Line SL2 from Drydock Ave to South Station (~$2.40 (USD), ~15 min) · Uber/Lyft ~$12 (USD)–$18 (USD) · Most Back Bay and Beacon Hill hotels 15–20 min by transit
Post-cruise stayBoston strongly rewards 1–2 extra days post-cruise · Anything not covered pre-cruise: Cambridge and Harvard, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Seaport · A post-cruise October stay in Boston, with the foliage at its peak after you’ve seen it building on the route, is a remarkable full-circle experience
MBTA connectionsSouth Station is the MBTA hub for Amtrak (to New York, Providence, Washington DC), MBTA commuter rail (to all Massachusetts regional destinations), Red Line subway, Silver Line, and bus · A post-cruise train from South Station to Providence ($12, (USD) 40 min) or New York Penn Station (~$80 (USD)–$120, (USD) 4 hrs on Acela) is a relaxed way to continue south
★ VTS Embark Day Recommendation

North End cannoli in the morning at Mike’s Pastry on Hanover Street. Walk the last section of the Freedom Trail — through Copp’s Hill Burying Ground and past the Old North Church once more — if you haven’t done it already. Lobster roll at Row 34 at the Seaport or Neptune Oyster in the North End for lunch. Silver Line or short Uber to 1 Black Falcon Avenue at your assigned boarding time — not before. Have your app boarding pass offline. Remember that the terminal has no food. Board. Book Acadia excursions at the shore desk immediately if you haven’t already. Then be on deck as the ship moves into Boston Harbor. The Custom House Tower. The State House dome. The harbour islands. The Graves lighthouse. Massachusetts Bay opening. The air in September is clear and blue. The Maine coast is ahead. The leaves are just beginning. The ship knows where it is going. So do you.

The Cradle of Liberty
Explore Boston — The Freedom Trail, Lobster Rolls & the City That Launched a Revolution

Boston is the most historically consequential pre-cruise city in the United States. Within 3 miles of the Flynn Cruiseport terminal, you can stand in the Old State House where the Declaration of Independence was first read to Boston citizens in 1776, walk across the ground where the Boston Massacre occurred in 1770, see the Old North Church where Paul Revere arranged the lantern signal that triggered his midnight ride in 1775, and visit Faneuil Hall where the Sons of Liberty organised the resistance to British taxation. The Freedom Trail connects all 16 of these sites in a 2.5-mile red-brick path that takes 3–4 hours at a leisurely pace. It is the finest single walking experience in American history available within a short rideshare of any US cruise terminal. The combination of the Freedom Trail, a North End Italian lunch, a lobster roll somewhere on the waterfront, and an evening at Fenway Park — if the Red Sox are playing — constitutes the finest two-day pre-cruise programme available at any homeport in this guide.

⏰ Two Perfect Days Before Your Sailing — VTS Itinerary
Assumes 2 nights before sailing. Ship departs late afternoon Day 2.
DAY 1 AM
The Freedom Trail — America’s Finest Walking History Tour — Begin at the Boston Common (the oldest public park in the United States, established 1634, the trail starting point) and follow the red brick line through the heart of Boston. Key stops: the Massachusetts State House (gold dome, visible from across the harbour), Park Street Church, the Granary Burying Ground (Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and the victims of the Boston Massacre are all buried here), the Old South Meeting House (where the Boston Tea Party was planned in 1773 and 5,000 colonists met to organise the resistance), the Old State House (1713, the oldest surviving public building in Boston, where the Declaration of Independence was first read publicly in Massachusetts), the Boston Massacre site (marked by a cobblestone circle in the street outside), and Faneuil Hall (the “Cradle of Liberty”). Allow 3–4 hours for the full trail to the Charlestown Navy Yard.
DAY 1 PM
North End Lunch & the USS Constitution — The Freedom Trail ends in the North End, Boston’s Italian neighbourhood. Have lunch at a North End restaurant — Neptune Oyster (63 Salem St) for the lobster roll, or any of the Italian trattorias on Hanover and Salem streets. Then cross the Charlestown Bridge on foot to the Charlestown Navy Yard to visit the USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”), the oldest commissioned warship in the US Navy, launched in 1797, fought in the War of 1812, and still technically active in the US Navy. Free admission (small charge for the adjacent museum). The view of the Boston skyline from the Navy Yard, with the Bunker Hill Monument rising above, is one of the finest the city offers.
DAY 1 EVE
Fenway Park or Back Bay Dinner — If the Red Sox are playing a home game: go to Fenway Park. Opened in 1912, the oldest Major League Baseball stadium in use, with the Green Monster left-field wall and an atmosphere unique in American sport. Standing room tickets are often available day-of. The neighbourhood around Fenway (Kenmore Square) is excellent for pre-game bars and restaurants. If no game: Back Bay dinner on Newbury Street (the finest restaurant and boutique street in Boston, running parallel to Commonwealth Avenue) or the Seaport District’s excellent restaurant scene (Row 34, Legal Sea Foods, Pastoral Artisan).
DAY 2 AM
Boston Public Garden & Beacon Hill — The Most Beautiful Urban Morning Walk in New England — Walk through the Boston Public Garden (adjacent to Boston Common — the first public botanical garden in the United States, 1837, with the famous Swan Boats on the pond and, in October, extraordinary fall foliage). Continue into Beacon Hill — the Federal-period neighbourhood of red-brick townhouses, gas lamp-lit streets, and hidden gardens that is the most beautiful residential neighbourhood in Boston. Walk Charles Street (the main commercial street), climb Louisburg Square, walk along Acorn Street (the most photographed street in America). Then a coffee at one of the Charles Street cafés before heading to the North End for morning pastry at Mike’s Pastry or Modern Pastry on Hanover Street.
DAY 2 PM
Lobster Roll Lunch · Board Your Ship — A final lobster roll at Row 34 in the Seaport (10 minutes walk from the terminal) or James Hook & Co. on Northern Avenue (near the terminal area). Then Silver Line or short Uber to 1 Black Falcon Avenue at your boarding group time. Board. Book the Acadia excursion at the ship desk immediately. Be on deck as the ship moves into Boston Harbor. The State House dome on Beacon Hill is visible above the rooftops as the city recedes. The harbour islands are ahead. The Maine coast is tomorrow morning. The leaves are just starting.

The Green Monster (left-field wall, 37 feet tall), the intimate scale (37,755 capacity), the manual scoreboard operated by people inside the wall, and the density of history (Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, David Ortiz) make a Red Sox game at Fenway unlike any other stadium experience in American sport. Standing room tickets are often available day-of on the MLB app. The baseball season runs April–October, aligning with the cruise season. If the Red Sox are playing the night before your sailing, this is the correct evening activity.
$30 (USD)–$200 (USD)+ for seats · Standing room often available day-of · 4 Jersey St, Fenway · ~30 min transit from terminal · mlb.com/redsox
USS Constitution — Old Ironsides
Free Admission · Charlestown Navy Yard · Oldest Commissioned US Warship
The USS Constitution, launched October 21, 1797, is the oldest commissioned warship in the United States Navy — technically still active, with a rotating crew of active-duty Navy sailors. She earned the nickname “Old Ironsides” during the War of 1812 when British cannonballs were observed bouncing off her oak hull. Free boarding and guided tours by active-duty sailors make this one of the finest free historical experiences in Boston. The Charlestown Navy Yard site also offers views of the downtown skyline and the Bunker Hill Monument. The adjacent USS Constitution Museum ($12 (USD) recommended donation) provides excellent context. The Constitution is at the end of the Freedom Trail — combine them in one morning.
Free · Charlestown Navy Yard, 1 Constitution Ave · End of Freedom Trail · ussconstitutionmuseum.org · Allow 1–1.5 hrs

Boston Harbor Islands
Ferry from Long Wharf · $30 (USD) Adults · 34-Island State Park
The Boston Harbor Islands State Park — 34 islands in Boston Harbor, accessible by ferry from Long Wharf (near the Aquarium) — offers Civil War fortifications, lighthouses, swimming beaches, hiking, and some of the finest views of the Boston skyline available from water level. Georges Island (Civil War-era Fort Warren) and Spectacle Island (swimming beaches with skyline views) are the most visited. The same harbour your ship will depart through. A September or October afternoon on Spectacle Island, with the Boston skyline reflecting in the harbour and the first autumn colour on the mainland hills beyond, is one of the finest pre-cruise afternoon experiences in this guide. Ferry from Long Wharf, approximately 30 minutes. Seasonal: May–October.
~$30 (USD) round-trip ferry (adults) · Long Wharf, Atlantic Ave · May–Oct · bostonharborislands.org · Allow half-day

Boston Public Garden & Beacon Hill
Free · Most Beautiful Urban Walk in New England · October Foliage
The Boston Public Garden (America’s first public botanical garden, established 1837) and adjacent Boston Common form the green heart of the city. The Swan Boats on the lagoon (seasonal, April–September), the Make Way for Ducklings sculptures, and the 19th-century iron bridge are all in the Public Garden. In October: the willows turning gold, the maples blazing red and orange, and the Commonwealth Avenue elm canopy creating a cathedral of autumn colour that rivals anything in New England. Adjacent Beacon Hill — Federal-period red-brick townhouses, gas lamps, and Acorn Street (most photographed street in America) — is the most beautiful residential neighbourhood in the city. Allow 2 hours for both.
Free · Public Garden: Arlington St entrance · Beacon Hill: 10 min walk from Public Garden · Allow 2 hrs · Peak October foliage mid-month
🐠
New England Aquarium
$34 (USD) Adults · Central Wharf · Giant Ocean Tank · Whale Watching
The New England Aquarium on Central Wharf (1 Central Wharf, directly on the waterfront, ~1 mile from the cruise terminal) is one of the finest aquariums in the United States. The centrepiece is the Giant Ocean Tank — a 200,000-gallon cylindrical tank housing a Caribbean coral reef ecosystem with sharks, sea turtles, moray eels, and hundreds of tropical fish, viewable through multiple floors of the building. The penguin colony on the main floor is one of the largest in the US. The Aquarium also operates whale watching boats from the adjacent dock — the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary off Provincetown has one of the highest concentrations of humpback whales on the East Coast, and the Aquarium’s naturalist-led tours have a near-100% whale sighting rate in season.
$34 (USD) adults · 1 Central Wharf · Whale watching from ~$60 (USD) · Pre-book at neaq.org · Allow 2–3 hrs for aquarium

Cambridge & Harvard
Red Line · 15 min from Downtown · Free to Walk · Harvard Yard
Harvard University, founded 1636, is 15 minutes from downtown Boston on the Red Line to Harvard Station — the oldest university in the United States, with a campus (Harvard Yard) of red-brick and limestone buildings surrounding the oldest college green in America. Free self-guided walks or free student-led tours of the yard (reserve at harvard.edu/visitors). The Harvard Museum of Natural History ($15 (USD)) houses one of the finest natural history collections in the world, including the famous Glass Flowers (3,000 botanically accurate glass models of plants) and the Great Mammal Hall. The MIT campus is one Red Line stop closer to Boston — a completely different architectural experience (concrete modernism vs Harvard’s Colonial and Federalist brick).

Old North Church & North End
VTS Essential · $6 (USD) Adults · Paul Revere · America’s Most Famous Church
The Old North Church (Christ Church in the City of Boston, 193 Salem Street) is America’s most famous church building — the one where, on the night of April 18, 1775, sexton Robert Newman hung two lanterns in the steeple (“one if by land, two if by sea”) to signal Paul Revere that British troops were crossing the Charles River toward Lexington and Concord. The church is the oldest standing church building in Boston (1723) and still holds regular services. A small admission allows access to the interior and the steeple climb. Adjacent: Paul Revere House (19 North Square, $6, (USD) the oldest remaining residential building in downtown Boston, dating to 1680, where Paul Revere lived during the Revolution) and the North End’s Italian restaurant corridor on Hanover Street.
Old North Church $6 (USD) · 193 Salem St, North End · Paul Revere House $6 (USD) · 19 North Square · Both on Freedom Trail · Allow 1 hr
Where to Eat in Boston
Pre-Cruise Dining — Lobster Rolls, Raw Bars & North End Italian
🥹
Neptune Oyster — The Gold Standard Lobster Roll
VTS Essential · North End · Queue Expected · Best Lobster Roll in Boston
Neptune Oyster at 63 Salem Street in the North End is the most celebrated seafood restaurant in Boston and widely considered the gold standard for the New England lobster roll — cold-water Maine and Massachusetts lobster claw and knuckle meat, served either cold with mayonnaise or warm with drawn butter, in a split-top New England hot dog bun. The raw bar is exceptional. No reservations accepted — queue forms outside. The wait (typically 30–60 minutes on weekends) is worth it. At the end of the Freedom Trail in the North End, Neptune is the natural lunch destination after the Paul Revere House and Old North Church. Your ship has lobster. Not this lobster. Eat here before boarding.
£££ · 63 Salem St, North End · Lunch & dinner · No reservations · Queue outside · Worth the wait
🥪
Row 34 — Seaport Oyster Bar & Lobster
VTS Pre-Boarding Pick · 10 Min Walk from Terminal · Excellent Raw Bar
Row 34 at 383 Congress Street in the Fort Point neighbourhood (between downtown and the cruise terminal) is the VTS recommended pre-boarding seafood lunch: an exceptional raw bar with New England oysters, clams, and crab, a perfectly executed lobster roll, excellent craft beer selection, and a full seafood menu in a warm industrial-chic space. Reservations accepted (recommended for lunch before sailing day). The location — 10 minutes walk from Flynn Cruiseport — makes it the most practical final meal before boarding. Open for lunch and dinner.

Mike’s Pastry & Modern Pastry — North End Cannoli
VTS Essential · Since 1946 (Mike’s) · Rivals Since Forever · Hanover Street
Two legendary rival cannoli shops occupy competing positions on Hanover Street in the North End — the Italian neighbourhood that has been home to Boston’s Italian-American community since the 19th century. Mike’s Pastry (300 Hanover Street, since 1946) has the longest line and the most varieties; the cannoli shell is crisp and the ricotta filling is sweet and fresh. Modern Pastry (257 Hanover Street) is the quieter, smaller rival with a devoted local following that argues Modern’s shell is crispier and the filling less sweet. Buy one from each. The debate cannot be resolved. Eat them on Hanover Street in the morning before the Freedom Trail. Boston mornings in the North End in September smell of espresso and fresh-baked bread and nothing else.
£ · Mike’s: 300 Hanover St · Modern: 257 Hanover St · Both North End · Morning and afternoon · ~$5 (USD) per cannolo

Legal Sea Foods & Island Creek Oysters
Boston Institution · Multiple Locations · New England Classics
Legal Sea Foods has been the definitive mainstream Boston seafood institution since 1950 — reliable, excellent chowder, consistent lobster preparations, and multiple locations including the Seaport (Harborside Drive) and Prudential Center. For the finest New England clam chowder in a casual setting, Legal Sea Foods is the benchmark. Island Creek Oyster Bar (500 Commonwealth Ave, Fenway) is a more modern approach — the restaurant of Island Creek Oysters, one of the finest oyster farms in Duxbury, Massachusetts, serving their own harvest in multiple preparations. If eating near Fenway before a game, Island Creek is the pre-game dinner.

★ VTS Pre-Cruise Boston Recommendation

Arrive two nights before sailing. Day 1: Freedom Trail in the morning (start at Boston Common, follow the red bricks 2.5 miles through the Old State House, Faneuil Hall, the North End, and the Old North Church — “one if by land, two if by sea” — all the way to the Charlestown Navy Yard and the USS Constitution), North End lunch at Neptune Oyster with the queue accepted as part of the experience, evening at Fenway Park if the Red Sox are playing. Day 2: Boston Public Garden and Beacon Hill in the morning (in October the Public Garden willows are gold and the Commonwealth Avenue elms are blazing — one of the finest urban autumn walks in America), North End pastry at Mike’s on Hanover Street, lobster roll at Row 34 near the terminal for lunch, then board your ship. Be on deck as the ship moves into Boston Harbor. The State House dome. The harbour islands. The Graves lighthouse. Massachusetts Bay. The Maine coast is ahead. The leaves are just turning. The Canada & New England foliage sailing from Boston is why the ship is full. Be on deck. You will understand immediately.

Where to Stay
Pre-Cruise Hotels in Boston — Seaport, Back Bay & Beacon Hill

Boston has excellent hotels in four areas most useful for cruise passengers: the Seaport District (closest to the terminal, 10–20 min walk, most modern hotels), Back Bay (finest location for the Public Garden, Newbury Street, and the Freedom Trail starting point, 15–20 min transit to terminal), Beacon Hill (most atmospheric neighbourhood, boutique properties, 20 min transit), and Downtown/Financial District (near Faneuil Hall, direct Silver Line SL2 to terminal). Book well ahead for peak foliage season (September–October Canada & New England sailings): Boston hotels in this period book out weeks ahead as the city fills with leaf-peeping tourists as well as cruise passengers.

The Westin Boston Seaport is a reliable full-service Marriott Bonvoy property with points redemption and a consistent location for the Seaport walking distance to the terminal. The Yotel Boston on Seaport Boulevard is a more affordable, well-designed mid-range property with compact modern rooms — excellent value for passengers who want to be in the Seaport without full-service hotel pricing. Both are walking distance to the terminal and on the Silver Line SL2 route.
Marriott Custom House & Hilton Boston Downtown

The Hilton Boston Downtown is near Faneuil Hall with Hilton Honors points redemption. Both are excellent choices for passengers who want to be walking distance from Faneuil Hall and the Freedom Trail with direct transit to the terminal on sailing day.

The Beacon Hill Hotel (25 Charles Street) is a smaller, charming boutique on the neighbourhood’s main commercial street. Both are a $16 (USD)–$20 (USD) Uber to the terminal on sailing day — the atmospheric trade-off for walking Boston’s finest neighbourhood.

Boston & Flynn Cruiseport — Key Dates & Cruise Season Calendar
AUG–OCT
🍂
Canada & New England Fall Foliage Season — Peak Booking Period
The August–October Canada & New England fall foliage sailing season is the most popular and most heavily booked period at Flynn Cruiseport Boston. Ships book out months in advance; hotels surge in price throughout Greater Boston. The foliage window from Boston: Maine coast and Acadia peak mid-September to mid-October; Nova Scotia/New Brunswick peak mid-to-late October; Québec early-to-mid October. Greater Boston itself peaks mid-to-late October (Public Garden, Commonwealth Ave, Arnold Arboretum). If your sailing dates fall in this window, book cruise, hotel, and shore excursions simultaneously — particularly Bar Harbor/Acadia carriage road tours, which fill a full season ahead.

Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park — Season April–October
The Red Sox baseball season at Fenway Park (April through October, aligning almost exactly with the cruise season) is one of the finest live sports experiences in North America. Fenway Park, opened 1912, the oldest MLB stadium still in use, with the Green Monster and an intimate atmosphere unlike any other ballpark. Check the Red Sox home schedule at mlb.com/redsox — if a home game falls the night before your sailing, consider building your hotel stay around it. Fenway is 15–20 minutes from the cruise terminal by transit. If the Red Sox are in a playoff run in October (they frequently are), the city atmosphere during foliage sailing season is extraordinary.

250th Anniversary of American Independence — Boston Events
2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence (July 4, 2026) and the American Revolution. Boston, as the city where the Revolution began, will host significant commemorative events throughout 2026: enhanced Freedom Trail programming, Battle of Bunker Hill 250th anniversary events (June 17, 1775 → June 17, 2026), and American Cruise Lines specifically introduced new itineraries for 2026 in observance of the anniversary. The Freedom Trail’s 16 sites will have expanded programming throughout the summer. If your sailing falls in summer 2026, build in extra Freedom Trail time to take advantage of the anniversary programming.

Boston Marathon — Third Monday in April (Patriots’ Day)
The Boston Marathon, held on Patriots’ Day (the third Monday in April), is the world’s oldest annual marathon (since 1897) and one of the great sporting events in American life. The marathon route runs 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to the Boylston Street finish line in Back Bay, passing through Wellesley, Heartbreak Hill in Newton, and Kenmore Square near Fenway Park. The entire Back Bay and Fenway neighbourhood is transformed; hotels throughout the city fill months ahead. Marathon Monday in Boston is extraordinary if you’re there for it. The cruise season typically begins after the marathon, but for very early-season sailings, confirm hotel availability well in advance.

$3 (USD)/Passenger Arrival Fee — New Effective 2026
Massport’s new $3 (USD) per passenger arrival fee became effective in 2026, with the fee increasing by $3 (USD) annually to reach $15 (USD) by 2030. Revenue is dedicated to terminal improvements: shore power infrastructure to reduce emissions while ships are docked (projected 93% reduction in nitrous oxide, 85% in sulfur dioxide, 65% in CO2 from berthed vessels), a new passenger boarding bridge, and expanded terminal reception and seating. The fee is charged to cruise lines and typically passed through to passengers as a port charge in the cruise fare or as a separately itemised port charge on the onboard account.

Cruise Season Opening & Bermuda Season
The Flynn Cruiseport Boston cruise season typically opens in May with Bermuda sailings beginning and the first Canada/New England itineraries. May is an excellent pre-cruise Boston month despite variable weather — tulips and lilacs in the Public Garden, the Freedom Trail without summer crowds, and good hotel value before the summer and foliage peak. Bermuda sailings from Boston (7-night round-trip, stops at Hamilton and Dockyard) are a summer specialty particularly suited to NCL, Celebrity, and Princess. The Bermuda season coincides with the most pleasant Bermuda weather (May–August).

Common Questions
Flynn Cruiseport Boston — FAQ
Logan Airport (BOS) is 3 miles from Flynn Cruiseport Boston — one of the shortest airport-to-cruise-terminal distances in the United States. A typical Uber or Lyft is $15 (USD)–$22 (USD) and 10–15 minutes. Taxis from Logan are $25 (USD)–$35 (USD) (metered). The budget option is the Silver Line: the SL1 bus is free from all Logan terminals to South Station (downtown), then the SL2 bus ($2.40 (USD)) runs from South Station to the Drydock Avenue / Design Center stop near the terminal — total about 30–35 minutes and $2.40 (USD) per person, but impractical with large cruise luggage. For most passengers with standard cruise luggage, the $18 (USD) Uber is the correct choice. Pickup areas at Logan vary by terminal — follow the app’s specific directions carefully, as Logan can be confusing on a first visit.
No. Flynn Cruiseport Boston has no food or beverage service inside the terminal — no cafes, restaurants, or vending machines. Eat before you arrive. The most convenient options: Row 34 (383 Congress Street, Fort Point, 10 minutes walk from the terminal — outstanding lobster roll and raw bar, the VTS recommendation for the final pre-cruise meal); James Hook & Co. (15 Northern Avenue, near South Station, simple waterfront lobster; Neptune Oyster (63 Salem Street, North End, gold standard lobster roll but requires planning and a queue). The Seaport District along Seaport Boulevard has multiple grab-and-go options. Bring a snack in your cabin bag if your boarding group time is early afternoon and you’re likely to be hungry before the ship’s buffet opens.
The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile red-brick walking path connecting 16 historically significant sites of the American Revolution, from Boston Common to the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown. It includes: the Massachusetts State House, Park Street Church, Granary Burying Ground (Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock buried here), Old South Meeting House (where the Boston Tea Party was planned), Old State House (where the Declaration of Independence was first read in Massachusetts), the Boston Massacre site, Faneuil Hall, Paul Revere House, Old North Church (the “one if by land, two if by sea” lanterns), USS Constitution, and Bunker Hill Monument. The walk takes 3–4 hours at a comfortable, stop-everything-and-read pace. Free self-guided with a map from the Boston Common Visitor Center; National Park Service rangers offer free guided walks; private guided tours cost $20 (USD)–$30 (USD). Start at Boston Common — the trail beginning is clearly marked on the ground.
The Canada & New England fall foliage sailing season runs August through October from Boston, with peak demand in September and October. Foliage timing on the sailing route: Maine coast and Acadia typically peak mid-September to mid-October. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick peak mid-to-late October. Québec City and the St. Lawrence peak early-to-mid October. Ships departing Boston in late September through mid-October sail through the peak colour window on the entire route. Book 9–12 months in advance for peak foliage sailings — the most popular Canada/New England departures from Boston sell out a full year ahead. The same advance booking applies to shore excursions: Bar Harbor/Acadia carriage road tours and the Cadillac Mountain summit bus are the most popular excursions on the entire itinerary and sell out months before sailing.
Two main options: (1) EDIC Garage (12 Drydock Avenue, 5-story covered facility across from the terminal): cruise passenger special rate of approximately $20 (USD) per 24-hour period on presentation of your boarding pass; no advance reservation required; walk-up; cash, Visa, or Mastercard. Drop luggage at the terminal first, then park. (2) Massport official lot (93 Fargo Street): $245 (USD) + $14.09 (USD) service fee for a 7-night cruise; advance online booking required at massport.com/flynn-cruiseport; complimentary shuttle every 10–15 minutes. The Massport lot guarantees a space; the EDIC Garage is first-come, first-served. For passengers flying in: Logan is 3 miles away, Uber is $18, (USD) and parking is irrelevant. For regional New England passengers driving: EDIC Garage is the VTS recommendation for simplicity.
The Freedom Trail starts at Boston Common, approximately 2 miles from the cruise terminal. Walking from the terminal to Boston Common takes 35–45 minutes through the Seaport District and the Fort Point Channel neighbourhood — possible and pleasant, but a transit option is faster for most passengers. The best approach: take the Silver Line SL2 bus from the Drydock Avenue stop (right next to the terminal) to South Station downtown ($2.40 (USD), ~15 minutes), then walk 10 minutes to Boston Common and the Freedom Trail starting point at the Visitor Center on Tremont Street. The alternative: Uber/Lyft from the terminal to Boston Common (~$12 (USD)–$15, (USD) 10–15 minutes). The Freedom Trail is then self-guided from Common to Charlestown — 2.5 miles in one direction (the trail is linear, not a loop; most visitors return via MBTA subway/bus or rideshare from Charlestown).
