Gateway to the High Arctic
Tromsø — Where Expeditions Begin

Tromsø sits at 69 degrees north — 350 kilometres above the Arctic Circle — on a small island in the Tromsøysund strait, surrounded by mountains and fjords on every side. It is the largest city in Northern Norway, a genuine university town with a lively café and bar culture, and the undisputed launch point for Arctic expedition cruising. Ships heading north to Svalbard, the polar ice edge, Jan Mayen, and the remote Norwegian coast all depart from or pass through here. For expedition cruise passengers, Tromsø is not just a port — it is the psychological threshold between the familiar world and the Arctic.

The city earns its dramatic reputation twice a year. From late September to late March, the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) appear on clear nights — Tromsø is positioned directly beneath the auroral oval and is one of the best places on earth to see them. From late May to late July, the Midnight Sun provides 24-hour daylight, turning the surrounding fjords and peaks into an otherworldly landscape that never goes dark. Between these two phenomena, the city also offers the Polar Night from mid-November to late January — a period of blue twilight and total darkness that has its own extraordinary character. Whichever season brings you here, Tromsø rewards the decision to arrive a day or two early.

“You board in Tromsø with the feeling that the city has been preparing you for the voyage. By the time the ship clears the harbour, the mountains are already telling you that everything south of here is a different world.”
🏭 Expedition Cruise Authority — VTS Perspective
Tromsø is the single most important port in our expedition cruise coverage. HX Expeditions (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), Silversea, Viking Expeditions, Ponant, Atlas Ocean Voyages, Aurora Expeditions, Oceanwide Expeditions, Quark Expeditions, and Hurtigruten coastal all operate from or through Tromsø. If you are considering an expedition cruise and have not yet decided on a destination, the Svalbard programme departing from Tromsø is our starting recommendation. It is genuinely life-changing and more accessible than most people expect.

Know Your Terminal
Two Docking Locations — Very Different Situations

This is the most important practical fact in this guide. Tromsø has two cruise docking locations on opposite sides of the city. Prostneset is the central pier — you step off the ship and you are already in the city. Breivika is a commercial port 4–5 kilometres to the north — you need a shuttle or bus to reach town. Always confirm which terminal your ship uses before arrival.

VTS noteConfirm shuttle times with your cruise line before sailing day — do not assume the shuttle is running without checking
⚠ Wrong Terminal = Wrong Side of Tromsø
Prostneset and Breivika are not interchangeable. A taxi between them costs approximately 200–300 NOK and takes 13–15 minutes. Always confirm which pier your ship uses in your cruise line’s booking documents or app before arrival. Do not assume based on your cruise line’s typical pattern — ships are reassigned between terminals regularly based on size and scheduling.

★ VTS Perspective

Tromsø is where expedition cruising becomes real. The city has a raw energy that is unlike any other port in this guide programme — it is genuinely remote, genuinely wild, and genuinely beautiful in every season. If you are a first-time expedition cruiser, arriving two days early is not just our recommendation, it is close to mandatory. You need time to adjust to the light (or lack of it), to understand the scale of the landscape, and to absorb the fact that the ship you are about to board is heading somewhere that relatively few people have been. The pre-cruise days in Tromsø are part of the expedition.

Arctic Climate & Light Phenomena
Monthly Weather — Tromsø, Norway (69°N)

Tromsø’s climate is subarctic but tempered by the Gulf Stream — considerably milder than its latitude suggests. The city is wetter than you might expect (over 1,000 mm annually), frequently cloudy, and can change rapidly. What makes Tromsø unique is not just temperature but light: the Polar Night (mid-November to late January), the Midnight Sun (late May to late July), and the Northern Lights season (September through March) each demand a completely different approach to clothing, planning, and expectations.

✨ Northern Lights — Sep to Mar
Aurora Season
The reason many people come. The aurora borealis appears on clear, dark nights when solar activity is sufficient. Tromsø sits directly under the auroral oval — one of the best positions on earth. Cloud cover is the enemy; weather apps and aurora forecast tools (Space Weather Live, Yr.no) are essential. September and October offer a balance of dark skies and manageable temperatures.
★ Polar Night — Nov to Jan
Sun never rises above the horizon. The Polar Night runs from approximately 21 November to 21 January. The sky is not completely dark — you get hours of deep blue twilight around midday — but there is no direct sun. Cold and often snowy. The city’s restaurants, bars, and museums all continue normally. Best aurora conditions of the year for those willing to dress for it.
🌸 Spring — Feb to Apr
Northern Lights + Return of Sun
Magical transition period. Daylight returns rapidly from late January. February still has aurora potential on clear nights. March and April offer improving temperatures, dramatic snowy mountain scenery, and the extraordinary sight of the midnight sun beginning to appear on the horizon. Good fjord and mountain conditions.
☀️ Midnight Sun — May to Jul
24-Hour Daylight
The sun does not set. From approximately 20 May to 22 July, the sun stays above the horizon continuously. Temperatures reach their peak in July (13–14°C average high). The landscape is green and extraordinary. No aurora possible — it is too bright. Peak expedition season to Svalbard departs in this window.

Christmas atmosphere in the city is genuine and warm. Aurora visible most clear nights. Dog sledding, reindeer experiences, and snowmobile tours all running. Not for the unprepared.
What to Pack for Tromsø
Arctic Packing — There Is No Overdressing Here

The most common mistake international visitors make in Tromsø is underpacking. Even in July, temperatures on deck during an expedition sailing in Svalbard waters can be below zero. The layering system is everything: moisture-wicking base layer, insulating mid-layer, windproof and waterproof outer shell. Everything from the outside in should be able to handle wind and rain simultaneously.

❄ Winter (Nov–Mar) — Extreme Cold
Heavyweight down jacket — rated to -20°C
Thermal base layers (top and bottom) · wool preferred
Insulated waterproof trousers
Insulated waterproof boots rated to -30°C
Balaclava · wool hat · neck gaiter · outer mittens
Hand and toe warmers for aurora watching
🌸 Spring & Autumn (Apr, Sep, Oct) — Variable
Mid-weight insulated jacket (not lightweight summer puffer)
Waterproof shell outer layer — mandatory
Thermal base layers for cooler days
Waterproof hiking boots or rubber boots
Wool hat and gloves — evenings are cold
Fleece mid-layer
☀️ Summer (May–Aug) — Mild But Wet
Waterproof jacket — still essential even in July
Light to mid-weight insulation for evenings
Hiking boots with ankle support
Sleep mask — non-negotiable
Sun protection: SPF50+, UV sunglasses, hat
Light layer for city evenings
🏭 On Any Expedition Ship
Binoculars — essential for wildlife · 8x42 or 10x42 minimum
Waterproof bag or dry sack for camera and electronics
Seasickness medication — the Norwegian Sea can be rough
All prescription medications in carry-on
Expedition ships often provide rubber boots & parkas — confirm with your cruise line
✨ Northern Lights Viewing — Managing Expectations
The aurora borealis is not guaranteed on any single night. It requires three conditions simultaneously: solar activity (geomagnetic storm), darkness (no Midnight Sun), and clear skies (no cloud cover). Tromsø’s weather is frequently overcast. Many visitors see nothing on a short stay; many see extraordinary displays. The best strategy is a minimum of 3–4 nights in the region to improve your odds, booking an aurora tour with a guide who chases clear skies by vehicle away from city light pollution, and using the Space Weather Live app and Yr.no (Norwegian weather service) to track conditions in real time. September through February offers the best combination of aurora probability and manageable temperatures.
☀️ Midnight Sun — Sleep Preparation
The Midnight Sun is a genuine experience, not a metaphor. From late May to late July the sun does not set. Your cabin on an expedition ship will have blackout curtains — but your pre-cruise hotel nights in Tromsø may not. Pack a high-quality sleep mask and arrive with a plan for your sleep schedule. Your body clock will take 48–72 hours to adjust. Do not plan demanding activities for your first morning in Tromsø if you arrived overnight from a long-haul flight.
★ VTS Best Time to Visit Tromsø

For the Northern Lights: September is the VTS sweet spot — mild enough for comfortable shore excursions, dark enough for reliable aurora viewing, and the city is quieter than peak summer. October and November offer the best aurora probabilities but require serious cold-weather preparation. For Expedition Cruises to Svalbard: June and July offer the clearest ice conditions, longest daylight for wildlife viewing, and the most dramatic high-Arctic landscapes. For a city experience with both phenomena possible: late March to early April, when the aurora is still possible on clear nights and the returning sunlight is extraordinary and golden.

Getting to Tromsø
Tromsø Airport & Ground Transport

Nearly all cruise passengers arrive in Tromsø by air. There is no practical overland route for international visitors, and the city’s position 350 km above the Arctic Circle makes it genuinely remote. The airport (TOS) is small, easy to navigate, and just 6.4 km from the city centre. Ground transport is straightforward but with one important fact: Uber, Lyft, and Bolt do not operate in Tromsø. Taxis and the Flybussen airport bus are your two options from the airport. Within the city and between terminals, local taxis and the city bus network handle everything.

Flying to Tromsø
International Routes & Connection Points

Tromsø Airport (TOS) is well-connected to Scandinavian hubs. Most international passengers connect through Oslo (OSL), with direct flights also available from Copenhagen, London, and several other European cities depending on season. The key planning consideration is the connection time in Oslo — the airport is large and Schengen transit times should be respected. Allow a minimum of 90 minutes at Oslo for connections.

From North America
Connect via Oslo (OSL)
No direct flights from North America to Tromsø. Fly transatlantic to Oslo Gardermoen (Norwegian Air, SAS, British Airways via London, Lufthansa via Frankfurt, Air France via Paris). Connect to Tromsø on SAS or Norwegian. Total journey time from New York: ~14–18 hours including connection.
✈ Oslo–Tromsø: ~2 hrs · Multiple daily flights
From the UK
London via Oslo or direct
Norwegian Air offers seasonal direct flights London Gatwick (LGW) to Tromsø. SAS operates via Copenhagen or Oslo. Typical journey time from London via Oslo: ~5–6 hours total. Book early for winter flights — Northern Lights season drives high demand from November onwards.
✈ London–Tromsø: ~3 hrs direct (seasonal) or ~5 hrs via Oslo
From Continental Europe
Via Oslo, Copenhagen or direct
Direct seasonal routes from Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, and Munich operate in peak periods. Year-round connections via Oslo Gardermoen (1.5–2 hrs) or Oslo Torp. SAS and Norwegian are the primary operators. Check current seasonal direct schedules before booking Oslo connections.
✈ Via Oslo: ~2 hrs · Direct (where available): ~2–3 hrs
Arrival Day Planning
Build in a full day buffer
Given the remote location and connection requirements, we strongly recommend arriving in Tromsø at least one full day before your ship sails. Winter weather in Norway can delay flights significantly. A missed connection in Oslo on departure day can mean missing your ship. Two days early is our standard recommendation for expedition cruise passengers.
⚡ VTS Rule: Arrive the day before minimum · Two days preferred
⚠ Winter Flight Delays — Build Your Buffer
Norwegian winter weather causes flight delays and cancellations regularly, particularly at Oslo Gardermoen where the connecting bank of Tromsø flights operates. In December through February, snow, ice, and low visibility conditions are common. If your expedition ship departs on a Saturday morning, book your Tromsø arrival for Thursday at the absolute latest — not Friday. Airlines will rebook you but the ship will not wait.
🏭 Expedition Gear Shipping
Many experienced expedition travellers ship heavy gear (drysuits, large camera systems, underwater equipment) to their Tromsø hotel in advance rather than flying with it. Ask your hotel about accepting pre-shipped packages — most will hold them. Check with your cruise line about their luggage storage and handling policies at Prostneset or Breivika terminals before planning this.
★ VTS Transport Recommendation

For most expedition cruise passengers arriving at TOS: take a taxi to your hotel. The 320–400 NOK cost is reasonable, the journey is 10–15 minutes, and after a transatlantic or long-haul flight with a connection in Oslo, the simplicity is worth every krone. The Flybussen is a good option if you are travelling light and staying at a city centre hotel. Book your flight arrival for at least the day before sailing, and keep your expedition cruise line’s emergency contact and your travel insurance policy number accessible from the moment you board your outbound flight. The Arctic is extraordinary but remote — treat the logistics accordingly.

Parking in Tromsø
Car Parking at & Near the Cruise Terminals

Tromsø is a city most international expedition cruise passengers fly into, so parking is primarily relevant for Norwegian and Scandinavian passengers driving in. If you are driving, the parking situation is manageable at both terminals — on-site parking exists at Prostneset, and city car parks near both terminals serve the rest. Norwegian parking rates are significantly higher than UK or US equivalents, and payment is almost always by card or the EasyPark app.

📱 EasyPark App — Essential for Parking in Norway
Norway has moved aggressively away from cash-based parking. EasyPark is the dominant app used across Tromsø and most of Norway for paying for parking. Download it and set up a payment method before you arrive — you will use it at nearly every paid parking location in the city. Available on iOS and Android. Most car parks also have card machines as a backup, but the app is faster and more reliable.
📅
Book Airport Parking in Advance
Tromsø Airport long-stay parking (P3/P4) is significantly cheaper when pre-booked online at avinor.no vs paying on arrival. For summer and winter Northern Lights season, book at the same time as your flights.
Winter Tyres Mandatory
In Norway, winter tyres are legally required from 1 November to 1 April (and earlier in mountain areas). Rental cars will have these fitted as standard. If driving your own vehicle, ensure compliance before departure.
📱
Download EasyPark Before Arrival
Set up EasyPark (iOS/Android) with your payment card before landing in Tromsø. Nearly all paid parking in the city and surrounding area uses this app. Cash is not accepted at most car parks.
💪
Most International Passengers Fly In
If you are flying in from outside Scandinavia, parking is not relevant — take a taxi or Flybussen from TOS to your hotel or terminal. Parking is primarily for Norwegian and Scandinavian passengers driving from home.
★ VTS Parking Recommendation

For most international expedition cruise passengers: skip the parking question entirely and take a taxi or Flybussen from TOS airport. For Scandinavian passengers driving in and flying home: park at TOS Airport P3 or P4 (pre-booked at avinor.no) — rates are reasonable for the duration of most Arctic expeditions, the terminal is a short taxi or bus ride away, and you leave the car safely at the airport for the flight home. For those who must park at the terminal: Prostneset on-site parking is the most convenient, but the EasyPark app is essential and rates are higher than airport alternatives.

Embarkation Day
What to Expect When You Board in Tromsø

Expedition ship embarkation in Tromsø operates differently from large cruise ports. The ships are smaller, the process is more personal, and the timeline is compact. Hurtigruten coastal and HX Expeditions typically open check-in at 15:00, close at 18:00, with cabins available from 16:00. Expedition team briefings occur before departure — attendance is mandatory. Larger cruise ships at Breivika will follow their cruise line’s standard staggered boarding window process. Always confirm exact times in your travel documents, received approximately 30 days before departure.

Most city centre hotels are a 5–15 minute walk or short taxi ride from Prostneset terminal. Samuel Arnesensgt. 5 is the Prostneset address. Breivika passengers need a taxi (~13 min) or cruise shuttle. Attach luggage labels before leaving the hotel. At Prostneset, luggage storage is available if you arrive before check-in opens.
3
~14:00–15:00 — Check-In Opens
Drop Luggage & Check In
Porters or expedition staff receive your luggage at the terminal. Bags will arrive in your cabin later. Proceed to check-in counters with passport and travel documents. Expedition lines like HX and Silversea have a more personal, hotel-style check-in — less queuing, more individual attention. You will receive your cabin key card and onboard account card.
4
From 16:00 — Cabins Available
Board & Explore the Ship
Cabins open at approximately 16:00 on Hurtigruten and HX sailings. Before cabins are ready, explore the ship — expedition vessels are smaller and more intimate than mainstream cruise ships, and the public spaces reward a slow walk-through. Introduce yourself to the expedition team — they are the heart of the voyage.
5
Before Departure
Mandatory Safety & Expedition Briefing
Attend the mandatory safety briefing (muster drill — location in your travel documents or cruise app). On HX and Hurtigruten, an expedition team briefing also occurs before sailing — introducing the team, the itinerary, and what to expect in the days ahead. Do not miss either. The expedition team briefing in particular sets the tone for the entire voyage.
Departure — Get on Deck
Sailing from Tromsø — The Arctic Begins Here
Do not be below deck when the ship clears Tromsøysund. The mountains surrounding the island, the harbour lights, the possibility of an eagle or sea eagle overhead — this is the moment. In winter, darkness falls and the aurora may appear before you have left Norwegian waters. In summer, the Midnight Sun casts everything in gold. Either way, be on deck. Dress for it. Bring your binoculars.
⚠ Check-In Closes at 18:00 — No Exceptions
Hurtigruten and HX Expeditions close check-in at 18:00 sharp. Expedition ships have strict departure schedules tied to tidal conditions, wildlife windows, and ice charts that cannot be delayed for late passengers. Allow significant buffer time for hotel check-out, taxi, and luggage. If your hotel check-out is at noon and check-in opens at 15:00, spend those three hours in the city — not waiting at the terminal.

Disembarkation
Returning to Tromsø After Your Expedition
Arrival Time in Tromsø Varies by itinerary · morning arrivals are typical for Hurtigruten coastal · expedition vessels may arrive at any time depending on voyage length and conditions
Disembarkation Process Expedition ships are smaller — disembarkation is faster and more relaxed than large cruise ports · typically by group or cabin number · expedition team farewell in the lounge
Luggage Bags placed outside cabin door the previous evening · collected to the terminal baggage hall · porters available at Prostneset
Taxi from Prostneset Taxi rank directly outside terminal · Tromsø Taxi +47 776 03 000 · Pre-book the evening before for early departures
Airport Transfer (TOS) Flybussen: ~70 NOK / 15 min from Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum stop (130m from Prostneset terminal) · Taxi: ~350–400 NOK / 10–15 min
Flight Timing Book flights home no earlier than 3 hours after your scheduled docking time · Arctic conditions can affect arrival times · expedition cruises may return early or slightly late depending on sea and ice conditions
Post-Cruise Stay Strongly recommended to book at least one night in Tromsø after disembarkation · allow time to process the experience and avoid flight stress if ship arrives late
★ VTS Embark Day Recommendation

Spend your final morning in Tromsø at the cable car or Polar Museum, not in a hotel lobby waiting for check-in. The expedition begins when you step outside on embarkation day — not when you board. On departure, stand on the aft deck until the White Mountains of Tromsøya disappear behind you. And on return: book at least one night in Tromsø after your expedition. You will want time to absorb what you have just experienced before flying home. The city feels different when you return from the Arctic.

Explore the City Before You Sail
Tromsø — What to Do on Your Pre-Cruise Days

Tromsø is a destination in its own right, not just a departure point. The city is compact, walkable, and packed with genuinely world-class experiences tied directly to the Arctic environment you are about to sail into. Two days here before your expedition is our standard recommendation — enough to understand the landscape, begin the mental shift to Arctic mode, and do the things that only Tromsø offers.

✓ Year-Round ✨ Northern Lights Season ☀️ Midnight Sun Season ❄ Winter Only
🚩
Fjellheisen Cable Car — Mt. Storsteinen
Year-Round · 421m above sea level
The definitive Tromsø experience. A 4-minute cable car ride to 421 metres, with 360-degree views of the city, the fjords, the surrounding mountains, and the open Norwegian Sea. In winter, it is the best place in the city to watch the aurora. In summer, the Midnight Sun at the summit is extraordinary. The restaurant at the top serves Norwegian food with views that justify the price.
~250–350 NOK return · Bus to lower station from Storgata
📷
Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen)
Year-Round · Evening Midnight Concerts
One of Norway’s most recognisable buildings — its triangular aluminum panels are designed to evoke icebergs or traditional Sami tents. The interior is dominated by a 140 m² stained-glass mosaic on the east wall. The Midnight Concert series runs several evenings per week in season — 45 minutes of organ, choir, and chamber music in extraordinary acoustics. Book in advance.
~80 NOK entry · Midnight Concert ~350 NOK
🏭
Polar Museum (Polarmuseet)
Year-Round · Essential Pre-Expedition
The most relevant museum for expedition cruise passengers anywhere in this guide programme. Chronicles Tromsø’s role as the launch point for Arctic exploration — Roald Amundsen, Fridtjof Nansen, and the great polar voyages all connect here. Trapper huts, original equipment, and genuine artefacts from early Arctic expeditions. Walk through the door knowing you are about to add your name to a tradition that began here.
~120 NOK · Søndre Tollbodgate 11B
🦑
Polaria Arctic Experience Centre
Year-Round · World’s Northernmost Aquarium
The iceberg-shaped building houses the world’s most northernmost aquarium. Bearded seals, Arctic fish, a 180-degree Arctic panorama film, and educational exhibits on the polar environment. Particularly valuable before an HX or Silversea Svalbard expedition — the film prepares you for the scale of what you are about to see. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
~150 NOK · Hjalmar Johansens gate 12
🍺
Mack Brewery & Ølhallen
Year-Round · World’s Northernmost Brewery
Founded in 1877, Mack is the world’s northernmost brewery and a Tromsø institution. The Ølhallen pub attached to the brewery is the oldest pub in Tromsø — unpretentious, historic, and full of locals. Excellent Arctic Lager. Tours of the brewery available. A proper pre-expedition evening drink here feels entirely right.
Free entry to Ølhallen · Brewery tours available
🌎
Storgata & City Centre Walk
Year-Round · Main Pedestrian Street
Tromsø’s main pedestrian street is the city’s social pulse. Lined with cafés, restaurants, independent shops, and the historic wooden Tromsø Cathedral (Norway’s only wooden cathedral). During the Polar Night, the street is lit with warm festive lights creating an extraordinary atmosphere. In summer the outdoor seating fills quickly. Morning coffee at Kaffebønna on Storgata is how locals start the day.

Season-Specific Activities — Book in Advance
Northern Lights Tour
Sep–Mar · Clear nights only · Book with reputable operator
The most important pre-cruise activity for winter expedition passengers. A guided tour drives you away from city light pollution to clear-sky locations tracked in real time. The guide will have aurora forecast apps and weather data running constantly. Tours typically run 3–5 hours and include hot drinks. Book a tour that guarantees a second attempt if clouds prevent viewing. Best operators: Visit Tromsø, Tromsø Arctic Reindeer, Arctic Guide Service. Look on Viator and GetYourGuide for bookable options.
~1,200–1,800 NOK per person · Book well in advance in peak winter
🐋
Whale Watching — Orca & Humpback
Oct–Jan · Peak Nov–Jan · Kaldfjorden & outer fjords
Orca (killer whales) and humpback whales follow herring into the fjords around Tromsø from October through January, with November and December typically offering the densest concentrations. Boat tours operate daily from the harbour — some offer snorkelling with the whales. This is genuinely one of the great wildlife experiences available in northern Europe. Book 2–3 weeks in advance for peak season.
~1,200–2,500 NOK per person · Snorkel tours cost more
🐺
Dog Sledding
Nov–Mar · Snow conditions required
Half-day and full-day dog sledding experiences available from operators based outside the city. Passenger tours and self-drive options available — driving your own team is an extraordinary experience for a first-timer. Trips run through snow-covered forests and frozen lake landscapes. Pick-up from Tromsø city centre hotels included by most operators.
~1,500–3,500 NOK per person · Self-drive costs more
🦌
Reindeer & Sami Cultural Experience
Year-Round (best Oct–Apr)
Visit a genuine Sami reindeer herding family — feed and interact with the reindeer, hear about traditional Sami culture, share a meal of reindeer meat in a traditional lavvo tent. Deeply authentic and directly relevant to the Arctic cultures you will encounter on Svalbard and Norwegian coastal expeditions. Pick-up from Tromsø available.
~1,200–1,600 NOK per person
🏕️
Midnight Sun Hiking
May–Jul · 24-hr daylight
In Midnight Sun season, hiking at 2 AM under full sunlight on the mountains surrounding Tromsø is a genuinely surreal experience. The Sherpa staircase (1,200 steps) from the Arctic Cathedral side leads to the same summit as the cable car. The Tromsø City Trail connects multiple peaks. No trail darkness in summer — just extraordinary Arctic light and views over the city and fjords at any hour you choose.

Arctic Sauna & Polar Plunge
Year-Round · Harbour location
Sauna Pust Tromsø in the harbour offers a quintessential Nordic experience — wood-fired sauna on the water, followed by a polar plunge into Tromsø Sound. Temperatures vary from barely above freezing to considerably below, depending on season. A genuinely invigorating pre-expedition ritual. Book online — it fills up quickly in winter.

★ VTS Pre-Expedition Tromsø Recommendation

Spend your first day in Tromsø doing the Polar Museum in the morning and the cable car in the afternoon. The museum will frame everything you are about to see; the summit will show you the scale of the landscape surrounding the city. On your second day: choose one activity aligned with your season (Northern Lights tour in winter, whale watching in November–January, Midnight Sun hiking in summer). Evening before sailing: the Arctic Cathedral midnight concert if it is running. Dinner at Fiskekompaniet on the harbour — Arctic seafood with the water outside the window, the ship somewhere nearby. Then pack your binoculars in your day bag and try to sleep.

Where to Stay
Hotels in Tromsø — Pre & Post Expedition

Tromsø is a small city and almost every hotel worth staying in is within walking distance of Prostneset terminal or a short taxi ride from Breivika. The waterfront hotels are the most atmospheric — you can see the harbour and, in some cases, watch the ships come and go from your room. Book well in advance for Northern Lights season (November–March) and peak summer (June–August) — the city fills quickly.

Clarion Hotel The Edge
Strandveien 2, Tromsø Harbour

The most talked-about hotel in Tromsø and our top recommendation. Opened 2014 on the harbour front with 290 rooms, a skybar with city and mountain views, rooftop terrace, and arguably the best hotel breakfast in Northern Norway. Directly opposite Tromsø Cathedral, 300m from Polaria. Aurora tour operators pick up from directly outside. Northern Lights visible from the harbour at night. Consistently excellent staff reviews.

Common Questions
Tromsø Expedition Port — FAQ
It depends on your ship. Prostneset (city centre, Samuel Arnesensgt. 5) handles Hurtigruten coastal, HX Expeditions, and most smaller expedition vessels — you step off the ship directly into the city. Breivika (4–5 km north) handles larger cruise ships. Your travel documents (received approximately 30 days before departure) will confirm your terminal. You can also check the Port of Tromsø ship traffic schedule at tromso.havn.no. Do not assume based on cruise line alone — confirm your specific sailing.
No. Uber, Lyft, and Bolt do not operate in Tromsø. All taxis are licensed local operators. Use the Taxifix app (iOS and Android) to pre-book or order a taxi, or call Tromsø Taxi (+47 776 03 000) or Din Taxi (+47 401 02 045). Taxi ranks are located at TOS Airport, Prostneset terminal, and in the city centre. Taxis accept all major credit and debit cards.
The Northern Lights are visible in Tromsø from late September through late March — any night when the sky is sufficiently dark and cloud-free with adequate geomagnetic activity. Peak probability months are October, November, February, and March, when clear nights are most common and solar activity is often high. January and December offer the darkest skies (Polar Night) but are also frequently overcast. A minimum of 3–4 nights significantly improves your odds over a 1–2 night stay. Always book an aurora tour with a guide who chases clear skies by vehicle rather than relying on viewing from the city.
Taxi: ~350–400 NOK, 10–15 minutes. Available 24/7 at the taxi rank outside arrivals. Use Taxifix app to pre-book. Flybussen airport express bus: ~60–80 NOK, 15–20 minutes. Stops at several city centre hotels and at Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum, which is 130m walk from Prostneset terminal. The bus runs from early morning until approximately 00:30 AM. Uber and Bolt are not available in Tromsø.
Both HX Expeditions and Silversea require a minimum of 6 months passport validity beyond the end of your cruise. This is standard for all international expedition cruise operators. Norwegian domestic law also requires a valid passport for all non-EEA nationals. Check your specific cruise line’s travel requirements page before booking and again 30 days before departure when your travel documents arrive. For Antarctic departures from Tromsø, HX also requires a medical screening form to be submitted and approved before travel documents are issued.
Two days early is our strong recommendation. One day is the absolute minimum. The reasons: Norwegian winter weather causes flight delays and missed Oslo connections regularly; Tromsø itself rewards the time with extraordinary pre-expedition experiences (Polar Museum, cable car, Northern Lights or Midnight Sun depending on season); and the mental transition from daily life to Arctic expedition benefits from unhurried arrival time. If your ship sails Saturday, arrive Thursday. If you are flying via Oslo in winter, the buffer between a missed connection and a missed ship can be the difference between going and not going.
Norwegian Krone (NOK) is the currency. Norway is one of the most cashless societies in the world — credit and debit cards are accepted virtually everywhere including taxis, small cafés, market stalls, and parking machines. Keep a small amount of NOK cash (~500–1,000 NOK) for tipping and any situation where a card machine is unavailable. ATMs are located at TOS Airport, the city centre, and major hotels. The EasyPark app (requires a payment card) is essential for parking.
HX Expeditions provides rubber boots (sized to each passenger) and a complimentary expedition parka on all their Arctic voyages. You do not need to bring these items — but you do need your own thermal base layers, warm mid-layers, waterproof trousers, and warm hats and gloves. Silversea and Viking Expeditions also provide similar gear — confirm with your specific cruise line. Always verify current policies in your travel documents, as these can change between seasons.
