The Gulf Coast’s Biggest Cruise Hub
Galveston — Texas’s Gateway to the Caribbean

Galveston is to the Gulf Coast what Miami is to Florida — the dominant cruise homeport for an entire region. Situated on a barrier island 50 miles south of Houston, the Port of Galveston is the fourth busiest cruise homeport in the United States, projecting 3.9 million passengers across 445 sailings in 2026. Six major cruise lines operate from four dedicated terminals, offering year-round Western Caribbean, Bahamas, and Mexican itineraries. The port celebrated its 200th anniversary in October 2025 and is in the middle of an unprecedented expansion programme backed by a $2.4 billion master plan.

The critical planning fact for Galveston is the same as Southampton: four separate terminals serve different cruise lines, and knowing which one your ship uses before you arrive is essential. Terminal 25 and Terminal 28 are adjacent on Harborside Drive and serve Carnival, Disney, Princess, and Norwegian. Terminal 10 — Royal Caribbean’s purpose-built, world-first net-zero facility — is a separate, five-minute drive west on Royal Caribbean Way. Terminal 16, the newest addition opened November 2025, serves MSC Cruises and Norwegian. Each terminal has its own parking, its own drop-off logistics, and its own access road. Navigate to the right address, not just “the port.”

“Galveston doesn’t just launch your cruise — it earns a night of its own. The Strand, the beach, the Victorian architecture, the Gulf air. It is the best reason in American cruising to arrive a day early.”
🚀 2026 — Record-Breaking Season & New Terminal
2026 is Galveston’s most ambitious cruise season in its 200-year history: 3.9 million projected passengers, 445 sailings, six cruise lines across four terminals. Terminal 16 opened November 2025 — a $156 million, 160,000 sq ft facility with a 1,600-space parking garage dedicated to MSC Cruises (MSC Seascape) and Norwegian Cruise Line (Norwegian Viva). Royal Caribbean has confirmed Icon of the Seas — the world’s largest cruise ship — will debut at Galveston in August 2027, cementing the port’s ambition to reach the top three US cruise homeports.

Terminal 25 and 28 are adjacent and walkable to each other. Terminal 10 is a 5-minute drive west. Terminal 16 is also a short drive from Terminals 25/28. The port is well-signed from I-45, but using the exact GPS address for your terminal avoids confusion on busy embarkation mornings when multiple ships depart simultaneously.

⚠ Terminal 10 Is NOT on Harborside Drive
Many older guides, GPS apps, and even some cruise line documents still list Terminal 10’s address as 1028 Harborside Drive. The correct GPS address is 1152 Royal Caribbean Way, Galveston, TX 77554. Using the old address can take you to the wrong location. Royal Caribbean’s terminal is approximately one mile west of Terminals 25 and 28 — a separate campus entirely. Do not park at T25/T28 lots and attempt to walk to Terminal 10.

ⓘ Lyft is the Exclusive Rideshare at Port of Galveston
Unlike most US cruise ports, Galveston has a formal rideshare partnership: Lyft is the exclusive permitted rideshare service at Port of Galveston cruise terminals. Uber is not permitted at terminal drop-off and pickup zones. When ordering your rideshare to or from the port, use the Lyft app. Drivers using Uber who attempt to access the terminal zone may be turned away. This applies to all four terminals.
★ VTS Perspective

Galveston is genuinely underrated as a pre-cruise destination. Most passengers drive in from Houston and go straight to the ship. But the Strand National Historic Landmark District — Victorian-era architecture, boutique shops, excellent seafood restaurants — is a genuine pleasure for an overnight stay. The beach at Seawall Boulevard, the Bishop’s Palace, Moody Gardens, and the Gulf of Mexico right there at your feet all argue for arriving the night before. The logistics also make it compelling: no flight risk, an easy drive from a major city, and a port that — when it’s not hurricane season — is one of the most efficient embarkation operations in American cruising.

Climate, Hurricane Season & Packing
Monthly Weather — Galveston, Texas

Galveston has a subtropical climate — hot and humid summers, mild winters, and year-round warmth that makes it genuinely pleasant from October through April. The Gulf of Mexico moderates temperatures somewhat but adds persistent humidity from May through September. The critical planning consideration unique to Galveston is hurricane season: June 1 through November 30, with peak risk from August through October. Galveston sits on a low-lying barrier island and is acutely vulnerable to Gulf storms. Cruise lines monitor conditions and will cancel or reroute sailings when necessary. Travel insurance that covers hurricane-related disruption is non-negotiable if sailing between June and November.

🌕 Winter — Dec to Feb
Best Weather for Comfort
Mild, sunny, and far less humid. January averages 60°F high — sweater weather, not cold. Humidity drops significantly. The island is quieter, hotel rates lower, and the weather on deck in the Western Caribbean or Bahamas is glorious. Short cold fronts (“Blue Northers”) can drop temps temporarily but rarely affect sailings.
🌸 Spring — Mar to May
VTS Top Pick
Warming rapidly — pleasant before the heat arrives. March through April are the sweet spot: 65–78°F, lower humidity than summer, beautiful Gulf water warming up. May heats up quickly. Spring break brings crowds in mid-March. Great conditions for pre-cruise Galveston exploration.
⚠ Summer — Jun to Sep
Hot, humid, and hurricane season. June–September averages 88–92°F with humidity making it feel significantly hotter. Peak hurricane risk August–October. Sailings can be cancelled or rerouted. If you sail in this window, have trip insurance with hurricane and weather cancellation coverage. Embarkation mornings can be brutally hot outdoors.
🍂 Fall — Oct to Nov
Good Value Window
Cooling and drying — hurricane risk easing. October marks the rapid improvement: temperatures drop from 83°F to 70°F, humidity falls, and crowds thin. Hurricane risk technically runs to November 30 but drops sharply after October. Excellent value month with near-perfect Caribbean sailing conditions.

🌩 Hurricane Season — June 1 to November 30 · Read This Before Booking
Galveston sits on a low-lying Gulf Coast barrier island with significant hurricane exposure. The major storms that have struck or directly impacted the island include the catastrophic 1900 Galveston Hurricane (deadliest US natural disaster in history), Hurricane Alicia (1983), and Hurricane Ike (2008 — caused widespread damage). If sailing between June and November, comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers hurricane-related trip cancellation, interruption, and delay is non-negotiable. Cruise lines will cancel or reroute sailings when tropical systems threaten — they will typically offer a credit or refund, but your hotel, parking, and transport costs are your responsibility without insurance. Monitor NOAA’s National Hurricane Center at nhc.noaa.gov in the days before any summer or autumn sailing.
What to Pack for Galveston
Gulf Coast Packing by Season
☀️ Summer (Jun–Sep) — Hot & Humid
Moisture-wicking lightweight clothing — cotton feels miserable in 90°F humidity
SPF 50+ sunscreen — UV index peaks at 10 in June–August
Wide-brim hat and quality sunglasses — mandatory outside
Insect repellent — Gulf mosquitoes after rain events
Travel insurance with hurricane coverage — in your day bag
🌸 Spring & Fall (Mar–May, Oct–Nov) — Ideal
Light layers — mornings and evenings can be cooler
Light waterproof or rain layer — afternoon Gulf thunderstorms possible
Sunscreen still essential — UV remains strong April–October
Comfortable walking shoes for Strand and Seawall exploration
❄ Winter (Dec–Feb) — Mild
Light-to-mid jacket — 60°F feels cool in Gulf breeze
Layers for embarkation morning — Blue Norther cold fronts arrive quickly
Summer clothes still needed for Caribbean port days
Sunscreen still required for deck time and port days
⚓ For Your Western Caribbean Cruise
Reef-safe sunscreen — required in Cozumel and Roatan waters
Water shoes for tender ports and beach excursions
US dollars in small bills for Cozumel, Roatan, and Belize tips
Lightweight rain jacket for afternoon tropical showers at ports
★ VTS Best Time to Sail From Galveston

March and April are our top picks: warm but not brutal, humidity manageable, Gulf water inviting, and the pre-cruise day on the Strand is genuinely enjoyable. November through February offer the best comfort for those who dislike heat — winters are mild enough that the ship’s Caribbean destinations feel dramatically different from embarkation day, which is part of the appeal. Avoid August and September unless your schedule requires it — the combination of extreme heat, humidity, and peak hurricane risk makes this the most difficult period at Galveston. If you sail in summer, buy the trip insurance first.

Getting to Galveston
Airports, Distances & Ground Transport

Galveston is a barrier island accessible by road only (via I-45 South from Houston) or by ferry from the Bolivar Peninsula to the east. There is no train, no light rail, and no direct bus service from the Houston airports to the cruise port. Most passengers drive to Galveston — it is the dominant way to arrive. For those flying in, the choice between Houston’s two airports matters significantly: Hobby (HOU) is considerably closer and cheaper to reach from than Bush Intercontinental (IAH).

How to Get from Houston to Galveston Cruise Port
🚘
Drive Your Own Car
I-45 South from Houston · most popular option
Fuel + parking
⏱ ~45–90 min depending on airport or origin
The most popular choice for Galveston — the majority of cruise passengers drive in from Houston and beyond. I-45 South exits directly to Harborside Drive. On-site port parking available for all four terminals. Allow extra time on Saturday mornings when multiple ships depart — I-45 and Harborside Drive can back up significantly. Confirm which terminal exit to use before departure.
Best for: Most passengers · easiest overall option
📱
Lyft (Exclusive Rideshare)
HOU or IAH to terminal · Uber NOT permitted
$55–$120
⏱ ~45–60 min from HOU · ~75–90 min from IAH
Lyft is the exclusive rideshare at Port of Galveston. Use the Lyft app, not Uber. Request in advance — demand spikes dramatically on peak Saturday mornings when multiple ships depart. Enter the specific terminal GPS address in the app to ensure your driver goes to the right location. Lyft XL for groups with large luggage is recommended.
Best for: Solo or couple flying in · no rental car
🚌
Shared Shuttle Service
Airport to terminal · per person pricing
$28–$65 per person
⏱ ~1.5–2 hrs · may stop at multiple hotels/terminals
Shared shuttle services including Royal Galveston Shuttle, Galveston Shuttle, and others run from both HOU and IAH to the cruise terminals. Per-person pricing makes this cost-effective for solo travellers. Book in advance — space fills on peak sailing weekends. Carnival and Royal Caribbean also offer cruise line shuttle programmes (Carnival: IAH 10 AM–12 PM, HOU 10 AM–12:30 PM).
Best for: Solo travellers · budget-conscious
🚗
Private Transfer
Pre-booked car or SUV · fixed pricing
$120–$250+
⏱ ~45–90 min · no surge · direct to your terminal
Pre-booked private car or SUV from your hotel or airport directly to the correct terminal. Fixed pricing, no Lyft surge surprises, luggage assistance included. Best value when split among 3–4 passengers from IAH. Always give the driver your specific terminal GPS address in advance. Several Houston-based companies specialise in cruise transfers.
Best for: Groups · families · IAH arrivals
🚕
Taxi
From airports or Houston hotels
$140–$200
⏱ ~45–90 min depending on origin
Taxis are available at both Houston airports and operate on metered fares. Flat rate estimates: HOU to Galveston ~$140–160; IAH to Galveston ~$160–200. Agree on a flat rate before departure for the airport-to-Galveston trip. Give the driver the specific terminal GPS address. Less flexible than Lyft but not subject to surge pricing.
Best for: No-app travellers · predictable pricing
🚙
Rental Car
Drive to port · drop at hotel or park at terminal
Varies + parking
⏱ ~45–90 min from Houston airports
Useful if you want to explore Galveston Island before sailing. No rental car agencies at the cruise terminals — return your car to the airport or arrange one-way drop-off at a Galveston agency. Factor in the port parking cost if keeping the car at the terminal. Most hotel park-and-cruise packages are a better deal than terminal parking if you’re renting.
Best for: Pre-cruise Galveston exploration
⚠ Saturday Morning Traffic — Allow Extra Time
Galveston is a barrier island accessed via a single main highway (I-45 South). On peak Saturday mornings when multiple ships depart simultaneously, traffic on I-45 approaching the island and on Harborside Drive within the port can back up significantly. In peak summer months (July, August) and spring break (mid-March), add 30–45 minutes to all transport time estimates. Arriving the night before and staying in Galveston eliminates this risk entirely.
★ VTS Transport Recommendation

For most passengers: drive. Galveston is a highway drive from Houston and the port parking is well-organised. If flying in, choose Hobby (HOU) over Bush Intercontinental (IAH) where your flight options allow — you save 30 minutes and $30–60 on the transfer. Book a shared shuttle or pre-book a private car rather than relying on Lyft surge pricing on sailing morning. Whatever you choose: enter the specific terminal GPS address, not just “Port of Galveston” or “Galveston Cruise Terminal.” There are four terminals and your Lyft driver or taxi may take you to the wrong one if you are not specific.

Parking
Official Port Parking by Terminal

Galveston parking is terminal-specific: the lots serving Terminal 25/28 (Harborside Drive cluster) are different from those serving Terminal 10 (Royal Caribbean Way) and Terminal 16. Using the wrong parking lot means a taxi or shuttle to get to your ship. When pre-booking on the Port of Galveston website, select your specific ship name and it will direct you to the correct lots. Official port parking costs $22–26 per day before fees; private lots offer alternatives from around $17–19 per day.

ⓘ Hotel Park-and-Cruise Packages
Many Galveston hotels offer packages combining one night’s accommodation with multi-day cruise parking. If you are already planning to stay the night before sailing (which VTS recommends), this is almost always the best total value. The hotel parks your car for the cruise duration while you check in for your sailing. Compare the total cost (hotel room + parking) against official port parking rates before booking. Several Galveston hotels are within walking distance or a short Lyft ride of all terminal clusters.
🔍
Select Your Ship, Not Just Terminal
When booking on portofgalveston.com, the form asks for your specific ship name. This routes you to the correct lots automatically. Terminal assignments can change — trust your ship name, not memory.
📅
Book Early for Saturdays
Express Lot (T25/T28) and North Premium Lot (T10) fill earliest because they require no shuttle. Book these lots when you book your cruise, not the week before.
☀️
Summer Heat & Uncovered Lots
All Terminal 10 parking is uncovered except the solar-shaded North Lot. In July and August, a car left in an uncovered lot in Galveston heat for 7 days will be extremely hot on return. Consider covered alternatives or the shaded North Lot.
💰
Credit Cards Only — No Cash
Port of Galveston official parking accepts credit cards only — cash is not accepted at any official parking facility. Pre-booking online is strongly recommended.
🏝
T10 and T25/28 Are NOT Interchangeable
Terminal 10 and Terminals 25/28 have completely separate parking clusters about a mile apart. Parking in the wrong cluster means a Lyft ride to your ship on embarkation morning. Most third-party lots only serve T25/T28.
🏠
Hotel Park-and-Cruise Often Wins
Galveston hotels offering park-and-cruise packages combine an overnight stay with multi-day parking. The total cost typically beats official port parking by $40–80 for a 7-night cruise while getting you the pre-cruise overnight VTS recommends.
★ VTS Parking Recommendation

Book your parking the same day you book your cruise — the Express Lot and North Premium Lot fill quickly for peak Saturday sailings. For Carnival and Disney passengers at T25/28: the Express Lot is the most convenient (zero shuttle wait, short walk to terminal). For Royal Caribbean at T10: the North Premium Lot’s solar shade is worth the premium in summer — book it. For anyone doing an overnight in Galveston before sailing: compare hotel park-and-cruise packages first. The math almost always works in your favour compared to booking parking separately.

Galveston embarkation is well-organized but has two variables that demand planning: Saturday morning I-45 traffic and summer heat. Both terminals 25/28 and Terminal 10 are exposed to the Gulf Coast sun, and waiting outdoors in July or August before doors open can be genuinely uncomfortable. Arriving in your allocated window rather than hours early is both the rule and the smart move. All lines use staggered arrival windows — find yours in your cruise line’s app 14–21 days before sailing. The port advises arriving approximately three hours before your boarding time to allow for parking, shuttle transfers where applicable, and check-in.

Water bottle — outdoor queueing in Texas summer heat is serious
Embarkation Day Timeline
Hotel or Home to Onboard — Step by Step
1
Morning — Work Backwards from Your Boarding Window
Calculate Your Departure Time
Find your allocated boarding window in your cruise line app or boarding pass. From there: add 30 minutes at the terminal before your window opens, plus drive or shuttle time to the port. On peak summer Saturdays, add 30–45 minutes for I-45 and Harborside Drive congestion. If staying in Galveston, a 15–minute Lyft or walk to T25/T28 makes the morning stress-free.
2
Before Leaving Hotel or Home
Attach Luggage Tags & Confirm Your Terminal Address
Attach cruise line luggage tags to all checked bags before leaving — your boarding pass or app will include printable tags. Confirm the GPS address for your specific terminal: T25 (2502 Harborside), T28 (2702 Harborside), T10 (1152 Royal Caribbean Way), T16 (1402 Harborside). Give your Lyft driver or GPS the exact address — not “Port of Galveston.”
3
Arriving at the Port
Parking & Luggage Drop-Off
If driving: follow port signs to your terminal’s parking cluster. Express Lot and North Premium Lot (T10) are walk-to-terminal — no shuttle. Economy Lot B and South Lot have free shuttles. If taking Lyft or taxi: go directly to the terminal drop-off zone. Drop checked bags with porters at the kerb before parking. Tip $1–2 per bag. Keep all essentials in your day bag.
4
Inside the Terminal
Security Screening & Check-In
Security at Galveston terminals is similar to airport screening. Terminal 10 (Royal Caribbean) has a particularly smooth process with wide, modern check-in halls. Have your boarding pass (digital or printed) and photo ID ready. Priority lanes for suites, upper loyalty tiers, and accessibility needs. Once checked in, find a seat in the air-conditioned waiting area — in summer you will appreciate this immediately.
5
~11:00 AM Onwards
Board & Head Straight to the Lido Deck
Carnival opens lido lunch from boarding and cabins are typically available by 1:30 PM. Royal Caribbean’s Windjammer opens immediately. Disney offers a welcome lunch. You do not need to wait in your cabin for bags — drop your day bag there and head to food. Muster drill (mandatory safety briefing) takes place before or shortly after departure — check your app for time and station assignment.
4:00–5:00 PM — Get on Deck
Sailaway from Galveston — The Gulf of Mexico Awaits
Be on the open deck as the ship clears the jetties and the Gulf opens up ahead. The Galveston skyline recedes behind you, the water goes from bay blue to Gulf green. Muster drill must be completed before or shortly after departure. The first evening at sea from Galveston — headed for Cozumel, Roatan, or the Bahamas — sets the tone for the whole voyage. Be outside for it.
⚠ Summer Heat at the Terminal — Plan for It
Galveston cruise terminal waiting areas can see outdoor temperatures of 95–100°F with high humidity from June through September. Both Terminal 25 and Terminal 28 have outdoor queuing areas that are exposed to direct sun. The interior waiting areas are air-conditioned, but if you arrive early and doors are not yet open, you may wait outside. Pack sunscreen and water in your day bag, wear a hat, and arrive within your allocated window rather than hours early. Terminal 10 (Royal Caribbean) has a covered entrance and expansive air-conditioned interior — the best summer embarkation experience at the port.

ⓘ Closed-Loop Sailing & Passport Rules
Galveston cruise itineraries to Mexico, Belize, and the Bahamas are “closed-loop” — they begin and end at the same US port. US citizens on closed-loop sailings can technically use a birth certificate plus government-issued photo ID instead of a passport. However, a valid US passport is still strongly recommended for all passengers. Without a passport, a medical emergency requiring air evacuation from a foreign port could leave you stranded without valid international travel documents. The difference in cost and hassle is minor; the risk of travelling without one is not.
★ VTS Embark Day Recommendation

Stay in Galveston the night before. Wake up, have a proper breakfast on the Strand or at your hotel, and walk or take a short Lyft to your terminal at your allocated time. No I-45 traffic anxiety. No Saturday morning Houston commute. Your checked bags are already tagged. Your boarding pass is in your phone. You arrive calm, on time, and ready. On the ship, be on the lido deck the moment you board and get your first view of Galveston Bay from above the waterline. That view — the city behind you, the Gulf ahead — is the beginning of the cruise. Don’t miss it below deck.

The Night Before & Sailing Day Morning
Explore Galveston — More Than Just a Departure Point

Most cruise passengers drive straight to the ship and never spend a night on the island. That is a genuine mistake. Galveston has a character that rewards even a single overnight stay — Victorian architecture surviving a hurricane that killed 8,000 people in 1900, a walkable historic district with some of the best Gulf seafood in Texas, a working waterfront with tall ships and the Elissa, and a beach that is not the Caribbean but is genuinely the Gulf of Mexico at its most accessible. The Strand Historic District is six blocks from Terminal 25 and 28. You can walk from breakfast to boarding.

⏰ One Perfect Day in Galveston — VTS Pre-Cruise Itinerary
8:30 AM
Breakfast on the Strand — Mod Coffee or The Sunflower Bakery on Postoffice Street. Order a kolache (Texas Gulf Coast tradition) and coffee. The Strand at 8:30 AM before the tourists arrive is the real Galveston.
9:30 AM
Texas Seaport Museum & the Elissa — The three-masted barque Elissa (1877) is docked at Pier 21 and is the centrepiece of one of the finest maritime museums in the southern US. You are boarding a ship today — spend an hour with the ship that sailed these waters 150 years before yours.
11:00 AM
Strand Historic District Walk — Victorian cast-iron facades, galleries, chocolatiers, and shops along Strand Street and Mechanic Street. The 1877 Garten Verein (a Victorian pavilion) is two blocks away. Stop at La King’s Old Fashioned Confectionery for saltwater taffy made on-site.
12:30 PM
Lunch at Pier 21 or the Strand — Gaido’s (Gulf seafood institution since 1911), Saltwater Grill, or Olympia Grill on the Pier. Sit outside with a Gulf view. Your ship is visible from some of these seats.
2:00 PM
Bishop’s Palace — If your terminal window allows · 30–60 min walk-through · the most striking Victorian house in Texas · survived the 1900 hurricane · 1402 Broadway Ave J.
Your Slot
Short Lyft to your terminal — T25/T28 is a 5-min drive or 10-min walk from the Strand · T10 is a 5-min Lyft · luggage tags already attached · boarding pass ready · terminal address given to driver.

Seawall Boulevard Walk
Free · Gulf Views · 10-Mile Seawall
The Galveston Seawall was built after the catastrophic 1900 hurricane — a 17-foot concrete barrier protecting the island that is now a 10-mile walkway, bike path, and informal promenade along the Gulf of Mexico. The view from the seawall in the early morning, with the Gulf stretching south and your ship visible in the harbour, is a genuinely memorable pre-cruise moment. Rent a surrey bike or bicycle and cover several miles in an hour.

Galveston Island Beaches
Free · Gulf of Mexico · Stewart Beach & East Beach
Galveston’s beaches are Gulf Coast beaches — brown-ish sand, warm water, and consistent waves from April through October. Stewart Beach (6th St) has lifeguards and family amenities. East Beach is less developed and often quieter. Not the Caribbean, but the same Gulf of Mexico your ship will soon be sailing. A morning beach walk before embarking is something most cruise passengers never do from Galveston and should.

1900 Storm Museum & Galveston History
History · Strand District · Sobering & Excellent
The 1900 Galveston Hurricane was the deadliest natural disaster in US history — over 8,000 people killed, the entire island flattened. The Galveston Historical Foundation’s museum on The Strand tells the story with artefacts, photographs, and survivor accounts. Understanding what this island survived makes the Bishop’s Palace, the Seawall, and the Victorian architecture profoundly more meaningful.

★ VTS Pre-Cruise Galveston Recommendation

Arrive the afternoon before sailing, check into a Strand-area hotel, walk to the seawall before dinner, eat Gulf seafood at Gaido’s or Saltwater Grill, and wake up to a harbour view on embarkation morning. Spend the morning at the Texas Seaport Museum with the Elissa, walk the Strand, have lunch at Olympia Grill watching your ship in the harbour, then Lyft to your terminal. You’ve earned that first drink on the lido deck with the context of what you just spent 24 hours experiencing. Galveston is a genuinely good place when you slow down enough to actually see it.

2026 Events & Season Calendar
Galveston — Key Dates & Season Notes
FEB
🎉
Galveston Mardi Gras 2026
Galveston’s Mardi Gras is the third largest in the United States after New Orleans and Mobile, drawing over 200,000 visitors over two weekends in February. The Strand District is the epicentre — parades, balls, live music, and the Krewe of Aquarius parade. If your sailing falls on a Mardi Gras weekend, hotels and parking book months in advance. I-45 and Harborside Drive traffic is significantly impacted. galvestonmardigras.com for 2026 dates.
Major Event
MAR
🌸
Spring Break — Mid-March
Texas school spring break typically falls in the second or third week of March. Galveston’s beaches, the Pleasure Pier, and all terminals see significantly higher visitor volume. Harborside Drive traffic backs up on Saturday sailing mornings. Hotels and parking lots fill completely. If sailing during spring break, book all logistics months in advance and allow substantial extra travel time to the terminal.
Crowd Impact
MAR–APR
VTS Sweet Spot — March & April
Outside spring break weeks, March and April are our top recommendation for Galveston sailings. Temperatures are warm (65–78°F), humidity is manageable, the island is pleasant to explore, and prices are significantly below summer peaks. Hurricane season doesn’t begin until June 1. This is the window where the pre-cruise Galveston day is genuinely enjoyable rather than just survivable.
Best Value
JUN–NOV
🌩
Hurricane Season — June 1 to November 30
The full hurricane season window. Peak risk is August through October — historically the months with the highest probability of Gulf tropical systems. Cruise lines monitor conditions and will cancel or reroute as needed. Travel insurance with hurricane coverage is mandatory if sailing in this window — your hotel, parking, and travel arrangements are your financial responsibility without it. Monitor NOAA’s National Hurricane Center at nhc.noaa.gov in the 7 days before any summer or autumn sailing.
Critical Warning
JUL–AUG
☀️
Peak Summer Season — Maximum Capacity
July and August bring record passenger volumes, school holiday families, and the highest temperatures (90–92°F with humidity). All port parking and hotels at peak pricing. I-45 and Harborside Drive see the longest embarkation-day congestion. The embarkation experience in July/August is manageable at Terminal 10 (covered entrance, modern A/C) but can be hot and stressful at T25/T28. Arrive in your allocated window — not hours early — to avoid extended outdoor waiting in the heat.
Maximum Impact
OCT–NOV
🍂
Autumn — Cooling Temperatures & Good Value
October brings rapidly improving conditions: temperatures drop to 80°F, humidity falls sharply (lowest of the year in October at 73%), and crowds thin significantly. Hurricane risk eases through October and ends November 30. Good value for Western Caribbean sailings with near-perfect Caribbean weather at the destinations. Galveston’s Dickens on the Strand Victorian Christmas festival runs in early December and draws significant crowds.
Good Value
Common Questions
Galveston Cruise Port — FAQ
Check your cruise booking documents or cruise line app — it will specify your terminal. As a guide for 2026: Carnival uses Terminal 25 (2502 Harborside Drive). Royal Caribbean uses Terminal 10 exclusively (1152 Royal Caribbean Way). Disney uses Terminal 28 (2702 Harborside Drive). MSC Seascape uses Terminal 16 (1402 Harborside Drive). Norwegian Cruise Line primarily uses Terminal 16, with some sailings at Terminal 28. Princess uses Terminal 25. Terminal assignments can change — always confirm from your booking documents before travel.
Port of Galveston has an exclusive rideshare partnership with Lyft. Uber drivers are not permitted in the terminal drop-off and pickup zones at any of the four terminals. Use the Lyft app for all rideshare needs to and from the port. This applies regardless of which terminal you are using. Taxis and pre-booked private transfers are also permitted.
Galveston sailings to Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and the Bahamas are “closed-loop” — they depart and return to the same US port. US citizens on closed-loop sailings can technically board with a birth certificate plus government-issued photo ID. However, a valid US passport is strongly recommended. Without one, a medical emergency requiring air evacuation from a foreign port could leave you without valid international travel documents. Non-US citizens require a valid passport regardless of itinerary.
The correct GPS address for Terminal 10 is 1152 Royal Caribbean Way, Galveston, TX 77554. The old address (1028 Harborside Drive) is outdated and will take you to the wrong location. Many older websites, navigation apps, and even some cruise documents still list the old address. If your GPS shows 1028 Harborside Drive, update it to 1152 Royal Caribbean Way before sailing day.
William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is approximately 42–50 miles from Galveston cruise terminals, taking 45–60 minutes in normal conditions (allow 90 minutes on peak Saturdays). George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is approximately 68–70 miles away, taking 75–90 minutes in normal conditions (allow 2 hours on peak Saturdays). If you have a choice of flights, HOU is significantly more convenient and less expensive for the transfer to the port.
No cruise line technically requires it, but travel insurance with hurricane and weather coverage is effectively mandatory if you are sailing between June 1 and November 30. Galveston is an exposed Gulf Coast port and cruise lines will cancel or reroute sailings when tropical systems threaten. Without insurance, you bear the full cost of hotel, parking, and travel disruption if your cruise is cancelled or delayed. The 1900 Galveston Hurricane, Hurricane Alicia (1983), and Hurricane Ike (2008) are all reminders that the risk is real.
March and April (outside spring break weeks) are the VTS top picks: warm temperatures, lower humidity, no hurricane risk, and prices well below summer peaks. November through February offers the most comfortable weather for embarkation and the island itself, with mild temperatures and low humidity. July and August have the best summer weather at Caribbean destinations but peak Galveston heat, humidity, maximum crowds, and hurricane exposure. October is an excellent value month with rapidly improving conditions.
Terminals 25 and 28 are adjacent to each other on Harborside Drive — Terminal 25 at 2502 and Terminal 28 at 2702. They share the same parking cluster (Express Lot, SMP Garage, Economy Lot B). Terminal 25 is the larger facility (three piers) primarily serving Carnival, with some Princess and occasional Disney sailings. Terminal 28 primarily serves Disney Cruise Line and Norwegian, with occasional Carnival overflow. Both were renovated in 2023. If you are parking in the Express Lot and your ship is at T25, you will walk across to it. If at T28, you walk directly in.
Yes — strongly recommended. Galveston is connected to the mainland by a single highway (I-45) which backs up significantly on Saturday mornings when multiple ships depart. A mechanical failure, traffic incident, or bad weather can turn a routine 45-minute drive into a two-hour ordeal. Staying in Galveston eliminates all highway risk, lets you explore the Strand and the island, and means a 5–15 minute walk or Lyft to your terminal on sailing day. Many Galveston hotels offer park-and-cruise packages that often beat the total cost of port parking separately.
